WC ‘Blaugrana’ Report of the World Cup 2010 Final: Spain vs. Netherlands

WC ‘Blaugrana’ Report of the World Cup 2010 Final: Spain vs. Netherlands

It was to be a historical World Cup final as both teams, Netherlands or Spain, were going to hold the trophy for the first time in either country’s histories; a game between the creators of the total-football mentality and the current masters of it, thus football fans around the world had great expectations of witnessing a beautiful football game of great passes, chances and goals! It was hard to predict a winner of the game with 50% probability of  either team winning as Netherlands sent off Brazil in the quarter-finals while Spain sent off Germany in the semi-finals on their way to the final game. The Spanish team’s starting lineup was the same as in the game against Germany with seven Barcelona players starting while Valdes started on the bench. Great hopes and expectations were put in Villa and Pedro to score the winning goals for Spain during the ninety minutes or maybe in extra-time.

Read some brief notes about the match after the jump, and add your own thoughts on the game.

Final Result: Spain 1-0 Netherlands!

Paul the octopus was right once again about the identity of the winner of the game. Spain has made history as they are the first team in Spain’s history to ever reach the final and win the World Cup! However, the expectations of watching an amazing final between two teams who play beautiful football were betrayed by the style of play that the Netherlands players had shown throughout the whole 120 minutes! Bert van Marwijk, Netherlands coach, had two simple tasks to do. Make sure his players were physically fit to play a full game without tiring and tell his players to destroy their opponents! The outcome was a game with nine yellow cards and a red card for the Dutch player Heitinga, a new record for a World Cup final! From the beginning of the game, the Dutch players harshly tackled the Spanish players as they tried to keep their usual ball possession and create chances on the opponents’ goal. It was obvious that they thought of nothing but defense and how to find a way to stop the best team in keeping ball possession from playing their style of football. The Dutch player Nigel de Jong deserved a red card in the 28th minute when he ‘front-kicked’ Xabi Alonso, forgetting what type of sport he was playing on the field! La Roja accepted the challenge as they suffered in silence trying their best to play their game: keeping the ball while avoiding any dangerous injuries from inconsiderate tackles from the Dutch players.

The second half’s story was the same as that of the first half. With only two serious chances on Spain’s goal missed by Arjen Robben which Casillas heroically saved, Spain dominated the game with a continuous flood of chances on the Netherland’s goal but without any luck. Vicente del Bosque, Spain’s coach, decided it was better to play with five midfielders instead of four, so he substituted Pedro for Jesus Navas in the 60th minute; later in the game he substituted Xabi Alonso for Cesc Fabregas in the 87th minute. The game continued to be goalless with not much of a football show except for the chances La Roja players afforded without being crushed by any tackle!

It was obviously not one of the Villa’s best games of the World Cup, and he was substituted for Fernando Torres in the 106th minute. Eleven minutes later, with four minutes away from the end of the extra-time, Iniesta, Blaugrana’s pint-sized midfield icon, was finally able to score Spain’s first and only goal which turned out to be the winning goal of the game. Iniesta received the assist from Fabregas and determinedly scored the goal, providing deja vu of his goal against Chelsea in the 2009 Champions League semi-finals! He was the scoring hero as Casillas was the saving hero for Spain.

La Roja showed that beautiful football will always come out winning no matter how badly the opposing team decided to play! They played as a team, building up their chances with the goalkeeper to the defense, the midfield, and then the strikers. It is a system with which Barcelona play and Spain, with all the talents they have, knew it was the best way to winning both the Euro 2008 and the World Cup 2010!

If Cruyff was to be questioned about the Dutch team’s play in the game against Spain, he would surely say that this is the reason why he stayed at Barcelona all these years instead of supporting Dutch teams! It shows how powerful the skills with which Barcelona players and the Spanish team as a whole played with, that not even those who created the total-football mentality could stop them – not even with the non-football like style of playing! It wasn’t defense, it was an aggressive and a harsh style of playing that could have cost the Dutch more than a 110th minute red card!

Congratulations to Spain, to Blaugrana players, to total-football, to the beautiful game, to all the Spanish team’s fans and to you totalBarca readers! Share your thoughts and comments below.

Iniesta's goal would have been meaningless if it weren't for Casillas's ridiculous saves.

    • Joker says:

      Your point is?

      • DoesntMatter says:

        Rather obvious.

        • friedchicken says:

If iniesta goal didnt happen, they wouldnt have won the trophy in extra time. if it werent for the goalie in ned, espana would scored more. what's ur point again?
yeah, casillas had a great game. so did iniesta.

