In a bid to pre-empt presidential candidates including Sandro Rosell from using the promise of a new star signing to entice votes in this up-coming club election, incumbent president Joan Laporta non-chalantly dropped a hint.
“Sandro Rosell will not be able to present his candidacy with a promised signing of two players as I already have their verbal agreements that could see them at the club even before June 30. That means he will have to wait for next year to sign someone if in the end he does win the presidency.”
Meant more as a punch-line in his opening speech during Johan Cruyff’s honorary title presentation ceremony, the statement could not be taken at face value. But Catalan Sport’s editor Jose Luis Carazo thinks otherwise.
In his editorial, the journalist is of the opinion that while what was said was not serious the fact that every team, Barcelona included, needs to refresh its squad every year to maintain a certain level of competitiveness, the proclamation may have its truth.
If it is, Carazo believes the two players mentioned, though not by name, are Arsenal’s midfielder Cesc Fabregas (22) and Valencia’s striker David Villa (28) – long time transfer targets of the president. Another possibility, according to him, could be Inter Milan’s 19-year-old striker Mario Balotelli who recently had a fall-out with his coach Jose Mourino.
That said Carazo also believes that only Pep Guardiola is the only person who will ultimately decide on any transfers as agreed with the club when he renewed his contract last year.

man villa is great but he is 28 (in 2 years he is 30 and then we need again a new striker or winger). that would mean: paying 40 mio euro and selling for 0 mio euro. get aguero or angel di maria for less than that sum and sell them in some years – if you want – for maybe the same price.
Actually I think he's perfect for us! Mostly for 2 reasons, one is that he won't be in the way of any youngster that want's to come up the ranks from the academy and he secondly he could be the perfect teacher for the youngsters that have broken through. He's experience is invaluable!

Balotelli is disgusting, but we need a profile to cover for the loss of Henry. We need that type of strong, vertical forward that can play from the wing, and he represents a magnificent chance, as he will most probably be sold this summer.
I also feel a winger is much more necessary than Cesc, even if Pedro has done very well this year. But we need cover for Iniesta's injuries and next year we will need to give the players much more rest with the World Cup and everything.

I'm pretty sure Pep would never allow Balotelli to come. The good news is, Pep should have the final say in these matters. Personally, I prefer Villa. I'm not sure we should get both Villa and Cesc in the same season. It won't hurt for Cesc to play another season for Arsenal.

I don't think David Villa would be too good. I mean, in our new positional system, we play Iniesta on the left and Pedro so the obvious transfer would be someone that is more of a winger than a striker and is actually good on the right. David Villa is good in a second striker/winger on the left role and that would only work if Pep went back to the regular 4-3-3 but I doubt that will happen considering that Messi enjoys playing in his new position more than on the wing. Also, it seems like we are finally getting the best out of Ibra like this. Jesus Navas would be awesome but I don't think that's possible.
I agree with completely.Villa's best position is a Second striker in 4-4-2 formation while he can also play as a centre forward and sometimes at the left wing position in a 4-3-3 formation.signing Villa wmeans that we will rotate between Ibra-Messi-Villa for our no10 and no9 position but I dont think w need him.He is for me the best striker on earth but on form Zlatan is also great.Silva would be the best addition to our squad with the 4-2-3-1 formation as he can play left or right or in the Messi's role.if not a normal winger is needed
Oh I forgot about Silva's versatility! He has been off form but he is more than capable of playing well in all those positions. Only problem is, he doesn't add much width and I think we could really use more width considering that Alves is the only one that adds any wide play at all and believe it or not, he does have defensive duties :p

What's wrong with Balloteli??? Pep is the best Man Manager and can change his attitude around anyway. This boy can play and he is much younger than Villa. He is in the Eto'o mould. I think he could be on par with Bojan anyway but another good positibility for a young striker is Lukaku from I think Anderlect in Belgium. You guys should see videos of him. He is fantastic!

villa would be great signing but getting a player of 28 for around 50m would be damn stupid. last year we signed ibra for 64m and he is 28. no more getting players for huge prices especially when they can perform for 2-3 yrs.
maria should be signed for teh LW, has lot of quality and wouldn't cost a huge sum. as much as i like pedro his performance against teh big teams still isn't top notch. Against inter he was great but many times he has failed. not saying he won't improve but we can't risk a match like arsenal again.
messi can play as central striker better than anyone so when ibra ages bojan would be ready. plus we would have pedro who can play on teh right as well as left along with di maria.
btw iniesta performs way better from midfield rather then teh LW. This will allow for more options in times of injuries.

