Offside: Belgian couple name their baby boy Barça

Catalan based newspaper Sport reported that a Belgian couple, Wesley Beeckman and Anneke Maes, decided to name their newly born child Barça! The parents, who both are dedicated Barcelona fans, explained to the FC Barcelona official website that the idea, of naming their child Barça, came to them one night while they were watching Barcelona players playing, so they decided to name their baby boy by the name of the club they loved: Barcelona.

The mother of the child, Anneke Maes, says: “Suddenly, I told my husband that if we have a child, I would like to call him Barça; then he winked at me, looked at me and said ‘yes, this is the name of my son!’.” The couple, however, confirmed that if they had a baby girl they were going to call her Lona.

On April 26, in the city of Sint-Truiden, Anneke gave birth to a boy, whom she called Barça as she agreed with her husband before. “My family did not know what to say and, initially, they did not like the name but now they are accustomed to it,” Anneke said.

Despite the surprise of many, the couple assured “we are very proud [for] our son to have the name of one of the best football clubs in the world.” The couple also hope they could at least convey their love for the club to their child, who now has its name! How can it be otherwise? The child, Barça, is already a culé and has been a Barcelona member since July 19.

"Barça" is a nice idea to name a boy or maybe even a girl, aside from the confusions it could cause in a classroom where every kid or teacher could be calling you "Barka"… unless they know about this club!

"Lona" however is definitely a pretty elegant female name :)

But could you imagine if you're a couple who are diehard Real Madrid fans? Using this logic… you may call your boy "Real", in which case his future classmates will have a field day.. saying things like "Let's get Real", "Is this a Real deal?", "Real pain in the butt"… not unlike all those corny headlines you've read over the years that English-speaking journos have come up with.

Or you could call your boy…. "MAD". And if they ever do, those parents will truly be that LOL

Haha, true fans :) I like to see that!

Sidenote: Guys, I am an ardent and tru Barcelona fan and will most probably never never ever change. Some of you might have seen some of my comments before. I really am hurt by the comments (as reported by goal.com) which Xavi has made about Arsenal and Fabregas coming in January.
He said something like Fabregas will come sooner as soon as he realises that Arsenal aren't good enough to compete at the highest level. While there is a good good chance that the latter is a true statement, Xavi has no right to disrespect Arsenal to that extent. It really makes Barca look like an arrogant club that thinks that it is all that and other teams aren't.

Xavi is my second favourite player in the world (after Leo) but he really has to show more humility and respect. It is good for football and FC Barcelona which stands for a lot more than just the game. That's why I am always reassured when Pep speaks because he thinks and rethinks before saying a word.

Dont worry I really believe this another piece of fiction. Puyol said that he had never spoken to Sun about the Cesc transfer recently. I really think this is just media's way of defaming Barca and its stars.

lol well i always said ima name my kid carles.. lol so dats kool a kid name barca lol !…i just hope he doenst end up playing cricket or some shtt like dat lol

  15. Ivich says:

I think this kid should get to see his first match at Camp Nou for free! Fly him and his parents down. It is least the club could do for the parents and the kid. However, it may result, in everybody naming their kid BARCA. :-)
