Ex-Barça player Henrik Larsson’s career in his own words

Ex-Barça player Henrik Larsson’s career in his own words

Henrik Larsson ended his career as a football player in 2009 at the age of 38. During his 17 years as a professional player, he had become a legend in Scotland and Sweden and a hero in Barcelona and Manchester. In July 2010, Henrik spent 90 minutes talking during the Swedish radio show “SommarPratarna” (Summer speakers) about his career and life. After the jump you can find a video with the best parts translated.

Henrik played for Barça from 2004-2006, he scored 13 goals for the club and was the player behind both of the goals Barça scored in the 2006 Champions League final.

Note: ‘Summer speakers’ is a Swedish radio show which is broadcast every summer on Swedish radio, where different celebrities talk for 90 minutes about whatever they want. The series is a well regarded program among Swedes.

During the program, some of Henrik’s most compelling and personal statements concerned his younger brother, whom he spoke a lot about in the 90 minutes. Henrik’s brother, Robert, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs, was found dead in his apartment in 2009. Henrik, as the older brother, and their parents tried their best to help him, but it was impossible. When it comes to his younger brother’s addiction, Henrik felt powerless. He tried to help in different ways but came to the conclusion that there were simply nothing he could do.

I’ve always had the power over my life and my career, been good at knowing whom I can trust and who only acts for their own best interest. But when it comes to my little brother’s addiction, I was powerless. He was powerless during his addiction. We were all victims of his drugs. It was horrible not to be able to help. When in the end the only right thing was to hold him away from me and be firm, I really just wanted to take him home and let him have everything. In the beginning I helped him to pay off his debt, every time was the last time. He promised, now it will get better. But it didn’t help, the debts grew and I understood I only made his situation worse. I had my own family and I came to a point where I didn’t want to be involved anymore. He was always welcomed home to us when he was sober. He knew that rule couldn’t change. So we rarely saw each other. He was a fantastic guy and dad. But the last years he lived alone when even his own family distanced themselves from him. I lived abroad so I never ran into him on the town. But the worry was always there, that bloody worry that ate me from the inside. What is happening, where is he?”

Henrik also said that he would have given his brother everything he wanted, all his money, if it would have guaranteed that he would have a life without drugs. But it was an impossibility. Henrik was sure they would solve the problem when he came home, but the reality became a nightmare, as he describes.

My big brother, mom and dad saw him on the town sometimes, it must have been horrible for parents to see their child go under. They always tried to help him. They gave him food and somewhere to sleep. It didn’t matter how he was feeling. Mom and dad aged fast because of all the worrying and grief. We couldn’t do anything, he knew we were there if he wanted to get better. Even if he was worn and tired I didn’t give him anything. He would have got all my money if it would guarantee a life without drugs. But drug addicts can promise nothing. They have only one thing that draws, there is no trust. He got clothes and furniture, but when he sold them I stopped with that too. He tried to play on my bad conscience, make me feel guilty, but I resisted. He begged and begged to just give him some more. I who had so much, he who had hell. I thought we would solve the problem when I came home. I thought about him every day during all those years around the world. Everything came closer when I got home, the reality became a nightmare, I couldn’t help him. My imaginary super powers did not bite on his demons.”

There was simply nothing Henrik could do to help his brother, still he felt the guilt.

Even if I couldn’t do anything differently, I still feel guilt. No one else in our family could have done anything so he would be free from his drugs. It was his demons that he fought against, I would have liked to be with him and fight at his side, who were they and what did they do to you that hurt you so much?”

His brother changed his name and cut off his dreadlocks, but still Henrik knew he was proud of his older brother’s success. Despite this, his little brother’s addiction and death will always be, for Henrik, his biggest failure.

I know he was proud of my success. He came to see my last game for Celtic against Sevilla. He was supposed to come to the UEFA Cup Final in 2003 where I scored two goals and we still lost. I had arranged for tickets, hotel and a rental car, but he never showed up. But it wasn’t easy to be Henrik Larsson’s brother in those areas in Helsingborg. He cut off his dreadlocks and changed his name for some reason. But we still looked alike. Everyone knew that we belonged together. It’s the powerlessness that breaks. I have come to the conclusion that it was a bottomless, boundless, black failure for me.”

