Match Preview: Athletic Bilbao vs FC Barcelona

Contrary to what stats might have suggested, this upcoming match in the San Mames will be anything but a walk in the park. What are the interesting talking points from the game? What can we expect from the game tomorrow? Find out what we think after the jump.

Barcelona’s away game tomorrow might be one of the most interesting fixtures of La Liga this week. This game promises a lot of interesting points to take from an attacking football point of view. With Bilbao unbeaten in six games, the team is slowly getting better and understands what Bielsa wants from them. Llorente’s expression after winning the Basque derby, drenched in sweat but sighing with relief, can be a perfect summation of this.

Argentine Marcelo Bielsa is one of the innovators in this modern football era, as can be seen with his success at Newell’s Old Boys, Velez Sarsfield or the Argentina national team that won the 2004 Olympics. After taking over Bilbao this season, right off the bat he seeks a solution to change the footballing identity of Athletic Bilbao. He wanted Athletic to play more expansive, yet talked about squeezing the play in a condensed 25-meter area. He held only one 11-a-side practice session in the whole season and it was confusing for his players at first. His unique approaches can of course rub off the wrong way to a lot of different people.

After Athletic Bilbao’s worst start with just two points in five games, Bielsa was facing an immense pressure to quickly get the team sorted out and start winning. But, the public also wanted for Bielsa to change the team’s usual run of play of fullbacks to battering ram striker, long ball after long ball. For a team that has been playing that way for one hundred years, change is a bitter pill to swallow, but if the Bilbao side wants to learn and improve, then Bielsa is the right man to do it.

Marcelo Bielsa was one of the people that Guardiola met when he embarked in a kind of footballing pilgrimage to Argentina before he was asked to coach Barcelona in 2008, with the 1978 World Cup winner Cesar Menotti being the other. Pep and Bielsa talked until late in the night and one of the questions that spread out to the public was, “Do you really want that blood?”, referring to the state of the game if Guardiola was to become a football manager. Guardiola said “Yes” as he was always keen to learn, and he’s very egalitarian in this aspect as he learns from anybody, anywhere, never too proud to improve. Pep even adopted Bielsa’s policy to never give an exclusive interview, only press conferences, as Bielsa thinks that everybody from the media deserves the same attention, regardless of if it is a well-known publication or a more humble one.

Now on to tactics: Bilbao used various strategies such as 4-2-1-3, 3-3-1-3 (just like he used with Chile), and a variant of 4-2-3-1. The key pairing for the recent wins are putting back Javi Martinez  into the midfield and letting Amorebieta or Mikel San Jose partner Ekiza in the defense. Iraola is back playing as right wing back, and Oscar De Marcos (forward) is not playing left back anymore to give way to Jon Aurtenetxe or Koikili. Gurpegi has been playing everywhere on the pitch and it is indeed very confusing to predict a formation that Bielsa will be employing on this match.

However, we can pinpoint key threats for this match. Llorente, playing as their target man, will be the most obvious one. But if they intend to attack on this match, which I think will be Bielsa’s choice tomorrow, then expect Ander Herrera, Iker Muniain, and Markel Susaeta to be playing behind Llorente in a 4-2-3-1 system. Behind the three, Iturraspe and Javi Martinez will round up the midfield. On paper, this seems like the best players that Bielsa can use to cause problems against Barcelona.

The defense will consist of Ekiza and Amorebieta (or Mikel will play instead if Amorebieta is not match fit), Iraola at right wing back, with Auertenetxe on the left back. Amorebieta is a very physical defender and he has faced Messi many times before, he could be the nightmare for Barcelona too.

Barcelona, I highly suspect, will be starting with 3-4-3 as an element of surprise against Bielsa and the 4-2-3-1. The two defensive midfielder formation in 4-2-3-1 will prove difficult to pass through with 4-3-3 and there is no point in playing a central pair in Barcelona defense if Bilbao will only use one striker in Llorente. Moreover, 3-4-3 emphasizes more on possession and Llorente, just like Falcao in the Atletico match, cannot be a threat if Bilbao doesn’t have the ball. So, who will be playing for Barcelona in this match?

Starting from the three man defense, it should be versatile enough to be accommodated to a four man defense later on. Therefore, the three man defense could consist of Alves, Pique, and Abidal. In midfield, Busquets should be playing alongside Fabregas. Xavi, who has been rested might or might not play, it’s anyone’s guess really. The other two players in midfield could be either Thiago, Xavi, Keita or Mascherano but I think it will be Thiago and Xavi. The front three will have Messi, Villa, and Iniesta as it is hard to see Cuenca starting this one since he has played in three successive matches already.

