Chants: El Cant del Barça

Chants: El Cant del Barça

Now that the Gamper Trophy approaches and some of you might be lucky enough to go to Camp Nou to watch our wonderful team fighting against AC Milan, we at totalBarca wished to start a new section where all the Barça related chants can be heard and read (and translated). This way, when you go to Camp Nou, you will be able to sing along with the crowd and understand what you are saying; or maybe you prefer going to Canaletes to celebrate another  title won, or just to watch a Barça match in a bar and cheer them on from afar. Whatever your reason is, we will offer you all the Barça chants or songs you might find along your culé way.

To get started, the most important song every culé must know: Barça’s anthem, ‘El Cant del Barça’.

Lyrics (in Catalan):

Tot el camp
és un clam
som la gent blaugrana
Tant se val d’on venim
si del sud o del nord
ara estem d’acord, ara estem d’acord,
una bandera ens agermana.
Blaugrana al vent
un crit valent
tenim un nom el sap tothom:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!

Jugadors, seguidors,
tots units fem força.
Son molt anys plens d’afanys,
son molts gols que hem cridat
i s’ha demostrat, i s’ha demostrat,
que mai ningú no ens podrà tòrcer.
Blaugrana al vent
un crit valent
tenim un nom el sap tothom:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!

English Translation:

The whole stadium
loudly cheers
We’re the blue and claret supporters
It matters not where we hail from
Whether it’s the south or the north
Now we all agree, we all agree,
One flag unites us in brotherhood.
Blue and claret blowing in the wind
One valiant cry
We’ve got a name that everyone knows:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!

Players, Supporters
United we are strong.
We’ve worked so hard over the years,
We’ve shouted many goals
And we have shown, we have shown,
That no one can ever break us.
Blue and claret blowing in the wind
One valiant cry
We’ve got a name that everyone knows:
Barça, Barça, Baaarça!

This song, written in 1974, has been an important part of club tradition since it was first performed on November 27th of that year, as part of the club’s 75th Anniversary. The words were written by Josep Maria Espinàs and Jaume Picas, while Manuel Valls composed the music. According to the official website,

The fans loved the fact that they could clap their hands in time to its catchy rhythm, and the words perfectly depicted the values of supporting Barça, especially the spirit of welcoming outsiders into Catalan society, a spirit that is reflected all the way through the club membership.”

While the club has had other anthems in its time, El Cant del Barça has stood the test of time as the definitive musical symbol of our beloved club.
