What about the pearls of our academy?

What about the pearls of our academy?

The June 30 is a key date that will define the future of five of the gems of Barca’s famed academy, as it is the day their contracts with Barca will end. As of today, it is difficult to know what lies in the future of Jonathan dos Santos, Gai Assulin, Thiago Alcantara, Victor Vazquez and Marc Bartra.

It seems almost ironic that at a club which has based the majority of its success in its great youth academy, there are five players who have not yet renewed their contract. And these are not just any five players, but five of the most highly rated promises made in the La Masia and those, if nurtured carefully, could all be future stars at the Camp Nou in the not too distant future.

While the club led by Joan Laporta is negotiating with them, the main difficulty that exists is the inability of the club to give them minutes with the first team. This season all of the above players except Victor Vazquez had minutes with the first team at some point and would likely see their role increased next season, Guardiola though can not guarantee them any fixed place in the first team.

The reason, although entirely understandable, is not enough to convince few of the above players to renew their contracts, as they believe that by leaving Barca, they can improve both the sporting as well as the economical aspect of their careers.

That matter of minutes and prominence could be achieved if the reserves manage to get promoted to the Second Division, which would allow them to continue progressing, as they will be playing at a more higher level.

These are the cases one by one:

Jonathan dos Santos:

Jonathan dos Santos (19), the Mexican international midfielder has already left for the World Cup with the ‘tricolor’ without deciding his future at Barca. Jonathan has spent months negotiating his renewal with the club, but there is no agreement yet, although the contract offered by the club mostly convinces his representative, there are still a few minor aspects to be considered before the contract is signed.

Thiago Alcantara:

Hispano-Brazilian, Thiago Alcantara’s (19) continuity is the most advanced of the five players, the contract terms have all been agreed upon but it is yet to be tied down permanently. It is expected he will sign them very soon.

Although his father, Mazinho, suggested earlier this year that the club had promised him a place in the first team, the fact is that Thiago will continue training with the first team but will likely still be playing with the reserves next season and will only play with the first team when required.

Gai Assulin:

The young Israeli Gai Assulin (19) has not had much continuity with Luis Enrique’s Barca Atletic this season, as he was mostly used as a substitute for the majority of the season. Recent interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Arsenal could lead him to leave the club.

Guardiola has him in mind for the future, but believes that he is still young to take the definitive step to the first team. However, English clubs are keenly following his developments, and his agent Pini Zahavi, the same agent that made Giovani dos Santos leave Barca, could take him away from the Camp Nou.

Marc Bartra:

Marc Bartra (19) is another of the ‘pearls’ whose contract ends this June, and although his continuity at the club has been under negotiation for months now and eventhough it is assumed he will remain, there is still no agreement in regard to the duration of his contract and the allowances the young centre half would receive. Bartra wants to stay and will probably agree, but Real Madrid have been showing huge interest in him and a surprise may be in the offing.

Victor Vazquez:

The Catalan midfielders continuity is the most complicated of all, it seems almost certain that he will not remain with the reserves next season. His fate could be with another club in the First division, although a promotion of Barça Atletic could change the situation.

    hope none of them leaves

  2. EmmyWorld Classico says:

I think they all deserve to stay, They should try and renew all their contract. Maybe we can Loan Victor and Gai out, or even sell with the tag to buy back when we need. But for Santos,Batra and Thiago, i think they should keep training with the senior squad. it wont be far enough for then to take over from their master Xavi. They can learn alont from them.

    • Sachin says:

Whats the point in keeping Thiago and Jonathan when we are buying Cesc?? I say let them leave.

      • Anonymous_69 says:

        Not both of them!

      • blah, blah, blah says:

F…k Cesc, Thiago soon will be better and for free…

      • Anthony says:

        STFU WHO R U

      • Maxmaxmaz says:

@ sachin, the guy spoke the truth but put in bad words i guess. when buying fab we will have the replacement for xavi that we need, so our mid field would be in good shape and therefor we wont be needing the youngsters in HURRY, dont get me wrong we need them but so soon, But here is the problem they are all about 19 years old, xavi got minimum 3 more years and fab and iniesta are available so these kids have to think of their own future.
The only way to stay is if they got the skills and the confident that they will sooner or later be promoted to first team. Just like xavi, he almost left barca few times because the bench was packed and you dont want to be at the age of 22 or 23 and not noticed yet., I honestly hope they all stay but shit happens sometimes

if we dont get cesc. and i belive get cesc or not keep them we go deep in competions our players not machines the way we play take alot from us

  3. emmy world classico says:

It would be great to sell out all our loan out players, but not K9. He will be a great striker for us in future.