    • Marc4barca says:

agree but plz lets not get into any of this right now. it's celebration time and all spanish fans have to be on the same page.

    • Zebra says:

and casillas' save would have been meaningless if andres didn't score and spain lost on penalties

    • wwb says:

I don't find anything ridiculous with them. Stekelenburg was just as good in the other end. I have never felt completely safe with Casillas this tournament, that was not the case in the past, where I felt he was very secure.

      • TLL says:

Agreed. He was shaky. But he came up big when it mattered.

        • Casillas also deserves to be up there as the Man of the match along with Iniesta.. this we shud agree.. both were absolute monsters along with the rest of the Spanish team….

  3. Iniesta_8 says:

The nightmare of Chelsea did it again !!!!!!

    Inieeestaaaa !!!!!!!!

  4. Joker says:

Iniesta was average until Van Bommel pissed him off. Then he started being the best player on the pitch.

LOL @ shitty Van Bommel :D

    • TLL says:

I don't think he was the best player on the pitch. Xavi was. Xavi was error free, again. He's just not of this planet. But Iniesta was superb, superb.

  5. KAYR says:

this is bad for arsenal… I bet, while lifting the cup, Xavi said to Cesc: Come to barca and you'll lift much more!!! and you could see the joy of blaugranas and cesc combining on the pitch, BRILLIANT!
now i confirm that cesc really has he blaugrana DNA

  6. doris86pl says:

I can't find words to describe how I feel right now, I'm over the moon, dream came true. In the morning the first thing to do is to check news site to make sure it's not a dream. Andres WinIesta:D:D:D::D:D

  7. VarunM says:

There wasn't a single Spanish player in the squad who didn't play a part in this, starting from 10 qualification matches to todays match.
They are the best side in the world and they deserved it, they have the best players and still the team work was exceptional.
    So proud.
My only worry is, i hope other club teams now don't start playing the DeJong kung-Fu way to stop us, coz the dutch did mess up our tempo a lot.

  8. jerryfcb says:

after watching this game, i realized perfectly why van bommel was sold after one season…he is ZERO skill whatsoever and he is one of the dirtiest players you'll find in football today…
with that said, well done to spain…not only to the barca boys but to the entire spanish team…
casillas' save, ini's goal…my goodness it was the most heart gripping final i ever watched…
well done spain! now for euro 2012!

    • ali says:

he wasnt sold by barca willingly…for ur info he was the one who sent a transfer request..at barca he never played as Dm but more as an attacking midfielder..iniesta used to play DM at that time..having said that van bommel had an awesome worldcup..every team needs a dirty player these days

      • bhouse says:

An awesome world cup? Van Bommel was a disgrace and had more fouls than take-aways in most of the games. He got away with more fouls than any other player.

      • wtf says:

no. you are wrong. bommel is dirty and dirty does not belong in football. if u like dirty players then u should not be on this site.

        • no thanks.. Barca doesn't need a player like that on our team.. we play the beautiful game the most beautiful way and thats more than enuf… we dont want van bommel or de jong or melo or any of the other midfield thugs at Barca..

          • Jenny says:

well it already happen..like it or not van bommel is one of the player in barca 06 CL.And starter when xavi got injured that season.

          • ya i know that jenny.. and i honestly dint like him when he was in our team… and now it just makes me feel better than he left us before we kicked the shit outta him..

      • jerryfcb says:

really ali? he wasn't sold willingly? go back and check thru van bommel's stats for that season…
he was used sparingly by rijkaard…yes he started the CL final but he contributed very little to the team throughout the season which was unexpected due to the hype behind his transfer…
at the end of the season rijkaard informed him it was best that he leaves because he wasn't gonna get first team football and van bommel knew that so he left barca on very amicable terms…the deal was even more smoothe because barca played bayern in the gamper trophy and it was after the game the deal was brokered….get your facts straight next time buddy…
and also, iniesta was NEVER a defensive midfielder good grief…back then barca's defensive midfielder was edmilson or thiago motta…if "every team needs a dirty player these days" then they're sure as hell not going to win the world cup cause spain proved otherwise…

  9. Unreal2 says:

its quite ironic that a team, which is better known for its attack than defense, scored just 8, least by any winner, and is the only team not to have conceded a goal in the knockout stage in the world cup…
but nonetheless… they won the cup, and that is what counts!

off topic (answer to your previous comment), as far as Andres' wines are concerned I only found that "The winery will make 700,000 bottles of red, white and rose wine a year and put the Bodega Iniesta brand on the labels, Iniesta said. Bodega means winery in Spanish. Production will start in September and in the first year some wine will be exported to the U.K. and Germany, where it could sell for as much as 40 euros a bottle at a restaurant, he added." p.s. i am not on dope, seriously though :)

  18. TLL says:

Awful, awful football by the Netherlands. Dirty. I don't know if they deserved each of the yellows they got, though they got away with some rubbish that wasn't called.