Team News

FC Barcelona

Pedro and Afellay are still injured, but Alexis Sanchez can prove to be a potent substitute for Guardiola, as he was in Plzen. Xavi and Iniesta have been rested for two matches, but I suspect they will be back in the starting line-up for this match. Messi has been scoring hat-tricks in succession, putting 202 goals for Barcelona and everyone’s question will be: “Will he continue this hat trick in San Mames?” Messi himself has humbled away from the question saying it’s very hard to do it against Bilbao, but the sky is the limit for the messiah, so make sure you watch this match.

Predicted Starting Eleven: Valdes – Pique – Alves – Abidal – Busquets – Xavi – Fabregas – Thiago – Iniesta – Messi – Villa

Athletic Bilbao

A lot of injuries struck Bilbao including Gurpegui, Inigo Perez, and Igor Martinez in their injury list. Amorebieta has also been in doubt as he’s being left out in the Europa League game against Salzburg as a precaution. Llorente is hitting the net or causing a headache for the opposition in the last three matches in La Liga, so be wary of this battering ram from Bilbao.

Predicted Starting Eleven: Iraizoz – Ekiza – Amorebieta – Iraola – Auertenetxe – Javi Martinez – Iturraspe – Muniain – Herrera – Susaeta – Llorente

Match Prediction

The match will be very intense as both teams will seek possession and the battle of wit continues between the former student and mentor. These two managers are relying on possession as their main method of defense, so both teams will press high on the pitch and try to condense the opponent into a small playing area. Expect changes of tactics and approach many times during the match as it unfolds. Prepare for surprises from both teams and to be entertained.

Athletic Bilbao are Abidal's favorite team!!! that is the only team he has ever scored against in a Blaugrana colors, probably that is the reason why he is featured in the picture.

    • Vir_IndianCule says:

yeah i remeber Abi scored against them in a Copa match last season. It was a tie-winning goal at San Mames…..so i hope he scores this time as well….:D

and his celebration on goal was cooooll….

    I think you mean San Mames… :P

  3. Da Real Deal says:

    @ Rakum
do you seriously think pep would go with Busquets as a CB ahead of Puyol and Maschareno? and no holding midfielder in an away match?
Surely either Puyol, Maschareno or Keita will start!! surley.
Rakum…if you get this starting line up correct…. i will call you genius for as long as i post here!

    • GueRakun says:

As I wrote in the post, it will be a 3-4-3, and Busquets will be playing as holding midfielder but we'll play three defenders. When we need a back four, then Busquets will shift back with Thiago as the holding midfielder. Not the best player in CB, but substitutions can be made if Pep want to revert to 4 at the back. :D

      • Da Real Deal says:

Alves strenght is going forward and this 3-4-3 formation dosen't suit him since there is a right winger ahead of him. I get the feeling pep dosen't like to play 3-4-3 away from home, but then again i got every line up wrong this season, so you might be right.

  4. harsh not the admin says:

    1. wasnt alves suspended?

    2. We WILL NOT, and as in N-O-T, concede a goal. It will be 3-0. Mark my words.

    3. Iniesta should start.

    4. Now i think alves isnt suspended. confused.

    5. Dont worry guys. Cut the fear out. We are the best team in the world, not bilbao!

  5. michael says:

i want alexis to start end of story hehe

  6. Ivich says:

I think winning away games like this will be key to us retianing the title. Madrid has already played six and lost just one – Levante. While we have played only four and drawn two of them. It is obvious, we need to start winning away games if we are to win our fourth successive liga.

    • Pepi says:

Agree with you all the way, I remember alves saying something like this last season. We need a very strong win tomorrow and this game is always very difficult.

  7. Steve says:

I'd guess a more conservative 4-3-3 for a tough away game. lves and Abidal at fullback. Pique and Mascherano at CB… hard not to say Puyol but he doesn't seem fully back to his usual standard, Masch has been great lately, and Pique's height is needed to manage Llorente. Midfield… I feel like Xavi and Iniesta have been rested for this reason, putting the old faithful Busquets-Xavi-Iniesta combination on the field. Messi and Villa for sure, whether Cuenca or Sancvhez would depend on Pep's perception of Sanchez's fitness. I could see starting Cuenca and holding Sanchez as a potential impact substitution.

In that format we'd have Puyol to bring in if we're defending a lead, or if we need to break a draw or (hopefully not) come from behind there'd be Fabregas to come in.

  8. barceloniesta says:

last season we only manage 0-0 and 1-1 at copa del rey. Hopefully, it not repeat.

  9. Evans says:

if it’s 3:4:3 formation,i think alves shud nt overlap,he should remain in d defence. i will like to see iniesta and xavi in this game.in the attack messi , sanchez and villa. i predict 5 : 0,in favour of barca.