Gai is a star in the making. Of all the talent above, I think he has the most potential. He has very good technique, is extremely fast and can be back up for Messi on the wing. Thiago and Dos Santos are also of very good quality. Does anyone know what is happening with Botia? Is he coming back from loan? Does he have a future. He has had an excellent season.

  6. hamad_ali says:

if i had to choose one of these pearls . i want thiago the most .
who knows . one of those pearls could turnout to be a diamond ( like a certain messi )

  7. wtf says:

bartra and thiago are the main ones.

  8. gogogo barca! says:

i say: keep JDS, Gai and Bartra. So we keep a defender, a midfielder and an attacker.

  9. Sachin says:

Screw all of them, go for the 'fabulous Fab'.

  10. Marc4barca says:

I thought bartra renewed already or was than montayo?

thiago and jds aren't going anywhere, victor vasquez and gai assulin won't be a big a loss as everyone thinks cause pedro and messi are still very much young and then there is jeffren and bojan. basically gai and victor are destined to leave. if cesc joins this summer it just means that thiago and jds will have to wait till xavi retires. by the time that happens they will be like 22-23.

  11. Barcafan says:

This is making me really upset…

Concentrate more on keeping Yaya and renewing the contracts of the youth squad instead of getting Cesc for such a ridiculous amount… Again it would be great to see Cesc in Barca cause he is one of my favourite midfielders but for the ridiculous amount Arsenal is asking NO WAY!!! Cesc should stay in Arsenal for at least two more seasons…

As for the youth squad renew their contracts especially Thiago, Bartra and Gai (cause these are my favourite players of the 5 above haha)… But of course if all 5 renew the better…

  12. El Kun says:

I don't get why we would pay €45 million for Cesc, when we have the new Xavi or Iniesta (in potential) in our own academy…
Imagine if we let these players go after this season. In a few years, we'll be looking for a successor for Iniesta and we notice a boy called Thiago playing incredibily well. Will we once again pay an outrageous price to get our own youth product back? I say, let Cesc stay at Arsenal and promote Thiago and Dos Santos as subs for Xavi and Iniesta!

I don't know about the others. Gai has been a 'potential star' for several years now, but shows no real improvement, mainly due to injuries I guess (and hope)… Bartra could become the back-up for Dani Alves, since he played more than decent in that Liga game. Isn't Vazquez a bit too 'old' to make it into the first team?

  13. barcayute says:

yes please keep them all please barca pep tiki new president la porta also pls

  14. Barcafan says:

Imagine how awesome it would be to one day see the squad full of youth players history would be made… Although to be honest cant really see this hapenning cause every top team needs players who has experience from elsewhere especially the physical aspect… and not many of the youth players seem to be able to provide that necessary physical aspect

  15. bosnian_barca_fan says:

keep muniesa thiago and gai assulin
they're the best in our academy
but i wouldn't mind if we keep all of them

  16. El Messiah says:

Thiago is gonna stay. Rest assured.
He has a goal to his name. That means a lot to him.

As to dos Santos, I would say "most probably".
Should Fabregas return, JDS would see himself below Fabregas, Busquets and Thiago in the pecking order … even after a couple of years.
So … an element of doubt.

Gai Assulin … I am afraid he will leave.
I hope we offer him a senior contract with the promise of loaning him out this season. Also, with Ibra and Villa aging, the prospects of being a regular in the senior squad soon should appeal to Gai.

Victor Vazquez … is a more complicated situation.
Before being plagued by injury, he had his introduction to First Division football.
So … perhaps, offering to loan him to one of the top-division clubs for a season should interest him.
Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if he prefers to avail one of his other options.

