Match Preview: Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona

Match Preview: Real Madrid CF vs FC Barcelona

Everyone’s thoughts are fixed on the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend where Madrid will host their arch-rival Barcelona. Trailing 3 points to Real Madrid with one more game played, will Barcelona prove that they have the mettle to keep challenging ’til the end and keep Pep’s unbeaten record in the Bernabeu? Can Barcelona emerge from this game unscathed and still perform in Club World Cup and Copa del Rey?

Some people might have told you that when Real Madrid is trailing Barcelona, Real Madrid will never let go until the last matchday. Meanwhile, not the same thing could be said if the position is switched. Trailing by 3 points with one less game in hand after just losing to Getafe, now is the perfect time for Messi and the players to show the world (again) what this team is capable of.

Pep is an excellent motivator and cules have been largely aware of this, with the story of playing the team compilation of Gladiator movie before the 2009 final in Rome, “I want you to score with your heart” to Messi in Club World Cup, and endless inspiring quotes from the gaffer. However, before el Clasico, Pep pulled a masterstroke by letting the senior players watch the young ones play their heart out on Wednesday. By letting the seniors to sit it out and enjoy the show, Pep gave them rest and a reason to demonstrate the hunger just like the juniors. I can imagine Xavi, who will be having his 600th game for Barca, will play with a fire in his belly and so will the other players.

This surge of motivation is much needed to topple Madrid in their current beastly form. Being the only team in La Liga to have a 100% win record in all games played at home (and most probably in all European leagues), Real Madrid have scored 28 goals in six games this season and their playstyle has shifted considerably. Xabi Alonso masterminds a lot of chances, Di Maria is their top assist man, and both Benzema and Higuain have improved by leaps and bounds. Not to mention their almost blitz-like counter-attacking schemes that only take several seconds to go from from winning the ball to the opponent’s penalty box.

Barcelona, on the other hand, suffered from a flurry of muscular injuries, sluggish play away from home, and too many tactical and starting line-up experiments. Barcelona have dropped 11 points already, compared to 14 points in all of last season, scoring just 8 goals and conceding 7. So, just like Dani Alves said, Barcelona doesn’t have any more margins for error. The experiments themselves were much needed and there is always a sacrifice when a team wants to grow out of its shell. Barcelona must always add or change something to their ways of playing as they are always under the spotlight with every other manager trying their best to end Barcelona’s run of success.

With the junior side’s win against BATE this Wednesday and the big wins against Levante and Rayo, it seems slowly but surely the concerns are being put to rest. The players’ intensity are back to what they once used to, and everyone seems to be more aware of their role in the field. Barcelona keeping the width against teams who are content on sitting back very deep have proved to be the solution for a lot of games, accurate crosses have also given Barcelona a goal or two. The remaining problem, lack of height and power in set piece situations, seems to be here to stay. The solution for that is intertwined with maintaining ball possession and making sure to not concede set-pieces in dangerous places.

Team News

FC Barcelona

Barcelona is currently only missing Afellay to injuries as Adriano is back to training and Pedro made his return on Wednesday. Messi is given a full week rest and it will prove to be beneficial for Barcelona, as he’ll be looking to improve his record of scoring seven goals at the Bernabeu already and putting 13 goals past Casillas in 15 games. But how will Pep approach this game? How can Pep react to what Madrid have achieved and still play their own game?

After Karanka confirmed on Friday that Mou will field a 4-3-3 formation tomorrow, a couple of points come into focus. With Mou already realizing that he won’t match Barca in possession, why has he opted for a 4-3-3 formation? How is it better than his usual 4-2-3-1 with Pepe at CDM? It’s very possible that Mou is feeling very confident at this moment. They will play their own direct game and there is a certain predictability that comes with it. Xabi Alonso will be the brain of Real’s attacks, and it will be advisable for Barca to try to stifle it. But with Xabi playing very deep, then how can Barca achieve it with minimal sacrifice to Barca’s own style?

The answer lies with our golden boy who just arrived this season. Cesc Fabregas will have a very important debut tomorrow, as he’ll experience first hand playing el Clasico as a senior team member. The link-up play between Fabregas and Messi plays a very important part in how tomorrow’s clasico game will play out differently than last season. With this said, I still think that Pep will play a four-man defense. So, the little surprise might be the front three. I suspect that Messi-Fabregas-Alexis will play up front. Messi and Fabregas will largely stay in the middle area as Madrid will play a three-man midfield and they have no superiority in the central midfield. Alexis will occupy the right flank with Dani Alves and will sometime switch flanks. It will be an asymmetric formation that sacrifices width on both flanks to achieve a tactical goal. David Villa, Pedro, or Cuenca still have a very important roles as impact subs as there will be more than one phase in the match, and good substitution is key for Guardiola.

