Villa: “I thought the train had passed me by”
This is a translation of an interview David Villa gave to ‘El Periodico’. The original can be found here.
In six months David Villa has pulverized Ibrahimovic stats goals-wise (17 in the League, 21 in all competitions), and it’s all thanks his seamless integration into the Barcelona team. On a streak with 4 goals in his last 4 games, the striker will make his first visit to the Mestalla since his move this summer.
Did you ever imagine that you can adapt yourself to the Barca system so soon?
I am very pleased with how things are going. It is more or less what I imagined it would be, all those things that people told to me before my move. Of course, I already have a lot of friends at the club and had often talked about what Barca is like with them before. But being a very special season [debut year], it is even better than the previous two, goals-wise, and those were impressive [seasons].
An awkward visit awaits and are you excited about it?
Yes, I’m happy to be returning to the stadium where I lived through so many happy moments and where I still have many friends. It will be a special feeling, as in Gijon.
What kind of feelings?
It is of joy, but in a weird way. You’re facing teams that you root for every Sunday, but when you yourself go there, you’d want to win against them. You feel you are a part of them [that is] until the 90 minutes begin.
What kind of reception are you expecting? Will you celebrate a goal?
I don’t know. I left in a good way, and I have fond memories of the people in Valencia. If I do score, as has happened in Gijon, I’ll try not to express my joy out of respect to the many people who have helped me be who I am today.
Thirty thousand people welcomed you at the Camp Nou.
Even though I’m accustomed to playing in front of so many people, when I stepped into the stadium, I was impressed. I could feel their affection even before I put on my jersey. When my signing fell through last summer, many Barca fans came up to me to say they felt bad that I could not make my move, and that warms my heart.
Have it ever crossed your mind then that you might have missed the train?
If fate has it that I would not be here in 2009 but this summer, then it would not have been for nothing. I never give a thought about what would happened had it turned out differently as I’m very proud of my career, and it would not have changed anything.
Did you think Barca might have given up on getting you then?
I was almost convinced they were. When you think about it Barca had just made a very big signing with Ibrahimovic, a player who plays in my position, and the amount asked is not that small… I thought the train had passed me by. But I also believed that if I give another good season playing for Valencia, not only Barca but also other teams would be interested in me.
You came to the best Barca team ever witnessed.
When I was with the national team [for the WC2010], after donning my jersey, I imagined myself playing for Barca. It was a little strange. I signed in May but did not get to play until August.
It is a team where the most important thing is precisely its mental aspect. Here the ball is not passed, it flies.
Yes, that’s true. It is a very complicated playing style. But I’m complementing the two main characteristics: the desire to adapt what is good with my style and that of the team. We must not forget that this group of players are accustomed to a style that is played to the perfection, and with players that are adapted to execute it. In midfield, in defense, between the goalposts and those that play upfront, they all work together well, with great mobility, and without a true center-forward.
A system to which you yourself has adapted very well into.
It was hard but with determination and conditioning, it became easy. Barca believed that my playing style fits theirs, and that is the reason why they made such a huge investment in getting me.
Is this what Begiristain told you?
Both Txiki and Raul (Sanllehi), and Laporta himself told me he was relieved. Why? For everything that went on the year before. They were relieved to be able to secure my signing, but I was also relieved.
Guardiola also breathed a sigh of relief.
Now it’s easy to say that Guardiola does everything well. But one must not forget his early beginnings in games against Numancia or Racing, betting on players such as Pedro or Busquets, who are now house-hold names around the world. With him as a coach, this club knows what he wants. But it is not so easy because this system carries with it a lot of risks. Any team can play this way, but nobody does it well enough. Always wanting to hold on to the ball, using it both to attack and defend, has its risk.
What has surprised you the most?
It’s the small details. I have lunch here, dine here, at the Ciutat Esportiva, live football every second, enjoying my time, being with my teammates, but then I’m also able to spend time with my family. That thing about travelling on the same day as the match is good.
Now you’re enjoying Barca but in the past you are suffering from it.
Well yes, there’s no better word to describe it. Before I suffered and now I enjoy it. When I was playing against them, I knew I had to chase the ball around a lot. And even by running a lot we were losing 6-0, 4-0 and 3-0 on my last visits. Now I see that look of frustration on the faces of our rivals. When you play against Barca, it is not a normal week. You prepare a lot of stuffs, then the match comes, you do all those things more or less well, and you still lose. I knew what it feels like to play against Barca.
Your rivals never give in…
This is why this team, that is able to win 16 consecutive matches, and the points that come with it, has in it a lot of merit.
Have you been reinvented as a player?
I don’t know but I’m proud to be able to play in another position that I’m not used to. I like it a lot. Now I’m playing in a different way and yet my performance has not gone down, in personal terms and statistically. I feel good, playing well, the coach trusts me, and my number of goals is equal to that of other years.