Marc Bartra … Bartra stays. Period.
Puyol, Milito, Abidal, Marquez are all nearing their retirements.
    Caceres isn't coming back.
So, unless bartra is assured first team football in one of the other clubs of Europe rightaway – which seems unlikely – he is staying.

  17. Beh. says:

Why dont they loan those guys out?
I mean, Gai could be good for lets say.. Atl Bilbao, Thiago could go to Valencia to loan as part of David Silva deal (if there is going to be one…) and so on…
Better to loan them out so that they can play than loosing them.

and then if they turn out to be good Barca will come down to the Fabregas-case… They would have to pay damn much to get them back.

  18. barcayute says:

why all that hpye about gai tell me i heard he is not a starter others ahead of him heard he plays lw a dribbler pace like messi is he left footed or right footed tell me about him pease i know he from israel

  19. SJP says:

looks like gai's agent filling another kids head with unrealistic dreams, gai should phone gio dos santos and ask how it worked out going for the money. if they want to stay then sign. if they dont value the club and care more about getting money at some other club then they are not barca material anyway. for me thiago is a must, then batra, then gai, then JDS, then victor vasquez, but if we mess things up by buying the worlds most expensive substitute then i wouldnt blame any of them for leaving as the cantera is obvioiusly less important than galacticos

  20. ShaneMessi10 says:

sometimes I think guardiola can do better giving these guys playing time in games where we are leading by a comfortable margin!

  21. Anonymous_69 says:

Some people have to realize there is no way that all our youth players can make it. Yes, we should keep JDS, Gai, and especially Thiago, but Barcelona can't restrain themselves from buying young players. Cesc is a great player, and I doubt JDS will ever be as good as him. Same goes for Sergi Roberto. Thiago is very talented, and I hope he makes it. Gai seems unlikely now, with Pedro ahead of him, and with the coach not even playing him much.

My favourites to make it are Thiago, Dalmau, Rochina (my fav youth player), and maybe Deulofeu.

    • Mido_cule says:

agreed 100% anony 69.Not all of our youth are going to make it here,in the next few season we will see many cases of Cesc, also I am not sure whether JDS,Roberto,Thiago will reach the level of Cesc but I dont think we need him.

  22. Anthony says:

WHAT RU SERIOUS SELL THIAGO AN JDS U R F**KING ILL R SOMETHING

  23. Mido_cule says:

1-Thiago:He should be our piority,he has all the talent in the world,he can play in the midfield or even on the wings,I hope we can give him a 5 year contract and Give him some minutes with the first team.
2-Gai:He has a great talent but I dont think he will make it here,he rarely plays with the Atletic team and I think thats because of physical problems,We can try to renew his contract but I dont think that its going to happen
3-Vazquez:He was considered our best academy player oneday but until now he hasnt proved this,Injures ruined his career and I think we should let him leave.
4-Bartra:a great defender and he can play as a RB and as a RCB so I say keep him but for some reasons I think I may consider a Bartra-Sarabia swap.
5-JDS:I can see this guy reaching an outstanding level.Give him a long term contract and then loan him.One of the players I think who will reach the top level.
6-Cesc:if we sign him(which is nearly impossilble)JDS and Thiago should be loaned,if not(as predicted)I say loan JDS to another La Liga team while promote Thiago.

  24. chris says:

Please guys don't compare Cesc with Thiago for now. Barça needs the Cesc quality and experience. This guys will be renewed in a short time.

  25. Christian says:

Thiago and Gai are the most promising imo, their renewal should be a priority.

    • Pedro says:

What has Gai done in the last 2 years, worth mentioning? He barely plays for Barca B team!! I said 1 year ago, we should sell Gai for 5–10 million, while he's worth something, because clearly he has no talent to be playing in a side like Barca. On the other hand, likes of Thiago, Dos Santos and Bartra are immensively talented and should be rewarded with a new contract, ASAP!

  26. Andrés says:

Bartra's contract ends at 2011. JDS and Thiago renewal is almost certain. Assulin will renew if Barça Atlètic promotes to Secon Division; if doesn't, he will probably leave.

  27. kamikaze kontiki says:

The question being posed is not whether we should keep them but HOW we can, if all of them want fist team football.

