Xavi extends contract until 2016

Xavi extends contract until 2016

With the Spanish international players enjoying a free day before they fly to South Africa on Thursday, June 10, FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez (30) made good use of his day by signing a contract extension until the year 2016.

The extension includes some conditional factors, based on his playing time in future seasons. At age 30, it is also almost a guarantee that he will end his career where he began it: with FC Barcelona.

Here is what the official FC Barcelona website had to say:

Xavi Hernandez and Club president Joan Laporta put their signatures to the new clauses in the deal, which link additional seasons to matches played, at lunchtime on Wednesday. Xavi has now committed the rest of his top-flight career to the Club. The salary and release clauses remain the same.

The conditions that will be applied to the contract extension are clear. If Xavi plays at least 50% of the games in the last two seasons of his current deal (2012/13 and 2013/14), he will automatically win a further year – 2014/15.

The same formula and the same conditions will be repeated a year later. If Xavi plays at least half of the matches in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, he will be automatically renewed until 30th June 2016. At that moment he will be 36 and will have spent the previous 25 years at the Club – he joined the youth academy when he was 11.

  10. John says:

A bit unnecessary, we could have waited until 2012 to give him an extension.

Laporta wants his legacy, kind of a big screw you to the next administration though. At least it's Xavi, but how will Puyi feel about it?

  11. laurensBarca says:

John relax, puyol knows he is getting older and will soon say bye to Barca, he is not offended at all. Good contract but the duration, hmm

With those 50% clauses I think Xavi should be hoping we don't sign Cesc!

Also, with Cesc's contract expiring in 2015, it won't be easy / cheap to sign him until the summer of 2014 (last chance other than January 2015) for Arsenal to sell him pre-Bosman free transfer. So if Xavi can stay healthy and perform at his peak level till 2014 or even 2015 then we can buy Cesc then and only if we really need them, hopefully JDS and Thiago are already pushing Xavi and Iniesta for starting spots by then.

A class act on and off the field. My favorite player not because he's one of the best (if not the best) in the World, but because he still values family and team. In modern day sports, there is no one better – unless your name is Iniesta :)

  18. xaviniesta says:

this is as good as giving him a lifetime contract. he'll prolly retire when his contract with barcelona ends, he'll be 36 by then. i'd love to see him coach the youth squad some day, just like pep!

  19. Cule_999 says:

@ xaviniesta With you on that one. After all he was a Pep understudy and might be a very successful coach if he chooses to go in that direction.

  20. Messi says:
