WC ‘Blaugrana’ Report: Spain vs. Portugal

WC ‘Blaugrana’ Report: Spain vs. Portugal

With the same starting line-up from the last game against Chile, Spain went on to play their first game of the knock-out round against Portugal. Blaugrana players Pedro and Valdes started on the bench. At this stage, Spain knew they could not play the same way they had in the group stages, for there was no other way but to win the game in order to qualify for the quarter-finals. Portugal, until the game against Spain, had the best defense in the World Cup, with no goals conceded. Once again the Spanish team was put to test as to whether they might qualify for the quarter-finals!

Read some brief notes about the match after the jump, and add your own thoughts on the game.

Final Result: Spain 1-0 Portugal

The Spanish side, unlike the first three games, appeared as a strong team from the very beginning of the game. The players had the confidence, the harmony, and the possession of the ball and were able to dominate the game and impose their style on Portugal. Their style was that of Barcelona; the defenders were the first to start the offense by opening up the game on both flanks while the midfield, including Xavi and Busquets, provided beautiful passes for the forwards including Iniesta and Villa. The first half was completely dominated by the Spanish team except for some dangerous chances on goal by the Portuguese players.

During the second half, the La Roja players took the initiative as well. They had the possession and were close to scoring from chances created by Ramos, Villa and Iniesta. The substitution of Torres for Llorente was crucial for the Spanish team’s offense. Five minutes later, Barcelona’s player David Villa, scored Spain’s first and only goal of the night. The goal was scored after a wonderful play by the Spaniards; short, fast passes in between Portugal’s defense were played until Xavi, with the eye of the maestro, slightly touched the ball to Villa, who put the ball into the net in his second attempt after Portugal’s goalie saved his first attempt. Llorente and Villa’s chances on goal never ceased while Eduardo, Portugal’s goalkeeper, kept on saving his net.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s night was not a lucky one as he had to face Barcelona’s central defenders, Pique and Puyol, with whom he has bad memories. The Blaugrana defenders seemed as though they knew how to stop the Portuguese captain and he was put into hibernation during the second half! Pedro on the other hand, was given only a couple of minutes to play at the end of the game in place of David Villa.

Spain’s next game, in the quarter-final, will be this coming Saturday against Paraguay. Even though they were in good shape in the game against Portugal, they have not yet reached their full potential, and mistakes at this level mean the team will be going back home. Will La Roja be able to beat Paraguay? Could Llorente or Pedro be in the starting line-up instead of Torres? Could the Spanish team be more efficient with a different combination of midfield players?  Share your thoughts below in the comments section.

imho torres was weak, he couldnt get shots at the goal and he couldnt hold the ball and then deliver it to someone else
also iniesta on rw isnt that good as he was constantly wandering around in mf (which was actually a good thing to do) but rw was left empty, sometimes torres drifted out to rw, then xavi tried to get into the penalty area, but that didnt have a great effect.
and sometimes ramos came up to take the space on the rw, but he didnt do that often..
villa is playing a good lw, but he is missing in the middle when torres is forced to strive out to rw
i dont know, when spain wants to play with 4 midfielder, they should put villa on a more offensive position..
the way the played tonight (villa coming in from the left, no one on the right) left them with virtuale no width in the game and it was easy for them to close the space down for spain..
paraguay should pose no threat, but in the semifinals, either germany or much more likely argentina could cause them real problems.. i even think argentina will be more easy to beat for spain, although i consider them as the better side of those two

    • TLL says:

Yeah, having no presence on the right is a problem. Though Ramos has been playing as Alves does in a wingish manner. Maybe if Xabi floated out right that would help.

I think Germany will be harder (for Spain) to beat than Argentina because Argentina's defense is not terrific.

There was too much space between the back 4 and the midfield. I keep telling people busquetts has only impressed me offensively, defensively i've seen nothing that warrants him as a DM. He's EASILY beaten with a drop of the shoulder.

    • subs says:

Nonsense. Portugal didn't give any threat at all and Busquets had the highest number of balls recovered on the field. You are just parroting your preconceived ideas about Busquets.

    • Jenny says:

i agree with scrappy on this one.I see he good at offensively.Xabi i think is good defensively. The tackle he use when chille player went attacking.
I really like busquetts on offensive along with xavi.He position himself good enough for xavi and other player to pass to him.

I think it would be best for Alonso to be benched, but he is a terrific player, and he would be a big loss! But I definitely want to see Iniesta in the midfield with someone else on the RW.

    • Dustin says:

I think Busi should be dropped in favor of moving Alonso back to his holding DM position. Then move Iniesta to the center and put Silva in as RW. I'd also like to see Cesc get some time; today I felt like Xavi should've subbed for Fabregas.

      • brandao mourinho says:

youre an idiot dude…behind villa and sergio ramos busquets had the best game of anyone on the field)

busi tackled the ball well in the midfield very smartly all game. and kept the ball moving..i can only think of one instance where he lost possesion (it did lead to a shot on goal for portugal though

    • Scrappy1 says:

Anonymous are you serious???? Alonso is the only tackling midfielder that spain has, the only player that will put in a hard nose tackle. Its your lover boy busquetts who should be benched

      • Joker says:

Yeah!!! Depending on slow as a tortoise Alonso and a not 100% fit Iniesta for midfield defending is a really good idea… not!