As one of the forwards, Fabregas will have one main role when defending, to pressure Xabi Alonso and prevent him from having enough time to think and distribute the ball. Because Madrid will expect to play direct, their other two midfielders will be Khedira and Lass/Coentrao. These other midfielders are nowhere as good in playmaking as Xabi and nullifying him will make sure Barcelona gain some momentum in the midfield battle. Achieving this and Messi-Fabregas partnership in one stroke is not an opportunity to be overlooked easily.

Our three midfielders would be Busquets-Xavi-Iniesta. Busquets will ensure good ball distribution when Xavi is marked closely, and Iniesta will look for openings from the flank or the center. Xavi will control the tempo and will sometimes burst forward or shoot from distance to assure unpredictability.

The four man defense will consist of Puyol-Pique partnership, Dani Alves, and Abidal. Pep has been reserving Pique and Puyol to be fully fit for this match. Dani Alves will partner Alexis Sanchez to provide a deadly link of defense and attack which will pin down Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo. Marcelo has been essential to Real Madrid’s attack for the past seasons, although he is still questionable defensively. By pinning Marcelo down, Guardiola will ensure that these weaknesses are magnified.

Predicted Starting XI: Valdes – Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves, Abidal – Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta – Messi, Fabregas, Sanchez

Real Madrid CF

Playing direct in a 4-3-3 formation, Mou has been very confident with the strengths of his squad. They are very versatile, capable of winning by well-thought moves and set pieces or by counter-attacking against sides that are comfortable with ball possession. I believe this can also be their undoing, as it’s possible that tomorrow they’ll try to play open and attacking football as they are playing at home, rather than a slow tempo match with a lot of stoppage from fouls.

Kaka and Ozil haven’t played too many full matches so far this season due to Madrid’s attacking speed that takes a lot of stamina from the players. Usually their forwards will move very quickly and if this happens it’s very hard to mark the players. That’s why Barcelona tomorrow have to keep an eye on Xabi Alonso, and Fabregas will do a great job acting as the first screen for Barcelona. Abidal will keep Di Maria in his pockets. Too bad Madrid will still be very dangerous in set pieces and there’s no denying that.

Predicted Starting XI: Casillas – Pepe, Ramos, Arbeloa, Marcelo – X. Alonso, Khedira, Coentrao – Ronaldo, Benzema, Di Maria

Match Prediction

Most likely, the match will end up a draw which won’t do Barcelona any favors. Although Messi can be the difference once again here and give the cules something to cheer for and snatch the winner for Barcelona just before the final whistle. Regardless of what will happen tomorrow, seeing the young guns perform so well against BATE and seeing Guardiola take great pride in running this team has given me enough reasons to keep supporting the team ’til the end. Visca Barca.

I was checking Madrid's weather forecast for El Clasico, and they said….fine and sunny during the day!! however there is a chance of Manita thunder during the night. I wonder what they are talking about?

    • Ceska says:

jajaja… Manita thunder! brilliant! Love it :)

    • Koc says:

I have a friend who doesn't like Barcelona for obvious reasons (he is Manchester United fan). Today he said to me that he will be happy to send me a sms when we loose tomorrow.

I want Barcelona to win tomorrow but not because i cant handle his provocations if we loose but because i know we are much much much better team. Even if we accidentally loose i know we are better and time will show that and i am completely sure in that!!!

    • trinibarca.4.life says:

@ rakun…csec cannot start…this club is more important than csec…villa must start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Fred says:

Mourinho attack? If there is one thing that's absolutely certain about him it's that, when the pressure is on, he goes on the defensive. Be same as last year. And I don't think that Pep will play Sanchez on the right. He's scored almost all his goals from the left wing.

  3. smirky says:

i'm puzzled – the article says "Being the only team in La Liga to have a 100% win record in all games played (and most probably in all European leagues)" –

but i thought Levante beat RM – after CR7 said he was good looking, rich, and a great player, and Levante had a banner up that said "we're ugly, poor, and don't play very well" – and won the match.

    am i dreaming?

    • GueRakun says:

100% home record smirky.. :) Fixed!

      • smirky says:

oh, thanks! i thought i had lost some marbles!

thanks for the great preview – i know everyone's pretty keyed up about the match – and over there at totalBarça, you're helping us deal with the tension with all your fine reporting and such.

take care, and, as always, Visca el Barça!

