Cruyff’s Corner: “Iniesta is a special person”
Johan Cruyff wrote an article for El Periodico which outlined his thoughts on yesterday’s final in South Africa. The original can be found here.
It was a very close game but of a very questionable quality. Holland didn’t want to play, at least not true to their typical style. Spain tried to remain faithful to their style but were lost a good bit of the match. In the end Spain decided to win the game by playing more individually than as a team. And they were able to due to a miracle goal from the player from Fuentealbilla that was raised in La Masia, the youth system of Barca, which is one of the best schools in the world.
1 - When Holland played like Inter
People in Holland asked me ‘can we play like Inter? Can we beat Spain in the same way that Mourinho beat Barca?’ I said no, no way. And I said no because I detest that style of play. I said no because I didn’t think that the Dutch would dare to do that. I didn’t think they’d renounce their style. I said no because they have their own style even though they lack the big names from the past. I was wrong. True, they didn’t park the bus but they almost did. They didn’t want the ball. And unfortunately, they played dirty. So dirty that they deserved to be two men down early in the game because of two ugly fouls that hurt even me. I wasn’t hurt that my initial answer was wrong. I was hurt because Holland picked an ugly way to try and win the trophy.
2 - When Spain became discombobulated
That ugly and rough style put the Spanish team in disarray. If that’s what they wanted they got it but they still lost. Spain, after twenty stupendous minutes, during which they played as a team and above all, with only one striker even though it seemed like there were five, started to fall into the Dutch trap. Spain fell apart after those twenty minutes. They weren’t compact on the field. Their lines were separated by 10 meters or more. They couldn’t find their game and lacked pressure. And this went on for a good while. One team practiced ‘anti-football’ because they thought that was the only way to win. The game ended 0-0 because Spain couldn’t find a way through the rough play that the Dutch employed. Afterwards, in overtime, it was more fun, more appealing to the eye even though the game wasn’t that much better.
3 - The worst refereeing display in the World Cup
When we say from time to time that we don’t like to talk about referees, it’s true, but when you see last night’s game it’s hard to shy away from the debate. You’re free to have a bad game and make mistakes but you’re not allowed to create your own justice or invent your own idea on how the rules should be interpreted. Not only did he forgive two Dutch players (even Robben deserved a second yellow), he also looked the other way when he was needed most. The World Cup Final deserves a great referee and above all, a referee that isn’t afraid to do his job.
4 - A dedication straight from the heart
I could talk about and congratulate the two great goalkeepers (Casillas and Stekelenburg) but I’ll focus on Iniesta because he’s had a tough, injury plagued season that wasn’t helped by the loss of his friend (Dani Jarque). You’ve got to have a big heart, a lot of courage and be a special person to write that on your jersey and show it to the entire world (Dani Jarque, always with us). Spain won, Iniesta scored and triumphed ‘a la Barca’.

Cruyff, Holland as when you played in the team sir, is no more. Most of the players play in the EPL or Bundesliga, leagues known for physical play. It's not that they weren't true to their style, its just that their style is no longer of the orange you played in. It is almost an EPL team that was on the field last night, trying to win by brute force because they lacked the simple talent and tactics to even be able to give a good show. Holland has no style anymore, your clockwork orange is long dead.
The Netherlands, that played the final are a disgrace to football. Netherlands were among the very few teams who cherished and played attacking, attractive football throughout its history.
You can say it is a victory for football that Spain won. The two best football teams in the last few years (Barcelona and Spain) are the teams that haven't changed their style and always stayed true to attacking, beautiful football. Teams go defensive because they think that makes their defense stronger, but Spain were the most attacking team in the tournament, and yet they had the best defense. Some people don't realize it, but one of the strongest ways to defend is to keep possession, and apply pressure to get the ball back as quickly as possible. Have many times have we seen Spain lose after getting a goal? Not in the last few years, that's for sure. It's not because Spain get the goal and put everyone in defense, it's because they just keep the ball. It is so much more simple, pleasing on the eye, and much less risky. I hope this sends a message to the world that you don't need to be defensive in order to have a strong defense. Spain have the strongest defense in the world, but that's because the best way to defend is to attack.