So what change?
When defending. In attack, we have enormous freedom to move anywhere, but in the defense, there is a minimum standard that all of us must conform to.
But Barca does not do much running…
It seems so from outside. If we have Leo, the best in the world, running back to recover a ball, it says everything. But it’s not, it is in the way we support each other. The day we stop running is the day when we will be weaker because of the high standard that we have set ourselves. But will that day come? Definitely not.
Furthermore, your connection with Messi has been immediate.
Even before coming here I have already said he was the best in the world. Now, even more so. And he is obsessed with improving himself every day. He is always looking ahead. This makes him an even better player. Never have I seen anybody like Leo: the control, the speed, the shot, the dribble… Often others will try to kick him, and they could not even touch him.

Great signing by Laporta and Beguiristain!
thanks for translation, great interview, I'm glad to see how David adapted in Barca, he gives us so many wonderful moments:)
Laporta and Begiristain made a steal when they signed him before the world cup. he would have been 50% costlier if he was bought after the cup!

Thanks Buj for this. Really enjoyed reading the interview. Shows how humble Villa is and how glad he is to have joined Barca.
All I remember is the home games against Valencia last season. As Valencia came out onto the pitch, all of our fans erupted into a chant of "Villa! Villa!"
I knew he would be in Barca the next summer
keep up the good work totalbarca. Doing a great job translating all the spanish press articles about barca.
A player who is really worth his money. He fits really perfectly and is working very hard in contrast to lazy Ibra. As well he is always chasing for a goal – a real hunter. He is not the man that gets the votes for being the man of the match but that's not why we bought him. May he serve us for many years because he was the missing part of our killing trident MVP!
VISCA BARCA!
Brilliant singing, i couldnt think of a better suited striker for barcelona that hasnt come through the youth system, its incredible the way he has adapted and still gets his goals and assists
That's what is so great about Villa, not only does he say modest things, he apparently doesn't even realize what a star he is in his own right.
We're very glad you're playing for Barcelona too, Villa!
love this interview, the pic is amazing, villa's words/thoughts/humility. its perfect. thanks v much for posting, tB/buj. good job as always
And Andy Carroll is apparently worth more than him. The world has officially gone fuckin' mad.
OT: Van Persie definitely out for Barcelona match (at least 3 weeks from now)
Walcott also out (expectations – 2 more weeks)
Fabregas possible. (i think he will be ready for his huge moment at the Camp Nou)
Alex Song and Laurent Koscielny have some troubles too, but both should be ready for next week.
Im pretty sure we can make it also against the complete Arsenal but honestly Walcott and RvP are players which i consider one of the most dangerous for our defence.
I was so happy when i heard Villa coming to Barca!.. But just when i read the swedish newspaper's on the morning about Villa would soon be official, the EXACT same night the headline's changed to "Laporta is in Milano to talk about ibra"
I couldn't believe it.. i barley slept, i was devastated and enormous disappointed.. then he signed and i just couldn't believe it.
A Year later, May 19th I woke up and read TotalBarca as i always do when i get uo. I saw the massiv headlines: Official: Villa Signed! I couldn't believe it, i shed a tear.. I just wanted to scream, but i opened my mouth and nothing came out, i felt like i was screaming inside my body… That Signing was the best Birthdaypresent i could ever ask for!.. Love may 19th 2010!
(sorry for my english) :$
Great interview… I didnt want to bring up Ibra but I couldnt help noticing how Villa's attitude is 1,000 times that of Ibra's. Villa talks about adapting his own style for the team, Ibra talks about the team and Pep adapting to him! I cant get over how foolish and ignorant Ibra can be with his great skills. Villa shows he has the better football brain. Ibra would call him a "philosopher". haha
Well Villa we love you too. I spend weeks defending the selling of Ibra and the acquisition of Villa to my friends, now all i do week in and week out is seat back do that Denzel Washington thing with my eyes, a little LL Cool J lip lick and in the voice of the great Tony Montana , i say," say hallo to my little friend! "
Of course my friends hate it but that makes it even more sweeter hahahaha.
Nasri is a far greater threat than Walcott. He scored a lucky goal last year, which both Maxwell and Valdes should have done better with, and since then he has been put on a pedestal. Nasri and an in form RvP have made Arsenal look exceptional at times this season. Walcott did well the first few league games and then fell off.
It was always obvious that Villa will adapt easily but with Ibra it was totally different, I was always worried about him, he was invisible almost every game even if he scores, he was really a problem for the club's style of play.
Signing Villa was great decision by the board.
i love this, "When you play against Barca, it is not a normal week. You prepare a lot of stuffs, then the match comes, you do all those things more or less well, and you still lose. I knew what it feels like to play against Barca."