why is everyone so down on mario balotelli….so what the guy has a a bad boy persona. his skills on the field are great. he has immense potential and an excellent frame. the kid is 6'2 and hes only 19…he looks like hes 25. IF hes brought into barca it would be after a long process that pep would have to approve of. he would know that hes coming to a TEAM and will have to compete for his spot in the starting 11. you cant fault a 19 year old with his talent for being upset at not getting time on the field.
as you can probably tell i AM a fan of balotelli. ive never entertained the idea of him at barca but evidently it is under consideration. Im not sure if he has the passing ability and technical ball skills that is necessary for a player in barca to succeed….but hes young and thats what training is for.

Cesc – He is almost as creative as xavi but more offensive (long shots). We need someone that can give iniesta and xavi a way to rest when neeeded or when 1 of them have injueries. We have all seen him play in "la roja" and now already knows how to play barca way (he was from cantera but left many years ago).
Its true he might be bench if we get him for next season mostly, if xavi and iniesta dont get any injuries, but we cannot to pass him if we get the chance. Remember Xavi is entering his 31st year soon and basicly has been the best creative midfielder since euro 08. We have to expect a slump or injuriy soon.. this is when cesc can also get a chance to rep. Worst case scenario we have him as super rep, which gives depth to our bench on mid.
Villa- He is a goal scorer with pace.. DOUBLE PERIOD! He can play both wing AND CF! Which means he can start playing our much needed LW but if ibra gets on a slump again, gets injured or suspended we have 1 of the best goal scoring strikers to cover. We have seen he can play barca style since he plays in spain national team and in his top 2 position he moves to the left and right. A 28 year old striker is a great thing.. experience beats youth 90% of th time. He would have at least 3 to 4 years with barca.. thats a long term commitment by itself. Also, Ibra is same age or a year older i believe >_>.

Ok guys I am really feeling bad towards people saying that Cesc is overated.we should differentiate between the Team needs and the quality of the players.Outside Barca there are great players and not any player who is playing outside BArca is overrated.Cesc is possibly one of the best 5 midfielders in the world(Xavi is no1 while Iniesta,Cesc,Lamps,Sneijder and Gerard are behind him),he is the captain of a Europian powerhorse and one of the best 5 players at EPL(which is argubaly the best in world),he has the qualities of a player who can become a Legend in the future and also he is only 22 so he is not overrated,he also has the enthusiasm of a warrior so we cant say that every player we are linked to,is overrated.However,this doesnt mean that we need him,we have in his position 5 superb players with also about 3-4 great players coming from La Masia so there is no need for Cesc but he is not overrated,thats it.

i think ppl in this blog overrate angel di maria….not fabregas. as mido pointed out…young fabs is already one of the best midfielders in the world at 22 (i would say the list goes somethin like: xavi iniesta fabregas sneijder lampard gerrard ). no barca dont NEED him but we can def make use of his skills to improve the team and give us some depth. yes we have promising youngster coming thorough the cantera BUT no one on this planet KNOWS if they will end up fulfill their potential and become true stars for barcelona. Thiago and JDS have a loooong way to go to achieve what fabregas has.
Yesss, Villa and Fabregas will make incredible buys. Those two are worth every euro we pay for them. Now that our team is considered to be the best in the world it's hard to argue that we really NEED big signings, but our football is a spectacle and if we can afford to build a better and more entertaining squad, why should anyone complain about us doing it? We will not be like Madrid even if we buy world class players because half of the squad will still be our youth players. As long as players from la masia form the core of the team we will never be like the evil empire.
The best player ever deserves to play on the best team ever. The best team ever does not include Mario Balotelli. Maybe Villa, Silva, Aguero, Fabregas, David Luiz or even Pato, but Balotelli should never play for Barca simply because of his character.

Why would you spend 40 million on a 28 year turning 29 by the time he comes to Barca. It is crazy money. Ribery and Cesc should be the priorities with Henry likely to move on. Angel Di Maria is not good enough. He did nothing against Liverpool.