But Netherlands managed to play fast, wing-based, dynamic and onward football up to the final (ie. against Uruguay, it was nice to watch, chaotic though) and suddenly they "are no more" and "they play in leagues known for physical play"? Something is just isn't right there. I understand them though – they wanted this title so badly so they overthrown their style (yet creating two must-score chances that Robben wasted), but I will never forget nor forgive such dirty and brutal play.
Inter and Chelsea both played their so called attacking games against other teams except Barca. Actually they don't have one style of their own to which they stick. They adapt to the opposition teams and play accordingly. Sad but true.
Agreed, but i don't have to like that style of play and i openly dismiss it as cowardness. But i understand teams that use it, though.
And yes, this is the style that is very efficient while used against teams like Barca or Spain. Lucky for us, not always, as final (or semifinal against Germany, or semifinal against Chelsea) showed.
You dont have to like that style, thats why you support Barca. We have a definite style and thats what makes our club unique.
No matter how others call their brand of football as success against teams playing beautiful football, they got to realize Barca and Spain have seen success with joga bonita.
Personally, I believe every club or league should have definite style of play that will bring in more success for them. The reason Italians and English were poor that they compromised with their style(not like the English had any
)…to an extend zee Germans too..i mean counter attack alone cant win you the world cup, will it?
Or may be I am a little idealistic.
Agreed again
).
Italians are in the middle of the generation-gap. Veterans departed, unexperienced youngsters brought up. Unimaginable chaos on the field as a result.
English… well, i really don't know what happened to them. Were they exhausted with a long and difficult season? Phisically or mentally? Both? And they, indeed, showed not a sign of style (not even a (in)famous kick and run
Germans, on the other hand, solid as always, very focused and yeah, very concentrated on counter attacks. And as time proved, you cannot win a title only with counter attack especially when there's Puyol/Pique ready to break every single one of them.
Anyway i'm glad that the tournament is done. Our heroes can go on well deserved vacation and start preparations for upcoming season.
Don't understand why your surprised by the English performance? They've always been shit when it comes to international football atleast since I started watching football. I for one would have been more surprised if they had done well!
Well. I've been watching them on several tournaments (starting with 1990 WC) and they were always in very good shape, very good form and considered as one of the possible winners, playing quite nice football. This year, watching them play was like watching a bunch of zombies crawling on the pitch. No speed, no stamina, lack of … well, almost everything. And yet, their squad, at least on paper, was quite impressive.
Well, I was just wondering, why did Capello take Crouch who has scored goals for England and not even play him ? When both Hesky and Rooney were terrible up front.
Dunno. Rooney's performance is quite understandible – he had a murderous season, including few injuries. Heskey is not very young for a striker, and i guess he left his best years behind him. I dunno much 'bout Crouch, but it is obvious (at least for me) to try another player if everyone else is feeling under par. I never liked Capello.
yeah, but if you happen to read the Dutch coach's statements, its like he himself does not believe in total football, meaning its not just the different quality of his players compared to the dutch of old but more like a decision to abandon it and try a different approach, whc it must be said has given him good results in the runup to the WC.

"When Holland Played like Inter"………That alone is a such a telling paragraph and powerful SLAP in Mourinho's face…Bravo !! Johan Cruyff for once again showing your class and the courage to stick to your convictions and be so openly critical of the Dutch game plan. You Sir, are a true living legend!!
Thanks for your prompt response to the request gang and particularly you Peterson.. Shows that you do care about us Joe Scmoe's.
"La Masia truly is a Birthplace and Cradle for the Past, Present and Future Barca Legends!!"
Mourinho succeeded in bus parking because INIESTA did not play the 2 legs.
I am happy spain won the worldcup with 8 barca players because i know MOU will be crying silently that his tactics was finally defeated and that xavi and puyol and iniesta have won what him or his crynaldo will never win in all thier football career.
I'm happy for Iniesta, I was soo woried about his health during hard season, and even more after game Spain-Poland, than during tournament he recieved so many fauls, pobre Andresito, so I'm soo hapy that Andres scored this important goal, he deserves it like no one else. He is my hero, for a long time he is my fav player, and now I'm soo proud of him. Viva Fuentealbilla!