    • tomgee says:

barca did lose to GETAFE…whtas your say to that?

  4. Furher says:

I really think he should start with villa, during these big games, he could be crucial, however if he starts with alexis I think alexis should play at the left where he has proven to be very good during the last games, and also did you guys know that Dr, Dre is actually going to watch the game at the bernabeu, to support barca of course

    • Fred says:

Agree. Don't think Pep will go without his experience and (very importantly) work-rate. He's rested villa for last two games, I think. Is that a sign he's going to start???
I think it's going to be very funny seeing how much attention Xabi gets when he gets even close to the ball. Barca players are going to descend on him from all directions (and they won't have far to run in a 3-4-3.

    • LM10 says:

      Dr. Dre 0_o

  5. Fred says:

Surely, it's got to be a 3-4-3 with Abidal and Alves being a bit more conservative than usual (to protect against DiMaria and Ronaldo). But meanwhile, that will allow the Barca midfield (with Cesc) to sit right on top of Xabi.
In other words, isn't it far more efficient, in terms of man-power, to stop Madrid's game at its source, rather than have to cover two or three upfield options.

  6. jerzdeep says:

Every team has a weakness even the ones who are at their very best who look like they have none. In this case, RM. Their weakness is their right flank. With Carvalho out and Ramos being preferred as a CB, Arbeloa and Lass are the only options. Lass is not an RB so I doubt he will play. Arbeloa however, is the most vulnerable in terms of offence and defence. He is not quick and not as adventurous in terms of a typical fullback. During the games he was used as a RB last season, most of our plays came through his flank most notably in the CDR final where Pedro, Iniesta, and Messi got the best of him. I hope we can exploit their flaws so that we get the much needed chances we can create to score goals.

  7. melissa_fcb says:

no matter how the boys line up tomorrow this el clasico is going to be one of the most important games of the season, barca knows that they have to perform, a draw will be ok, but a win will be ideal in order to have a chance at defending the la liga trophy, i really hope barca wins tomorrow…………..

  8. Mr Topato Head says:

We have only ever lost 2 crucial games under Pep. Against Inter at San Siro, and Madrid in the Copa final. We win every other game. There is always talk about the other team causing an upset, but I always have faith in Barca to win.

I think it will be a typical Mourinho Classico though, our win will be overshadowed by Mourinho's stupid antics and false accusations, and there will probably be a fight and a red card. Won't it be great to see the look on there faces though, when after all the hype we show them another Manita!

  9. Steve says:

I can't see a Xabi/Lass/Coentrao midfield for Madrid. They will have Ozil or Kaka out there, most likely Ozil.

They really can't start Pepe at DM, without Carvalho they don't have enough cover at CB.

I personally think Madrid's lack of a true DM will be their downfall. Xabi is a great passer but he's not a DM, and Kedira or Lass alone will not be able to do the job. I don't see anyone there who is going to break up the midfield passing in the attacking zone, and without good DM cover in front of the CB pair Xavi and Iniesta will have free rein to slice and dice.

They will come off the opening whistle flying, though, and Varca cannot afford to be sloppy. Critical to gain and hold possession early, force them to chase the ball, wear them out, win it back as soon as we lose it, and never give a defender or midfielder space or time to lay down an effective breakout pass. The last point is critical: we have to manage the fast break by cutting it off at the source.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiAuEe53xxs ,,,,, GUYS CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT!! IT GOT ME GOING FOR THE CLASICO :)

  11. Fred says:

Totally agree. Which is why Pep will put Cesc in midfield so that there is someone else standing on Xabi's toes. To compensate for that, all he has to do is make sure that Abidal and Alves (in particular) are more defensive (covering Ronnie and the DiMaria). Then all of this talk about four at the back of three at the back becomes pretty irrelevant.

  12. Andes_Geniesta says:

    We will win….

  14. nia says:

SOOOOOO nervous guys. Reading most of the other sites has got me dizzy and in a panic, Sid Lowe especially with his Madridista bias and power shift going on in Spain. Almost eveyone is backing EE and giving us no hope at all. I didn't watch revista for the past 2 weeks and i've been trying to stay away from press pass and will only watch these shows if we win. Come what may i'm sure i'll get over it and Barca will give it their all. In the team i trust VISCA BARCA!!!:* Is a 3-1 too much to ask for?

  15. DNL says:

Barca is a way of lyf

  16. Cuencalona says:

please, we need something different: PLAY CUENCA AND ALEXIS ALONGSIDE MESSI!

