Youth: Barca almost signed Sergio Canales in 2003

Catalan sports daily ‘El Mundo Deportivo’ report Racing Santander starlet Sergio Canales (18) almost joined FC Barcelona, in the summer of 2003.

The youngster from cantabria who has been one of the latest sensations of la liga this season scoring 5 goals in 8 appearences, was virtually tied to Barcelona according to El Mundo. All the foundations of the agreement had been laid with his father and agent Angel Canales, however his mother vetoed the signing saying it was too early for the youngster to move to a bigger club and it was better for Canales to remain in Cantabria for a few more years.

Canales has recently been linked to a move to Barcelona by Madrid sports daily ‘Marca’ along with a host of other european clubs, with Real Madrid being in pole position to sign the youngster from Racing on a €6 million deal.

This guy is sensational! One of the biggest talents in Spain in the last 20 years, no doubt.

    • sachin says:

nah hes being overhyped than he actually is worth. Hes a very good talent but not as good as hes being hyped to be ;)

Chased by Barca at age 11, been instrumental at all youth levels for Spain, hailed as a sensation by Spanish youth team coaches, already scored 5 goals in 8 matches in La Liga from midfield position for a poor team like Santander at age 18!?

I think it's fair to say that he is sensational! I can't believe they managed to get him for such a low price!!

What I meant was potential wise there are better youngsters of a similar age group in Spain. Anyways you'll know what i meant in a few years from now.

          • Steve says:

Maybe so, but Canales is the one who plays in La Liga and does excellent.

Basically this deal is a no risk deal for Real Madrid. If he fails, they could easily get the money back, as they paid so little anyway, but if he does great, he will be worth a fortune.

Name one. I'm actually just curious, it's not that I don't believe you.

          • sachin says:

Thiago Alcantara, ISCO, Dani Parejo, Fran Merida, Ander Herrera

          • Anonymous_69 says:

Would you really say that those players have performed better than Sergio Canales?

          • sachin says:

I've said it before as well, Im talking about potential for the future :)

          • Don_Iuis says:

Certainly Dani Parejo with a doubt, he's a better player than Canales. Parejo is one of the key reasons why Getafe are doing very good. Parejo has been a starter in most Getafe games.
Idk why Madrid went after Canales when they have Dani Parejo

THose players are potential prospects yes, but they havnt performed anywhere near the same level as canales at the moment.

  2. nick says:

thiago is better he is to me iniesta replacement and jds is xavi's replacement gai is just disappointing if you look at the matches played by the reserve team he is hardly ever in the starting line up and if he is he never plays the full ninety minutes. wish we could get live streaming of youth matches but from looking at the line ups if he can't even play 90 minutes for the b team is he even worth being talked about at this stage especcailly when rameu and bartra starts and plays ninety minutes in almost every match at age 18 and sergio roberto at 17 is way more great a prospect i simply no longer see gai fitting in as we have bojan and pedro for the wings not to mention jeffren

  3. Dolce says:

Everyone is talking about his goals but how about his overall displays? Anybody can shine short period of time but can he keep the form and make steady progress? Can he dominate midfield, pass well, dribble etc? Havent seen him too much. Its stupid that we fail to sign teen stars because of the players parents!

    • Marc4barca says:

well yea that ture but everyone loves a scoring midfielder, still i believe he is over hyped and he did himself no favors by joining real madrid cause you already know why but we can't have them all, personally i would prefer arda(LM/AM), eden(RW/RM) or Yohann(AM), didn't put ozil cause i know nothing of this kid. great talent and should he finish this season with 15 goals he would be considered worthy of all this praise.

  4. BArca fan says:

This guy has the ability no doubt, 5 goals in 8 games says it all, it should be 6 in 8 if you count his wrongfully disallowed goal against real. At 18 he has single handly taken racing out of relegation. Only time will tell if he can perform in pressure situations,, but from what i've seen he really has a bright future ahead of him.

  5. Hans says:

If he was to be purchased by Real Madrid and then loaned back to Racing, in my opinion, it would be both better for Canales and Racing as they refused Madrid and take the gamble themselves. Canales will surely develope. Racing can sell him for a much higher price in stead of getting 6 m. euro now.

  6. Dolce says:

There was an auction between several teams but seems that RM wins the race by offering least amount of money both for Racing and player himself. Unfuckingbelievable. City offered two millions a season, RM only one million for Canales. How on earth they got him so easily?

  7. barcayute says:

sachi or some1 tell me who is ander herrera n club age n position etc

  8. harshawardhan says:

we dont need him anyways.. we have so many youngsters more talented than him..

  9. barca96 says:

the only reason he is so famous now i think is because he gets playing time and he shines.
that's why i wish we could loan thiago, jds, fontas, gai and muniesa.
they deserve some playing time in la liga.
it's really not helping them by playing in b team

  10. laurensBarca says:

He is great, but i thought MADrid had signed him, hmm goal.com crap[