Pretty difficult if you ask me. And Guardiola doesn't seem convinced about Thiago or Dos Santos coz he had plenty of opportunities to give them more playing time this season. I can only forsee Crosas type loan spells for them.

Besides, the obsession with bringing back Cesc isn't doing them any good. That deal which is Laporta's obsession will set them back 5 years.

  28. kamikaze kontiki says:

I am pretty sure Jeffren will get loaned out or sold next season.

  29. Sachin says:

You're not getting my point mate, what I meant was once we get Cesc, with Iniesta and Xavi already there how exactly do you think will you give them minutes??

If you send them on loan and bring them back after 1 or 2 years they will still definitely not have a guranteed place as Im pretty sure Xavi will still be running high. So do you really think they'll be waiting forever going on loan or sitting on the Barca bench another 3 or 4 years to get their chance?? The simple answer is NO. They are both players with great pojections and a lot of bid clubs will be waiting in offing for them. Its really ridiculous how cules want both Cesc to come and Thiago and JDS to remain, which although sounds good on paper, but practically its impossible because they have a life too, they have a dream to make it big too and they can't keep waiting for a chance at Barca that nobody knows if it will even come or not.

My whole point was you cannot have both Cesc and keep Thiago and JDS. You can only choose anyone of them. And it would be interesting to see what cules will choose if it comes down to that.

  30. victor vasquez-I doubt hes going to stay hes not even a fix starter for the youth and is too old for promotion,thiago/s.roberto ahead of him.
jds-ok he got called up to the mexican team so what?if thiago was mexican he be starting for them in the world cup/and if fabregas comes hes defenitely gone!
thiago-regardless if fabregas comes he still has a future with the club, hes the best midfielder the club has produced recently/hes style of play is above hes years and im surprised guardiola didnt use him this season(except for like 2 appearences 1 goal/the same amount iniesta scored all season)
g.assulin-this season thought he was going to be the player hes was expected to be at 19 and the way things are going for him hes most likely to be…pedro, bojan, messi, jefftren are there and rochina and gerard d.are improving.
bartra-hes talented but if he leaves its not the end of the world/barcelona have botia,muniesa,fontas,gomez,campadal..and many more to shine soon/but if hes has the right attitude he should fight and be patience to make it to the first team, hes capable of playing 2 position and still has a chance for promotion.

  32. chazan says:

Gai will most likely leave, the only way I see him staying is if Jeffren leaves as Gai could be the back up to Messi and the last in the pecking order to the other offensive positions, just like Jeffren.

JDS and Thiago will stay definitely. I think Barca learned from the Cesc case to not let them go. I also believe that ONE of them will most likely be promoted IF Cesc doesn't come.

Victor Vasquez will unfortunately leave. I believe he just had BAD LUCK as to his injury. Maybe on a buy back option to a Primera Division team.

Barta will stay, he could very well be promoted as well IF Barca does not manage to get a back up to Dani Alves and/or there isn't another defender with better qualities in the Cantera to be able to play back up to Alves.

  33. Carolus says:

Great article, been waiting for something like this!

I wish we could have delt with this far earlier, new contract and loand out the players wanting first team football. Now it is to late and we will probably lose some future stars for free.
Bad work, but I still hope they will stay!

  34. culefromoz says:

Surely we do not need to sign Cesc just now – let us keep the young pearls from La Masia. And sign Cesc later. Gai Assulin may already be lost to us, and we must keep Batra. Can somebody again explain why we signed Chyggy?

    • MiKi says:

Bcz he is young and he wiil devolop into great defender just need time

    • ShaneMessi10 says:

He performed very well with Shakhtar I remember he was rock solid in the games against Barca!

    • El Messiah says:

Do not write off Chyggy as yet!
      or Henrique
      or Keirrison

Caceres – IMHO – is probably too rash to play in Barca colours.
I would have preferred if we had targeted Garay instead – who, currently, is rotting on the Blancos bench.

Botia – on the other hand – seemed the more likelier of our loan-out defenders to integrate into our first-team … but it wasn't to be. I hear he wishes to make his loan move permanent.