Iniesta is a true, humble hero!!
Do you read/speak Spanish? Did you know that a musical group in Spain wrote a song that includes Iniesta (I just read about it in Marca
). Here is a link. http://www.tiramillas.net/2010/07/12/deporte/1278…
The song is by Delafé y las Flores Azules (and is not available on iTunes in the USA
) and is called Espíritu Santo. The line says: "Hablemos de fútbol mejor: que Iniesta se merece el oro de balón. Que si no se lo dan, me corto una mano. O mejor me corto las dos, por dios". (We're talking about better football: that Iniesta deserves the "oro de balón." That if they don't give it to him, I'll cut off a hand. Or better I'll cut off the two, by God" (okay, a little weird!).
Nice! Thanks for sharing, you're right this lyrics are weird, but long time ago (ok not so long, it was last year) I came across this song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APcsT18mfNE I know it's not the best in the world, not my type of music, but like it:) so let's celebrate with Andres, I hope he will soon do some updates of his website, twitter and facebook, because players couldn't use this during WC
Thanks! I don't have that song on my iPod, but I do have the "Messi" song from that same album, from iTunes!
I am sure he will be making updates — after he gets some sleep! I don't think these guys slept for over 48 hours! I love them all!!!!
"Messi" is good too:)
I hope Andres will rest a bit (if this possible in Spain right now:P?) and enjoy vacations, he already made facebook entry and posted cute photo:)
I am so happy with the comments here, because in the Dutch forums, everyone is hating on Johan Cruyff.
because he is TELLING THE TRUTH!!!
I cant beleive sum of the Dutch fans, alot think Spain didnt deserve the Cup.
They must have been watching another game.
it's always hard to lose, especially important games, but to tell the truth, Spain deserves cup, Holland played awful game, and I think that Webb was to "nice" in few actions, there were more situations that should end with yellow cards, but it's my oppinion only. It was sad to look at Dutch team after match, but football it's like that, no time for loosers coz we are the champions of the world
Cruijff was great but he is the only legend who never won the world cup, who didn't show up at the most important football match ever, he also didn't show up when he was asked to play in 78, and also in 90 and 94 when he was asked to coach us. He has flashes of brilliance but his main interest is his own way, he wore clothes of different sponsors and proved that the team is very important but that JC is slightly more important, he brought Ajax and Barca a lot but nowadays we get sick of him in Holland. What did he expect, that we would roll over and let Spain get away, they have better players so we did it in the right way, fight fight fight, if it wasn't for that stupid Webb and Iniesta's diving we might have made it, at least we came closer than in 1974. All he does is moan about 74 and how this beautiful game made everybody happy, but the Germans won!
"we did it in the right way, fight fight fight, if it wasn't for that stupid Webb and Iniesta's diving we might have made it…."
So this is the "right" way? There are two images that are now being shown to illustrate this match: Iniesta's goal and de Jong ugly, stupid tackle. How can you defend tactics like this?
[youtube CekIw5moE5c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CekIw5moE5c youtube]
this situation reminds me Zidane-Materazzi awful situation, I think it's not a football spirit, sad to watch such stupid things during the most important game in the world
When I saw this and some of the other fouls that the Dutch made around this point in the game, I was sooo angry. I honestly believe that De Jong was just reckless and hit Alonso by mistake (terrible skills to miss the ball by THAT much, though!!). I know why Webb only gave a yellow card — because it was the final. In any other game, I am sure that he would have shown a red card, and De Jong would have received a 3+ match suspension.
And van Bommel should have been sent off, too. Now, I also admit that Iniesta should have received a yellow for pushing van Bommel, and that Puyol should have been carded (again) for making contact with Robben later on. But either consciously or not, Webb let the cards "even out." Had he been following the letter of the law, Holland would have been down to 9 men by then, Iniesta would not have had a chance to push van Bommel, and Puyol would have received a second yellow.