If Andy Caroll is valued at 35 mil then i would be valued at half a mil!.. and mind you i aint no wonder boy
a hard worker's train never passes . and you my friend are one of the , if not the hardest working forward in the world right now .
players like Anelka moved from big club to big club and never appreciated what he had until it was too late and he was past his best .
you waited for your chance , and now you got it . seiz the moment cuz you're in your prime . but your best is yet to come .
I love you Villa !!!
After all the Etoo and Ibra crap Villa has been a godsend. I hope he out does them all.
I think Milito would be more dangerous than RVP.
OMG, when i read the title i was so worried. But i realised it wasnt literal and i was relieved lol
Awesome interview guys. I am so glad to see him doing so great. I really believed in the guy from the start and knew he would be a fantastic addition for us. I can only imagine what he must have felt like when ibra got signed, after all, who could have imagined back then that ibra would monumentally fail and would be gone so quickly. At that moment, Villa probably really thought that his "train has passed".
"Never have I seen anybody like Leo: the control, the speed, the shot, the dribble… Often others will try to kick him, and they could not even touch him."
LOL
I liked him since he was in Zaragoza. I usually don't get excited over a signing, as I tend to believe the best players are in our team and not in others, but he was one of the few I always wanted to see wearing our shirt.
For those who say Messi don't get kicked!! I always think Messi would be kicked a lot if he weren't so quick and good with the ball…rivals can't catch him, not even to kick him (hope this is true tomorrow!)

Good that Ibrahimovic went and very good/Best that Laporta went. Swaping Samuel Eto plus paying another 40m for this SH@t Ibra was not worth. I had the same experience as that of Shy ronnie(one who commented above) when Laports signed Ibra and not Villa, There was nothing right with Ibrahimovic coz he really is just made to play Italian football and never had he ever scored when its worth the most. I still remember how he missed 3 chances in the opening mins last season against arsenal at Emirates even my Granny could have scored and when u compare him with Villa u could found 10x better performances, nature and aggression. I still remember that villa just got 2 chance against madrid and he scored 2 on 2 against madrid(whats the score 5-0) whereas Ibra scores 2 when he gets 20 chance. Good he went and Mr. Laports great that u went coz now We won’t be in debt when u sign such stupid player and also Swapped Eto for the same. I feel sad for Eto
-Villa talks about adapting his own style for the team, Ibra talks about the team and Pep adapting to him!-
EXACTLY! +1
Pulverized?…Uhh, didn't Ibra score 20 goals for us?
same here too. i celebrate my birthday on may 20 and wen the i read about the signing the day b4 i said to myself "what more can i ask 4 than this. thank GOD". he is the perfect replacement 4 our beloved Eto'o,
great interview
Good that Zlatan Ibra went and great that Laporta went too. The sad part was Villa delayed in the signing by a year and also the swap of Samuel Eto for stupid striker like zlatan Ibrahimovic. I still remember Villa just got 2 chance against madrid and he scored 2 on 2…whereas Zlatan needs 20 chance to score 2, I still remember he missed 4 clear chances against arsenal last season in UCL, Even my grand mom could have scored.
Offtopic:
I was looking through random Villa videos and I found this one….lol

Valencia game will be tough Villa.
Even after the departure of Villa and Silva they have managed to put together a good team.
Well done Valencia.
Yup yes he did. Villa too…..and its only March.
hahaha.. that was funny!
Thank you Barca for signing the best center forward in the world
We should be happy that we got him pretty cheap (~40€) because I know that he is more worth than Ibra!
The game agianst Valencia will be tough and I hope Villa can make it for the game!!
Visca barca
Villa is truely a nice humble guy and i'm happy he's fitting in well. What makes him so humble is that he knew that he was already coming to a star studded team and he was told he has to play around Messi and the fact that he was willing to give up being the star of Valencia speaks volumes. He also had an interview on Revista de la liga(british football show) where they spoke about how he used to refuse taking ice baths at Valencia but now does so at Barca coz he sees Puyol, Xavi, Messi being the first pple to jump in with no complaints. He also said that coming to Barca was a humbling experience which made him a better player. I for one am glad that he came too.
seriously guys, i don't know if it's just me (probably), but this sentence simply doesn't make any sense:
"But I’m complementing the two main characteristics: the desire to adapt my style that is good and that of the team. We must not forget that this group of players are accustomed to a style that is played to the perfection, and with players that are adapted to execute it."
that is sick
"But I’m complementing the two main characteristics: the desire to adapt what works well with my style and that of the team. We must not forget that this group of players are accustomed to a style that is played to the perfection, and with players that are adapted to execute it."
I hope this is a bit clear.