  1. samarth-culé says:

In Larsson's final game for Barcelona, he won his first UEFA Champions League medal. Larsson came on as a substitute and assisted both of Barcelona's goals in a 2–1 win over Arsenal. Thierry Henry paid tribute to Larsson's contribution to Barcelona's win after the game, saying, "People always talk about Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Giuly and everything, but I didn't see them today, I saw Henrik Larsson. He came on, he changed the game, that is what killed the game. Sometimes you talk about Ronaldinho and Eto'o and people like that; you need to talk about the proper footballer who made the difference, and that was Henrik Larsson tonight."

Now that's what we call a game changer. I liked this guy, quiet and very good at what he did and he did it even after he broke his leg. You were guaranteed every time he came on, the game will be more lively.<3

OT: can someone pls translate late this for me PLEASE. Google translate just go me more confused about what Iker said to his teammates in the tunnel.

    • Burning Witch says:

Iniesta changed the game when he came on the second half, but yeah, he was nobody then, UEFA had to say after Euro 2008 that he and Xavi are geniuses.

  2. wia729 says:

Cannot forget this man. King Larsson.

  3. Peter says:

Eto'o moves to Anzhi Makhachkala! He gets 60 million € in 3 years! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYh4wt4cSYs

    Good luck legend! :)

  4. Fame says:

This men right here is legend where ever he goes I will never forget how instant he change the game against arsenal came in made that quick pass to eto and then the second winning goal pass. I feel soory the lost of his brother but henrik wish he can came back to barca and coach one day..class written all over that me..bless

    • andres says:

he's coaching a team in the swedish 2 division now. hope he can get some experience! would be nice too se him coaching a young barca team in the future!

      • Robin Pansar says:

Andre, to correct you a little the division is actually called "Superettan". The highest division in Sweden is called "Allsvenskan".

The swedish division system goes like this:

        Allsvenskan
        Superettan
        Div 1
        Div 2
        and so on….

        • andres says:

ye but first division is allsvenskan second superettan who he train i know he's coachin landskrona enna

  5. Robin Pansar says:

Henrik Larsson is without a doubt the best swedish footballer of all time. I'm a swedish lad myself at 17 years old and I've met the team that Henrik's son plays at. The team's name is Högaborgs BK and they are really good! Many swedish people forget Henrik because of Zlatan and I think that it's a real shame… But I will NEVER forget Henrik and the hard life he´s gone through and personally I think that Henrik were a lot better then Zlatan will ever be!

  6. ChrisKamara says:

OT: Pique out for the Supercup :(

  7. hamad_ali says:

BREAKING NEWS : Pique got injured in training and won't be available for selection against Porto . test are being made to know the full extent of the injury .

    • how that fuk did that happen… thats gr8. Our 2 best defenders are having injury problems… I feel like its Mou doing some Voodoo shit.

      Lineup for Porto?

      Valdes
      Alves-Mach-Abidal-Adriano
      Xavi-Busq-Iniesta
      Pedro-Messi-Villa

subs: Sanchez for Pedro and Xavi for Fabregas?

      • InIesta_92 says:

That is horrible news, i just hope pique is fit for the start of the season. maybe fontas should be given a big chance???
on the bright side alexis trained normally along with maxwell so they will be available for selection.

        • LM_10 says:

fontas??? Masch and Abidal who are not even CBs are way more reliable than him.

        • Write_theFuture says:

Terrible news :( . But Fontas? I don't think this is the time to be testing him, this is a single game that has a title at stake. Fontas is already very uncertain and shaky against preseason teams, put him in against a world class attacking team like Porto and we would be sitting ducks. No way he can hold off the likes of Hulk and Falcao (or did he already officially move to Atletico?) Either way, Abidal and Mascherano please. Pep should ease Fontas in with small games and sub appearances so he can gain confidence and experience. Hope Pique gets well soon. Who would have thought that our two world class iconic centerbacks would both be injured at the same time, BEFORE the season even starts. :(

      • Erich says:

LOL How can you know already now what subs would make sense?

  8. love me barca says:

    ot:

Did u read the letter of mou for madrid fans in their site?(it is in goal.com)

He has called pep, barca,… Hypocritical (not clear to barca, but his words are hint to barca, pep)

Why didnt he teach from his ugly attitudes and dont be human?

I hate him very very very(n times) much.

My God plz help to barca very much for beat mou in pitch again.

  9. Gib says:

OT:Pique got injured during today's training session and won't be able to take part in the European Super Cup game on Friday.

  10. AniBarca says:

    Who's gonna replace Pique?