And as for the Dutch second yellow — he DID follow the letter of the law. Iniesta was tugged (yes, there WAS contact!), he went down, the Dutch player got the card.
(SIGH). In the end, the best team DID win!! And our Iniesta is a true hero!!!
I haven't heard anybody about the "beheading" of De Zeeuw in the semi's, that was as clumsy as De Jong's foul, only Van Bommel's foul was intentional. But I'm sick of card waving and diving by players like Iniesta and Xavi, they did in on Sunday and they do it a lot of times when playing with Barca, football is war like Michels said and it was war, who cares what people think of you when you get the opportunity to win the WC! Most of the reactions are like the reactions after the Inter game, you can't play like that because we are Barca and we play beatiful football bla bla bla, it's Cruijffs mantra, well people like Mourinho and Van Marwijk don't give a FUCK in certain circumstances and rightly so!
No kid ..you didn't make it because you didn't play football!!
p.s at least Cruyff's generation will be remembered for the beautiful football and the team that never won the world cup but should have. That's the biggest compliment.
What do you think this generation will be remembered for? For me they are a ****ing disgrace for football.
And I pity those who actually believe in these "tactics".

You are the perfect example of someone who probably never played sport/football competitively, "you didn't play football" is that what you said after Barca were beaten by Mourinho, everybody has their own right to play they want, otherwise Germany and Italy would never have won the WC based on this childish nonsense. Go home, start playing chess and if you want to see artistry go to a museum!
And I'm guessing you have played competitively but never really got nowhere! I really wonder why though .. hm!
And no that's not what I said after the Inter loss .. actually we played football and albeit so did they just the anti part of football.
But see playing football doesn't entail breaking the legs of the other opponents ..hence the rules and cards and all .. but maybe you haven't gotten that part yet. For you winning is everything.
And I'm not quite sure what the hell you are doing here ..that is ..why are you a "Barca fan" if you oppose beautiful football? Or maybe you haven't seen them play really? Or is it because we've won everything? .. and yet somehow I didn't have to go to a museum to see the artistry of our players.
I used to be very talented so think again and played against someone who played for Barca and was the captain of the beautiful Dutch team this WC;) But the reactions here are pathetic, it's narcistic like Cruijff, "Inter play anti-football", "Holland play anti-football" no they don't they play a certain style that you and I probably don't like, it's a fair choice. But at least they fought, Iniesta was just a diving cheat and I despise it, he should try martial arts, than he'll know what a real kick or punch is.
dude I also live in Holland. But Cruyff is a honest guy. He at least admitted that Spain deserved it, unlike alot of you fans.
78 was a year where Holland was too overconfident and Germany beat them with 'less atractive football', and the better team lost that year. Which is a shame.
People hate him in Holland, because we dont like critics here. We dont want to listen to him.
Do you know why he succeed in Barcelona? Because they listen to him, and take the critics in a good way. In Holland, people feel attacked.
Cruijff has a very distinct way of playing football but he is also the perfect example of a narcistic talent that can't stand any critics, a man who as I said before is the only legend that didn't show up in 74, 78,90 and 94. Money was more important and everybody in Holland knows it! Someone wrote tnat he acted like Mussert well that's one hell of a compliment!
In 1990, I was a kid and drew a flag that said "Holland Forever". This team used to make me dream. But during their game against Spain, they made me… well you guess it.
The sad thing is, teams such as Holland and Brazil had the potential to play a much more enjoyable style of football. Hopefully, they'll revert back to their original style.
"Go home, start playing chess and if you want to see artistry go to a museum!"
u call urself barcaholland! u r a disgrace man……
hav u ever played chess ? hav u ever build up those pawns as an long run attacking approach ? when a defender likes pique overlaps high up in the pitch after a sequence of magical triangle formations…. what does that tell u?
i gues as a chess player u cant think more than 2 moves… and you probably love moving ur queen aimlessly!!!!
geni-asses like u still thinks football is a game of athletes.. no place for the brain!
i sugest u think again ..
well can u ?
So i see Barca still hasn't got over losing a champions league they felt was their right. You can play any style of football you want if you win. Inter won the champions league. Now get over yourselves and win it next season.
