Xavi is Spain’s 2010 Best Athlete of Year

FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez i Creus was yesterday honoured with Spain’s Best Athlete of the Year 2010 award, in recognition of his contribution towards the Catalan club’s trophy-laden 2008-09 season.

Running last season’s World and European champions midfield engine in their six-cup conquest, the 30-years-old was instrumental in providing the assists – directly and indirectly – that created the majority of goals in that campaign, and he is still going strong with his contribution this season.

Xavi, who could not attend the award presentation ceremony held at the Palacio Real de Madrid, was represented by his parents who accepted the Premios Príncipe de Asturias award – also known as Don Filipe de Borbon award – in a ceremony presided by His Royal Highness Prince Felipe of Asturias, heir apparent to the Spanish throne himself.

This is the Spanish international’s 18th individual award in a very fulfilling footballing career. The list of recognitions he had received so far are:

Xavi is just getting better each year, age don't mean a thing to him. 4-6 more years of midfield dominance from xavi.

This is the best news EVAH! He is just so humble and sincere, and "Aww" at the parents coming to recieve the award on his behalf. I am keeping my fingers crossed for Xavi to display the same form for Spain in South Africa.

  7. Marc4barca says:

lol i just might be but who knows, i have seen players play at 36 before and played well. xavi doesn't necessarily rely on speed so his game won't drop too much.

    • chazan says:

But he does heavily rely on condition and that might be the reason why he won't play so much if he plays when he's 35 or 36 in Barca colors. How do you think he gets unmarked all the time to receive a ball, by moving all the time. He is very skillful in doing this. One of his best attributes besides his vision and passing skills.

  8. Varun says:

Zaneti is 3 years younger than Guardiola, and he's still rocking. Diff players but still.

  9. rasagna says:

I am very happy for him, he deserves it !!