  17. Pepi says:

I totally agree with the line up, except for one part……Messi is better on right wing than left wing, remember? I think that the lineup will what the writer predicted except it will be Messi vs Marcelo, Cesc in the middle(he will have to help out in midfield to shut Xabi and madrids chances down) Alexis will line up vs arbeloa most likely. Arbeloa isn’t really that good, hes not quick like marcelo, or have physical ability like most of their defenders. Alexis will surely make him his bitch. But then again, imagine Alexis vs Marcelo while Messi takes on arbeloa….. It will surely be a great match, hopefully mourinho won’t go with 9 defenders and ronaldo. I’m hoping for a nice open game, the type where our players thrive! Also, mascherano should get a start along pique, considering his form and ability, but puyol brings soo much to the table tOo. Both are amazing, I hope Guardiola makes the right choice as far as formations, starting XI, tactics
    Prediction: Madrid 1-2 Barcelona

To be candid guys, when matches r at stake, barca overperform;they ar surely playin 1 of d games of dier lives..I see total power fast play frm barca infact dis is d moment all dis boys r waiting for..Nail mourhino’s record n proof dat dis is d Dream team of d decade..I see barca win 4-2. if madrd go for4-3-3 cos barca wil nail u if u create space for them to operate we r d best collection sides in dat angle bt if is defensiv tactics I see barca win 2-1.Visca Barca!

  20. hoho says:

It's strange that a lot Real fans are predicting the same scoreline, 3-1 win for them while Barca fans say it is gonna be 2-3, including me. I guess it's gonna be a close game and a high scoring one since Pep is certainly going to play 3-4-3 based on his press conference yesterday. It's either 2-3 or 3-4.

  21. hoho says:

Anyone knows who is the linesman for today? Please send him an email, not to ask him to do us favour, but just to ask him to officiate correctly! My heart keeps telling me that the linesman is going to be absolutely crucial as always with Mou's matches, especially matches of this magnitude. Non-called or wrongly called offsides are just inevitable in his team's matches!

  22. Sydney's Omar says:

As Pep said, to have a chance at winning this we will have to play the perfect game. Any mistake and we’re out

  23. zStray9ALEXIS says:

Line up is good but Alex’(Barca’s Ronaldo) should stay in the left. Him and Iniesta can as well form a strong partnership. While Messi Xavi and Alves can partner at the right. Masc should get a start he is very good at the defence.

  24. manmeet says:

the line up is good but i would like to go with more defensive approach in begning a real madrid would try to exert pressure in first 20 minutes, so i would go with mascherano and busquets in middle and xavi playing just in front of them and i would like to see messi-sanchez-iniesta combination up front, the reason for playing both busquets and mascherano is to control xabi alonso from midfield and if mascherano can control alonso than madrid forward would to forced to play a bit deep to get pass, and of course we can always change our line up in 2 half from defensive to more offensive, i feel its important that we stay in game for first 20 minutes, and mind u busquets is a very good passer, we can always control the midfield and keep possession even if we are bit defensive in 1st half, but not letting madrid create chances in first 20 minutes we can take crowd out of game, which let our players settle

  25. Nico says:

    VISCA EL BARCA! VISCA CATALUNYA!

  26. El Guaje says:

I like your lineup and i think it has one more advantage. Since the 6-2, people where talking about Leo as the "false 9" which is giving the CBs a hard time as they have nobody to mark. With the asymmetric formation you do the same thing to one of their FBs, Arbeloa. And Arbeloa is not someone who can take advantage of the space he would be given. Furthermore, if we need to add width or are too one-sided, Iniesta can go to the left with Fabregas taking his role in the center.

  27. AniBarca says:

Cesc Fabregas to score the winner.

  28. trinibarca.4.life says:

Most likely, the match will end up a draw which won’t do Barcelona any favors. Although Messi can be the difference once again here and give the cules something to cheer for and snatch the winner for Barcelona just before the final whistle. Regardless of what will happen tomorrow, seeing the young guns perform so well against BATE and seeing Guardiola take great pride in running this team has given me enough reasons to keep supporting the team ’til the end. Visca Barca.

NO REAL BARCA FAN NEEDS REASONS TO SUPPORT THE CLUB…..POOR LINE

  29. MessiDaBest says:

Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, pique, Alves, Abi, Villa , everyone. I believe in all of them, they have never let us down, they have always rose to occassion, they are the best. this is their moment to show these dumbF**ks how great we are, And i believe we will rise tonight.