  10. Inder says:

I can't help but disagree with the formation. With the 4-2-3-1 that Bielsa might use, there is enough width to trouble Barca. So the 3-4-3 will only make it worse and although I don't doubt our players to be able to keep possession , I still think Pep will start with the 4-3-3 to counter players like Muniain. Something that can be changed at almost any point in the game to a 3-4-3.
I have to agree this will be a truly brilliant match, arguably better than a Clasico cause unlike Mourinho with his extremely boring defensive play(not so much this season), Bielsa, like you said, plays attacking football. That and both coaches being tactical genius' it will be really a great match to watch and probably the toughest in La Liga fo Barca.
I should think that Alexis will start on the bench cause I'm pretty sure he isn't ready to play full 90 minutes. Still hope to see Iniesta alongside Xavi so that could possibly mean Cesc up front? Not sure about who will play forward though. Nonetheles, should be a great game:) Visca el Barca:)

    • dopeboy says:

exactly my thoughts. the 3-4-3 makes us very vulnerable in the wings and as everybody knows, you dont want bilbao to fire crosses as they have players who are very good in the air. 3-4-3 would be madness against bilbao.

      • Inder says:

yup….damn llorente is extremely dangerous…also a reason why i think puyol and pique will start in CB cause they are the best in the air

  11. tubular_bells83 says:

Tough fixture but the fact that they are coached by Bielsa means that they will try and play football. Also they had an away game on last Thursday in which they played a strong line up.

I think these 2 coupled with our strong defensive record will mean we will come through. I think Pep will play with a 4/3/3 with Mascherano in defense and a midfield of Xavi Busquets and Iniesta, with Fabregas playing with Messi and Villa.
    2-0 barca.

"Barcelona, I highly suspect, will be starting with 3-4-3 as an element of surprise against Bielsa and the 4-2-3-1. Moreover, 3-4-3 emphasizes more on possession and Llorente, just like Falcao in the Atletico match, cannot be a threat if Bilbao doesn’t have the ball. So, who will be playing for Barcelona in this match?"

We all appreciate the hard work that goes into writing a preview, and it was well done, but this whole paragraph doesn't make sense. I will never pretend to be tactical master, but from what I know, the 4-2-3-1 was created in the first place in order to dominate the 3-4-3. That's the main reason the 3-4-3 went out of fasion. 3 man defenses are still used, but the 3-4-3 is very rare.

  13. Anonymous_69 says:

"The two defensive midfielder formation in 4-2-3-1 will prove difficult to pass through with 4-3-3" and here, the misconception that the 3-4-3 is more offensive than our regular 4-3-3. Having ONE extra midfielder doesn't make it more offensive, especially when you're taking out TWO attacking fullbacks, which is what we often play with.

"There is no point in playing a central pair in Barcelona defense if Bilbao will only use one striker in Llorente." What does this mean? If basic tactics have taught me one thing, is that it is absolutely necessary to have one more defender than the strikers the other team is attacking with. No more, no less. The "spare man." So, when faced with one striker, you play a 4 man defense and use two attacking fullbacks, leaving the two CBs alone with the Striker. That's what Bielsa himself does when playing against a one striker formation.

  14. Anonymous_69 says:

"3-4-3 emphasizes more on possession and Llorente, just like Falcao in the Atletico match, cannot be a threat if Bilbao doesn’t have the ball." Again, more midfielders doesn't automatically mean more possession. Especially when you play 4 midfielders in similar positions, constrict more space, become more predictable by taking away the little width we get with Alves, and using a formation which actually tires us out more.

I'm not a fan of the 3-4-3 in general, but I don't mind it sometimes. Hoever, it is not meant to be played against 4-2-3-1. It worked against Atletico and other teams this season because of this amazing team's quality, and because Cesc particularly thrives in it, not because it gives us tactical advantages.

    • Anonymous_69 says:

I would like to play Puyol-Pique together and play Mascherano in the midfield along with Busquets and Xavi. However, neither of those two defenders are at their best, and Mascherano is simply too beastly in CB at the moment, so I think Xavi-Busquets-Keita will be the midfield, with Iniesta-Villa-Messi being the attack. And no, that isn't a defensive approach per se. Pep once played that midfield against Athletic Bilbao, and Keita's position ended up being the key that allowed us to win easily. Since then, all our games against them have been tighter, despite us playing Iniesta in midfield and someone else in attack.

In that other game against Bilbao, Pep played, Keita as the furthest forward midfielder. He played Busquets as DM, and Xavi deeper. The point of that was so that Keita so crash into the box. It was probably our best utilization of Keita's aerial threat ever. Xavi deeper constantly got the ball in space and launched perfect balls into Keita's path, and he wreaked all kinds of havoc.