  11. Ghost_of_Sparta says:

Well fuck me in the ass and call me Shreder, Pique is injured!!!!

  12. Nedoxx says:

Abidal is as good as piqué and im being fair here , and with the recent performance of Adriano im not that worried abt our defence actually that may give adriano a bit more time to play

    Alves Mash Abidal Adriano
    Xavi buquets Iniesta
    MVP

    • Mou's gay says:

yea, there wont be a huge loss of quality. i mean pique and puyol r the best, but im not worried about the masch and abidal pairing. as long as no more injuries happen we should be fine

  13. Lotte says:

I'm Swedish and I'm so proud of Henke! We don't have that many football legends but he sure is one. I heard that radio programme, and I almost cried. He has always seemed so in control and cool, and all the time he was suffering for his brother.

  14. hectorinho says:

    Legend.

He is beloved in every club he played at, and well respected by his peers.

  15. acceptit says:

for _titi_ i couldn't answer in the other post

arbeloa didn't mean to do that because as you know footballer's shoes are very rough, if he intended to do it then villa's leg would've been broken to pieces, that's why he immediately got up to fight. arbeloa was walking backwards and he slightly touched villa.
let me tell you what diving means. its either falling to the ground when you're not touched or just exaggerating so that the referee gives the other team a red/yellow card.
    exaggerating IS diving.
pedro SAW arbeloa and could've moved in another direction but he didn't. dive.
i didn't want messi to give his shirt to the fan. I wanted him to APOLOGIZE. if cristiano did that at camp nou then all the media would've trashed him.
and i'm still waiting for ozil's apology because its stupid to do that.

  16. Nilssonius says:

I am from Sweden but I did not listen when he was in "Sommarpratarna" so I shall read this. He is a swedish football legend. I think I prefer him over Zlatan, mainly due to his football intelligence. Moreover, "Henke" won the Champions League, something Zlatan never has and probarly never will.

  17. Jay K says:

Not too bothered about Pique's injury to be honest if this had happened in last years series of clasico's then it wud be panic stations time. Who knows when La liga will start so he may miss 3 games at most.

  18. semko says:

Pique injured himself at this evening's training, out for 3 weeks. =/

  19. kattanib says:

I remember you so much Larsson, I honestly do, a doctor in the field without doubt. Whenever Rijkaard subbed him in, the entire game would change. As mentioned before, his contribution at the Arsenal Final was phenomenal "Thank you Larsson". Three other players I can recall who had the same impact at Rijkaard's Barca, are Guily, Belletti, and Davids.

  20. love me barca says:

pique injury for 3 weeks is very bad news, now we should be hopeful that abidal or masch dont be injury in this 3 weeks, becus i havent confidence to busi and fontas for CB. They are very slow and bad in one to one occasions.
I say again that bartra is very better than busi, fontas for CB.

  21. Vyder says:

I agree with you. But I prefer Gomez over Bartra. He was awesome in preseason

  22. LM_10 says:

Any1 but fontas in place of Pique would do against porto. As shaky as he already is, hulk could take him to cleaners.
    Alves-Mascherano-Abidal-Adriano

    • Marooon says:

So much for your faith in our youngsters =/

      • LM_10 says:

I have always been in favor of youngsters but that doesn't mean every single one of the would be good enough for 1st team. It's clear that Bartra and Sergi Gomez have better future than fontas and he was only promoted this season to make up the numbers. I'd be happy if fontas proves me wrong but he hasn't shown anything as of yet.

    • El Traductor says:

Benzema was owning Abidal in the first leg of Supercopa so i dont know what youre trying to get at…

      • Write_theFuture says:

Well Abidal was owning attackers all throughout last season, so I dont know what YOURE trying to get at. :p I don't think we should doubt his quality as a CB anymore, he has been immense there on so many occasions. I think Alves-Mascherano-Abidal-Adriano is perfectly stable, nowhere near the security Pique and Puyol provide but still quality all around.

    • trinibarca.4.life says:

show some more faith in fontas please

  23. Anonymous_69 says:

If a very off form Abidal and Mascherano, playing together for the first time, can hold an on form Real Madrid (away!) attack back somewhat, then I trust they can do it against Porto. This injury sucks, but Pique and Puyol will both be back in 3 weeks, and with La Liga strike certain to go on for a second week, and with the international break coming up after that, they won't miss too much.

