Barcelona to bid for Gary Cahill?

According to The Guardian, who failed to name a source, FC Barcelona could be preparing a bid for Bolton centre half Gary Cahill(25). Read more after the jump.

The Guardian is of the opinion that Arsenal FC’s interest in the English defender along with Cesc Fabregas’ endorsement of Cahill’s abilities has caused Barcelona to take interest.Cahill will be out of contract in the summer of 2012 and it seems quite possible that he would leave Bolton for pastures anew in the January transfer window. The figure quoted as Barcelona’s possible bid by the Guardian is 5 million pounds (5.8 million euro).

After signing for Bolton from Aston Villa in 2008, Cahill has made 116 appearances and scored 12 goals and is the mainstay of the Wanderers’ defense. For the England national team, Cahill has made 5 appearances and scored 1 goal.

Here is a short compilation video of Cahill’s abilities:

The Rumour Mill is a comedy series, as anyone who has read it for longer than one day should know. It's a joke, not to be taken seriously. Very funny but not at all reliable, as they nearly daily point out. A joke, get it?

  2. Wizard says:

Well we urgently need real central defender and I watched some bolton games and his defence was amazing,so I say we should buy him, but Also Arsenal, Chelsea,Liverpool and Juventus want him..I hope we can land great central defender is January, otherwise injuries will destrpy us and if I see Sergio one more time as defender I'll kick his ass how bad he is..

  3. El Traductor says:

I don't see an Englishman on Barca anytime soon…

  4. tubular_bells83 says:

there is more chance of Koeman coming out of retirement to play for barca than him joining the team.

happily for most barca fans, gone are the days of panic buys and signings. we leave that to RM.

who could forget the ghosts of bogharde, christanval, kerrision, etc.

  5. ice cream says:

    Botio / Hummels / Sakho

Either one, two or all three of them should be bought next year. Then we'll not only have a defense for years but also a very strong Barca for years all over the field.

  6. Iniestaa says:

Did you recognize how slow Chrgrinski is???

And Barca always push defensive line high, Chiggy simply cannot cope with that.

    • Anonymous_69 says:

I recognized how slow Chiggy was, yes. But that is just the risk of playing a high line defense like us. Puyol (now he is very slow), Marquez, and Milito are very slow, yet they all had their moments with us. Our defenders anticipate and are positional, they make sure the space behind them doesn't get exposed. In that sense, speed isn't needed. VERY rarely, our high line will be completely exposed, and when that does happen, it won't matter if our CBs are slow, the Striker will be through on goal. One of those rare situations was against Milan, where Pato completely exploited our high line. If Pique and Puyol were there, it still would have happened. Simply because that is the risk of our high line, and it will happen sometimes. What's the point of playing a high line if you are preparing only in a way to counteract the risks of the high line? The high defense is used so that the whole team can play forward, and in that case, we need the most technical defenders, not the fastest. What's the point of playing the high line and only using physically gifted defenders? In that case, a deep line would be the best, and in that situation, it doesn't matter if the defender is slow anyways, because there isn't space to exploit.

      • Iniestaa says:

If you think logically, pacy CBs would help us defend counter-attacks better. We can also find fast and technically gifted CBs in Thiago Silva and Mats Hummels. Botia is also a great option, considering that he'd probably fit in much better on and off the field.

        • Anonymous_69 says:

I just said in the above comment, that speed would help, but it is secondary for Barcelona's back line…

Pace would help, of course, but in Barcelona's high line, it is more important to have the best ball players, and THEN worry about pace. Barca don't play a high line expecting it to get exploited against counter attacks often. They get the best positional, smart, ball playing defenders out there, and that stops the counter attacks better than pace could. If you play a high line and use the fastest defenders with bad ball skills, it would be much more vulnerable than if you played a high line and used the best positional defenders with bad speed. In a few rare cases, you get guys like Hummels and Silva, but they are expensive.

  7. Iniestaa says:

I totally agree with you, except for Sakho, I think hes immature.

  8. x_avi says:

we've had only one english player in barcelona ever!!!
    quite unlikely though

  9. boo says:

    epl is overrated.

  10. Caesarean says:

I do want a defender, but… nuh no thanks. I jus want Botia, cheaper, younger, spanish, catalan, la liga approved. Plus he has marshelled mvp pretty well. I dont think we’ve scored more than 2-3 vs gijon (with botia there)

  11. Bluegrana says:

If its true then Barca should get him in December!

  12. david says:

hummels and adil rami are much better

  13. Doppio says:

Super choice, Cahill is one of the best defenders who can be compatible well with Pique

  14. idbarca says:

cahill is good for central defender or tiago silva of ac milan

  15. hamilton says:

he is cool, get him my barca. Visa el Barca!

  16. Actually we need a defender n hope barca will buy him(cahill)

  17. Know-How says:

C*rap news. BTW, Guardiola is closely following Napoli's Cavani (Sport).

  18. hadim says:

Ah, Barca should not Buy Cahill, because they have very good promising players in Team B. For me I Only Need David Luiz Or Thiago Silva At Barca.

  19. Hallu says:

great defender, great price, great piece of business.

  20. ROGER says:

If we want a cb Botia is the right choice for Barca !

  21. swagger. says:

for those of u who are saying hes 'overrated', watch the epl sometime!!!! bolton matches!!!! and then tell me hes 'overrated'. for the price hes for, hes actually underrated. :P

  22. cules says:

He’s a good defender but he’s a waste of money why pay 5 million pounds over someone who isn’t used to the barca way, by the summer of 2012 most of the central defender from barca b (ex:marc bartra) would be perfect for the job

  23. Barca boi says:

    Maxwell out

    Sahko in pace strength cheap

  24. Joseph says:

I don't see why people are saying they don't see an englishmen joining Barca, one of the creators and first president of Barca was an Englishman (Walter Wild). Plus it would be quite arrogant to not buy a quality cheap defender because he was a certain nationality.