    • GueRakun says:

Thank you for the amazing feedbacks. I have much to learn still too, but what I wanted to convey in that paragraph is these things:
      1. Pep will, with no doubt, put a surprise in his formation or approach. Everyone will think it's the 4-3-3, and that's why Bielsa will try to play the 4-2-3-1 as he can try to dominate Alves in wingback and pin him down, and also with the extra man for them they'll press us higher.
      2. Yes, 3-4-3 is very nice for Fabregas and this could maybe turn out to be one of the key match for him this season. Last season with Caparros we could only scrape draws, but that was because they're playing very deep. I'm also opposed to playing Keita when we need to emphasize possession as he lost a lot of balls and his passing went astray too many times in the match against Plzen. Basically, we don't really need that much physicality in midfield that much anymore.

      • Anonymous_69 says:

Bielsa can TRY to pin Alves down with his 4-2-3-1, but he might not be able to do it :) . With the 3-4-3, we completely take Alves out of the equation for him

Cesc works well in a 3-4-3, but so does Keita. In fact, Keita has probably been our most important player during games we have played the 3-4-3. Against Villareal for example, there's no way we wouldn't have conceded a goal if it wasn't for Keita. Against Plzen, he misplaces less passes than Fabregas I think… He is a better passer than people give him credit for, and he is definitely more than just a physical presense. Against Athletic, we need someone who can give us an aerial threat. There is a reason why our easiest game against Athletic in the last years has been when Keita has played further up and ran into the box.

Also, some Cules have this strange dream of playing purely technical midfielders, and forgetting about the rest. Well, sadly, this would never work in reality. You need the Keita's, the Puyol's. You need versatility. The best team is the one with skills, speed, strength, and a smart mentality. Not just skills.

      • Anonymous_69 says:

Think of it this way: with the 3-4-3, we were simply outnumbered against Valencia. That's how they scored BOTH their goals. They went out wide, Alves tracked. Puyol went to double mark, which is what is supposed to happen, and what he always does in a 4-3-3. They put in a simple cross. Now it is up to Abidal and Busquets to mark Soldado, their right winger, and sometimes a midfield runner. That was against Valencia, a team that isn't particularly known for it's crossing threat. Athletic is exactly known for it's threat in the box. It will be worse against them. And our extra midfielder would be worthless. Bielsa would immediately spot the 3-4-3, and simply drop his midfielders to play 4-5-1. Then our three man defense becomes even more worthless, because we have two spare men for just one Striker. I'm sorry, but a 3-4-3 can only work here if all our players have their best games of the season. We can't rely on that. Our standard lineup is needed here, and I am pretty sure Pep thinks so too. He rested Alves for the second half against Plzen, which means he will probably start today.

        • GueRakun says:

Bingo, the 3-4-3 might be a trap for bielsa to convert his midfield a little bit back and play the counter and then Pep will switch with 4-3-3, as Busquets can hold back for a while when Thiago plays the anchor. Alves can then roam forward freely and Pep's plan might work on . Besides what Athletic used to do under Caparros and Bielsa are way different. That's why using Caparros' games as analysis holds little value imo.

Valencia in a sense already suited their gameplay for our 3-4-3 at that time, but now when 3-4-3 is at least expected then Pep will pull this out. Against Plzen, Keita was very bad when passing the ball. I don't have the statistics with me, but I believe UEFA will have the stat. Keita's tendency to choose the passing lane very predictably is very dangerous also.

Nice article, it'd have more bite if you had used the full quote where Pep said 'I need that blood'

  16. Mike says:

also got my doubts about the 3-4-3 against teams that press high. Fewer options to beat the press.

  17. hossam says:

    Xavi
    Fabregas

    Sanchez
    Messi
    Villa

  19. DoRy says:

I really don't think Barca will go with 3-4-3. Athletic is a team with a lot of attacking power, and 3-4-3 will leave our wings too open for them, so they'll get crosses to Llorente.
4-3-3 is better, I hope Pep learned something from the 1st half against Valencia.

this game is a potential banana skin, the condition, the damp pitch, i just hope we pick up 3 points. all teams seems to bend over for madrid or this league is becoming a joke- seriosuly teams like osasuna are a disgrace.

  23. melissa_fcb says:

barca will come out as always and play the football that they know how to play……..they enjoy what they do…………..it's hard to predict their lineups as guardiola is constantly introducing the element of surprise……..his rotations and variations have teams guessing what is his game plan……….football is dynamic we know this but guardiola well he is genius……………barca always

  24. jaspa j says:

So sad just saw the la liga goal chart, three madrid players and one BARCELONA player on the chat. Please messi stop being selfish. We need our players to start scoring

  25. jerzdeep03 says:

What does that have to do with Messi being selfish? Blame Villa or Pedro for missing sitters or their lack of form. Blame the injuries of our forwards which led us to start a B team player for 3 consecutive games. Don't blame Messi. He is a goalscorer and its not his fault that he is already bagging hatricks like the plague.

Anyways, who cares about the goal chart? As long as we are winning and playing well with Messi at his absolute best, we shouldn't worry.
