Carles Busquets to step down from coaching role?

It seems FC Barcelona goalkeeping coach, Carles Busquets, is debating whether or not to continue in his present role at the club next season, with the former Barça goalkeeper is citing personal reasons for his possible departure from the first-team coaching set-up.

Carles Busquets, who is the father of current squad member Sergio, has apparently told those close to him that if he does indeed leave his position as goalkeeping coach this summer, it is not down to any conflict within the club or staff, but rather that he is seeking to distance himself from his son’s career, especially given the great stress and distractions already placed upon the young midfielder.

By all accounts Carles is a well liked and respected member of the coaching staff whose input is valued by the entire team, but in order to allow Sergio the space he needs to grow as a player (and man), it seems Busquets senior is willing to step away from his position at the club, at least for the time being. In fact it seems the former goalkeeper had to truly search his heart before taking on the role last summer, so aware was he of the emotional strain that holding such a position could bring to him and his family. So perhaps it is no surprise then that he is currently considering his options after what has been a very tough and straining season for his son.

If Busquets does end up moving on this summer, it seems Barça may already have an instant replacement in mind, with another former goalkeeper apparently set to step into the role. Juan Carlos Unzue, who played for the club for two seasons and has already acted as goalkeeping coach at Barça under both Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola, could be ready to take the reigns once more. The former Numancia coach is apparently keen on a return to the Catalan capital and would be willing to pick up where he left off when he left the club in June 2010. But it seems Unzue may be spoilt for choice when it comes to which job he takes at Barça, as the former Sevilla and Osasuna keeper has also been mentioned as a possible replacement for current B-team coach Luis Enrique who is set to leave the club very soon.