The only thing that worries me about this injury is that Pique seems to be suffering. Couldn't start the preseason because of some little injury, came back, then got another little injury, came back, and now he has a serious injury. I hope Puyol and Pique come back at 100%, we are going to need them if our defense is to survive the up coming season. Fontas isn't bad, but he isn't ready. It would have been safer taking back Botia and lending Sporting Fontas for a few years in exchange.

  24. VEB says:

    Henrik Larsson > Zlatan Ibrahimovic

    • Neuro says:

zlatan is great serie A based player….last yr at times i felt – wow is this same player failed in barca. he is a great proof that playing @barca is not easy and require special quality.

      • VEB says:

Yeah that special quality is called not being a slow lazy bastard, and Ibrahimovic is exactly that, in one game he even covered less ground that Victor Valdes did you know that ????

  25. ZLATAN!!! says:

TotalBarca admins, can anyone shed some light on the La Liga strike? Since it's affecting one of Barca's most important competitions

    • Nedoxx says:

Well , there will be another meeting tomorrow but La liga strikes is still on for the next weekend games at the moment.

And if that happen then la liga start will be delayed for atleast another week since there will be Internationals games ( World cup qualify and friendly ) 2 and 6 september

      • ZLATAN!!! says:

Cool, thanks for that. Any news on their progress to reach an agreement or are they far from it?

  26. Che G. says:

Larsson is somewhat mythical, and an unsung legend of the game. He was no Ballon d'Or runner up, but he had something else that I miss in todays football. He always fought with his heart and he never gave up.

I'm really glad that Larsson played for Barca. Now he's a part of Barca's history, and Barca are a part of Larsson's history.

  27. japheth says:

did any body know our club icon whereabout?;cryuff

  28. trinibarca.4.life says:

henrik larsson is a legend and i will always remeber what he did at paris

the best swedish plyer of all time…zlatan was nothing com[ared to him

  29. trinibarca.4.life says:

btw piwue is out injured for 3 weeks

I told pep we needed a cb and not csec

  30. Mou's gay says:

he wont be testing out a new formation on a team like porto. maybe a rhomboid midfield against real betis, but not porto.
id rather have masche at cb than a new formation in which ppl will need time 2 get used to

    • trinibarca.4.life says:

real betis? really….show some respect to a team that beat us badly in their home ground

  31. minges86 says:

it was very moving to hear those words about his family and his brother. Not just the bad things about his brothers addiction, but the way he doesnt want his son to be a footballer, how much his kids mean to him and his wife. I always enjoy hearing things that make people realise that not all professional footballers live the glamour life… they have problems and issues just like everyone else

  32. trinibarca.4.life says:

pep isnt gonna play 3 full backs in defence…thats just suicide

  33. Dimitar_MKD says:

The best in the story with Pique's injury is that : He and Puyol will be back in same time, 3 weeks!

  34. soulmate1960 says:

The team will be without the service of Pique,Puyol and Villa for two la liga season opener matches…..i wonder what the starting line up will look like.possibly
    VV

    ALVES MASCHERANO ABIDAL ADRIANO

    BUSQUET
    XAVI INIESTA

    SANCHEZ PEDRO
    MESSI

  35. El Traductor says:

As someone who has siblings, I can only imagine what hell it'd be to have a younger brother die from drug addiction. It's really too bad that it has to happen to anyone.

  36. Anonymous_69 says:

That defense is 100% suicidal. Adriano and Alves are wingbacks. I don't think people realize what a 3 man defense is… There are no fullbacks! There are three CBs, a RCB and LCB, no wingbacks. Playing Adriano as part of a 3 man defense ahead of Mascherano is saying you think Adriano is a better CB than Masch. Same goes for Alves. If we ever play a 3 man defense this season, it will be Masch/Puyol-Pique-Abidal.

    • Burning Witch says:

What do you expect from a ce$c lover? They don't use their brains. Arse-anal boy will be a benchwarmer, maybe from time to time we'll see Iniesta on the left wing, he improved his shooting, so who knows.

  37. Sempre Barça! says:

So thats both Puyol an Pique out for three weeks……already

  39. Asoto says:

Great player, thanks for everything he did for us! :)

  40. laurent says:

This space is for Larsson, please pay some f.uck.ing respect. This guy was great when he played for Barca and not just that, he is a good human with a noble heart as well – this is truly Barca material. I guess some Vikings are Saints after all.

  41. alpha_phenix says:

i never forgot his outstanding performance against Arsenal in final of champion league ! :)