      • TLL says:

Busquets played DM really well, again. I think that Xabi needs to move out of the center–maybe up a bit–and let Xavi control things. When that happened in the second half the team looked great.

I've been as critical as you of the uncritical Busquets-love here on the blog. But he's been great during the World Cup.

      • hamad_ali says:

busquets won back position more than i can remember . and the crack head alonso kept on losing it .

      • Anonymous_69 says:

That's insane. Alonso is by no means capable of playing as the only DM. He helps out in defense, but not nearly enough to be a DM. Spain used his as the only DM during the Confederations Cup, and Spain were horrible. If you honestly think Alonso should be playing as the only DM, you're crazy.

'Kudos to Espana' and "The Barca Boyz" This was a tense, hard fought, take no Prisoners, win possession, control the tempo and midfield at all cost ,kind of a game and they came up trumps. The boys to a man played their socks off and the build up and touches between the three stooges that led to the goal was something to behold, considering there were six defenders within touching distance of each other and the way Andres and Xavi threaded the needle and the back heeled final ball to Villa was sublime and had the Barca imprint all over it…Captain Courages and Pique were solid.

Congrats 'El Guaje' on getting number 4 .May you Win the Golden Boot and score many more for Spain and Barca in the coming days and months.
Well Done!! Onwards to Glory ! Paraguay here we come!

    Viva Espana! Visca Barca!

    http://www.tribalfootball.com/agent-admits-german....

hes been a cule since he was 12..

man forget cesc, and silva, and mata
ozil is perfect.. without the hassle of the signing fee and all the drama
arsenal can have cesc, ozil has outshined just about every midfielder besides xavi iniesta, and the other german whos name i cant pronounce or spell in this whole world cup.. IMO
and if not him, we should get that argentinan midfielder,, his number is like 22, or 23, but he came on as a sub against greece and mexico and his passing and reading of the game was amazing.. if you guys have a name please dont hessitate to tell me =D

but david villa will only be a minor addition to our squad.. ;)
soo glad we have him BEFORE the world cup
just imagine how much villa is worth now.. 70 mill for sure

Did you guys notice that the goal had barca written all over it. It was pass from Iniesta to xavi, then a back heel from xavi to Villa, and then Villa scores …. watching that was puuuure enjoyment

    • am glad u saw it too…god i can't wait for the new season to start….i hope Rossel gives up his weird fantasies of having Torres on our team…and keep as much as the current squad as possible

      • Barca_4ever says:

totally agree with Max n jamaican_cule… :) the goal was breath taking and hope Rosell doesn't bring in Torres.. Ibra is better !!

      • brandao mourinho says:

i was watching the game with my boy who isnt really a fan of the game….and it told him the last 3 players to touch the ball before the goal all play at barca…the i yelled "i cant wait for the season to start"

        villa will be a beast….

how do u guys feel about coentrao?? he had a great world cup at left wing back

    • doris86pl says:

agree, I enjoyed it! Hope in next season we will see more goals like that one

  8. Pedro says:

TORRES FLOPPED YET AGAIN. THAT'S 1,2,3,4 games in a row and not counting qualifiers..

  9. TLL says:

It was great to see Xavi back in the groove, controlling the midfield in the second half. Xabi Alonso needs to move forward and give him space.

Busquets was great, again. If he continues to play like this, he'll deserve to start next season.

Not a coincidence that as soon as Torres left Spain scored. Llorente should start.

  10. barcafan6000 says:

Germany has the team but without the ball which Spain will posses they will not be able to do anything.

Argentina with la pulga will hurt Spain as he knows virtually all the players and will have no problem flying past capdevilla to score casillas as usual

  11. Nordin says:

Ozil is the man that impressed me. Forget about Cesk, Wenger will never let him go, and Ozil is better.

Ozil can play on the left wing, he can be used to rotate Xavi and Iniesta, giving them rest and replacing one of them when they are injured.

    Villa
    Ozil Messi
    Iniesta Xavi
    Busi

    Abi Puyol Pique Alvez

    • brandao mourinho says:

i cant disagree with you there…if cesc cant come then ozil would be best….hes had a damn good world cup being the creative force in a potent german team

  12. doris86pl says:

What a game! Very good beggining for Spain, only in first 5-7 minutes there were two or three very quick actions near Portugal goal. I really like the way in which Pique and Puyol stopped game near our goal, but once again I must underline that Busquets played absolutely fantastic! Sergio stoped Cristiano few times and made quick passes to team mates. Once again he was key player in this WC. I also like that Xavi played in his style, pure joy to watch it. Iniesta also played well, our precious boy :) El Guaje was hero of the match again, I must admit that whole action was excelent. I really enjoyed cooperation between Xavi, Iniesta and Villa. I'm also glad that Pedro play a while.
I'm proud of our Barca boys!
offtopic: What do you think about Nike jinx?
Ribery, Rooney, Ronaldo, Drogba, Canavaro, Ronaldinho are out of WC ;) Spanish guys who play in this commercial deal with bad luck (Iniesta was injured, Cesc don't play a lot, Pique was bleeding 2 times) but they overcome troubles.

  13. Karla says:

PEDRO INSTEAD OF TORRES ! i like Fernando very much, but he hasn't shined as he used to since the start of the World Cup… so…. Give Pedrito a chance! Llorente is also very good, i was surprised, i didn't know him too well….
WAY TO GO, SPAIN and BARCA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
