Alves: “Maybe if I had broken my leg people would stop talking”
Last time around in 2009, Dani Alves missed the UEFA Champions League final because of suspension. So the opportunity to play a role in the victory on May 28, clearly has the Brazilian defender excited. The vivacious player is set on bringing the trophy back to Camp Nou and continue the celebrations. In an interview to The Guardian, writer Fernando Duarte talks to Alves about a range of topics including the El Clasico, the coach of Barca’s fiercest rival whose name he refuses to take throughout and the allegations that he dramatised the knock that led to Pepe’s expulsion. Alves, the latest Barca player to take to twitter, also talks about his contract renewal, saying that despite better financial offers from elsewhere leaving a great team would be a mistake. Excerpts from the interview after the jump. The original article can be read here.
“He concedes his style of play necessitates tremendously hard work on the training field and matchday pitch, but that is nothing new in the life of the son of a Brazilian farmer who grew up in the arid and impoverished north-east of the country, helping the family fight the elements to maintain an allotment that produced melons and onions sold at a local market. This was the family’s main source of income until Alves was spotted by a scout for EC Bahia as a 15-year-old in 1998. Four years later he would move to Sevilla, where his versatility resulted in stints as a midfielder and a second striker in a superbly successful six-year spell.”
On his transfer and early days at the club
“Barça paid more money for me than they did to sign Ronaldinho and people were quick to point that out,” Alves says. “That only raised the pressure and the expectations around my performances. Also, as much as everybody knows what Barça is about, it is one thing to watch them, completely another to get used to playing that way. Even for a Brazilian.”
On the incident in El Clasico #3 at Bernabeu
“I was called a teatrero [Spanish slang for play-acting] but what amazed me the most is that people simply forgot the fact that Pepe came all studs up against me,” Alves says. “I know and he knows how hard he hit me. The only reason I don’t have a scar or something worse to show is because I wear carbon fibre shinpads to prevent injuries. If you listen to the audio in the Spanish TV, you can hear the impact of his studs. Maybe if I had broken my leg people would stop talking.”
On his contract
“I was really tempted,” he admits. “There were some offers and I really like the English style. But then look at what I’ve got here at Barcelona. I play with amazing guys, a great coach and our style is admired around the world. It’s priceless.”

One more thing… Last season Dani and Busi used to dive quite often, but never on our opponents half of the pitch, never to win the penalty kick or a dangerous free kick, always to calm down our rivals. Those anti-footballers like Ronaldo or Di Maria dive and they get penalties, free kicks and nobody say a bad word about them! Spanish Football Federation should punish them, they feel they're untouchable, and later they cry and ask "por que?".
Just for the intention that animal Pepe should get a red card.
Enjoy it bud! I graduated last year and it was so surreal the whole time, didn't hit me until a couple days after. Weirdest feeling I ever had!

They never showed this angle on TV and when they started showing it hours after, Alot of people had the Marca/AS edited version of it. It's simple physics man, Alves can't spin around 360 degrees while standing on one foot. Look at the video and you will agree. He needs impact so that he can spin around like he did. I mean for godsakes he almost kicked Marcelo in the face from the impact. when Messi gets hit hard enough he goes down, he is still human. He may stay up when they just try and kick him or push him off balance from behind but he goes down when it's a hard foul. And plus this is ALL studs showing they don't really tackle Messi like that much because the ball is always on his feet so it's never a 50/50 ball. Always 99/1 to Messi
jojo, maybe you should go find a club with a better reputation and support them.
I love Dani, but he needs to know this:
Even if he had broken his leg, people would still be talking. You know the Madrid press would come up with some conspiracy theory, claiming that the cast and crutches were fake, and some of the weak-minded "cules" (I say that with quotes because their status is questionable) would say "I'm ashamed of the way he fell" or "I'm ashamed of the way he yelled out in pain. He's ruined the reputation of our club…"
Let's not forget Marcelo diving in the penalty box then cheering about Dani's yellow card (and cheering Crouch's questionable red card in a previous CL game).
Exactly. I'm not sure how this can even be a debate. NO WAY he could have spun round 360 degrees if there wasn't contact + Alves is absolutely right about the sound of the impact. It was clear to hear.
i really luv dat reply……….tino u dnt need 2 tell us the size of tv u use to watch the tackle, we all have eyes……… like my fellow barca fan said earlier ur tv is infected with uncurable virus
Bullshit you knobjockey… A few players may have let us down but a few of their players and their manager let them down too. Pepes tackle was reckless and high but Alves over reacted. However it was defo a foul and at least a yellow. Barca at least tried to play football unlike Real… Youre obviously not a Barca fan. Youre a tosser so you must be a Real Madrid fan
Every time I read an interview with Dani, whether on the FCB site or elsewhere, I am always impressed by his comments. He's rational and intelligent and wise (despite his image as the team jokester/DJ). I think many of us would have been just devastated to see him go elsewhere. So glad he didn't. Thanks for publishing the excerpts. (BTW– not sure if even Baryshnikov could have made that 360 without contact!)
yeh u probebly impressed with his diving too right?
Haha jojo ur terrible. After watching the game, and seeing the video real madrid posted, i kept looking for other replays. How can Dani fake that kind of momentum off of one leg? I knew I was right, and was proven right by the videos that came out afterwards showing that the video was altered, and contact was made. I also rewatched the pedro "dive" because I was also in disbelief about this, and i honestly believe pedro poked himself in the eye. Being a Barca fan, and knowing pedro, i watched the replay in slow motion, and when he hits the ground, the collision forces his hand up into his face. So if anyone calls pedro a diver, just tell them no, he's just a little clumsy
well actually that video you posted could easily be edited too look like there was contact.come on lets face reality.barcas plan was always to get some1 sent off why do you think pedro and busquest where play acting so much.we did it to inter last season and it worked and we tryed to do it again.i am a barca fan but im not blind and i can see reality ,the fact is barcas reputaion around the world has been damaged by that perfomance.ii will support beautifulll futball but not cheating.
Cause it should be yellow not red. Ref had no guts to show card actually.
Sorry, should be "red not yellow" obviously.
PEP and PEPE. One is gentle the other is a beast
Watched it on HD, NOT some Youtube of Metacafe … so, u know what u see.
Pepe was a RED card, the challenge & INTENTION were not right.
Alves was diving, accept it … no basic physics or else, his other foot was still on the ground.
Barca won La Liga & UCL w/ or w/o him … No one is above the club.