Xavi was amazing–he's totally unflappable in midfield.

Did Iniesta get the Golden Ball?

    Viva Espana!!

    • Samwise says:

forlan got the golden ball, mueller the golden boot, shame, though they desrved it

    • ali says:

xavi wasnt amazing at all..iniesta was 5x better than him

      • wtf says:

        no. you are wrong again.

      • TLL says:

Xavi managed, all game, to stand in the field with flying Dutch assassins all around him trying to break his legs (or chest!) and never miss a pass, never have a bad touch.

He's the best midfielder I've ever seen and probably ever will see.

        • Anonymous_69 says:

I agree. There are other great midfielders in the world, but Xavi just has a different style. He will definitely go down as one of the best players ever. All the players in this Spanish team will go down as the best generation of Spanish players ever, and players like Casillas, Ramos, Puyol, Pique, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, and even Busquets, Alonso, Capdevila and Torres, will go down as legends, and this team will always be remembered. In 20 years, we will fondly remember this team and the wonderful players they had, and the amazing football that they displayed. It will be remembered along the likes of all the other legendary national teams that won the WC. We have to celebrate this team, as it might be a long time be we see another Spanish team as good as this one – I'm not only talking player's qualities, but also the way the players got past their differences and became best friends.

  22. HieiFCB says:

I counted how many times Xavi lost the ball…
Holy shit… 120minutes, and 4 times ball lost.
    VISCA EL MAESTROO!!!

    • TLL says:

I guess I missed those. I didn't see him lose it once. Are you counting incomplete passes as lost balls?

      Xavi is amazing.

      • HieiFCB says:

yeah imcompleted passes, or when he didnt control the ball. bad first touch.
but all 4 of the times he lost the ball, it was just a too hard pass for him or tht the other player he passed too didnt come for the ball.
But he is damn awesum on the field, especially if you pay extra attention to him!

  23. VarunM says:

Iker kissing Sara, live tv love it, nice moment.
I like Casillas, atleast he got to win something, 'coz we all know what his chances are at madrid are.

  24. Anonymous_69 says:

Iniesta definitely has the finishing capabilities. In the summer, if Pep trains Iniesta's decision making in a dangerous position, we could have ourselves a goal-scoring midfielder! lol

    • Mido says:

I beleive that he scored 2 goals in this tournament because of his free role,at Barca he plays as an attacking midfielder but at Spain has the freedom to play on the wings and to drop to midfield to convert it to a diamond one with Don at its top.

    • TLL says:

He doesn't naturally shoot. At least once a game during the World Cup I found myself yelling "shoot!" at the television. He and Xavi would prefer a brilliant assist to a goal, I think.

      • there was one other chance where he tried to keep going closer to the goalie before shooting it n van bronkhorst tapped it away… i was yelling "pls iniesta, shoooooooot :) "

    • Joker says:

      What a shite site

    • VarunM says:

What in the hell was that, it felt like DeJong just kunf-fu kicked me with that article, lol
      That author needs mental checkup.

    • Jenny says:

I don't recommend this website.Totally not following journalism etiquette..
      I'm just saying…

    • mgd24 says:

load of rubbish – to be honest, both sides were let off a bit, but it stopped the match turning into a
8 v 9 joke, which was a good thing. With so many tackles flying in all over the place, and in a world cup final, it must have been one of the most difficult games to referee ever. And there was nothing wrong with the spain goal.

  25. JwBarca says:

Listen i used to love iniesta. However his blatant dive against van der Wiel and the red card he deserved for pushing van Bommel (though understandable…) have truly lowered my opinion of him. Spain are deserved winners of the cup though, holland could have won it to the refferee was just against them…

    • VarunM says:

The way dutch were intent on playing i was cheering him to go down in fact.
Dutch will think twice or 10 times now b4 they decide to employ similar tactics.
I had to be cruel for dutch and it was and i love it :)

      Illusionesta strikes :)

    • john says:

Wait, you're saying Iniesta should have gotten a red card reacting to a play where von Bommel purposely stepped on his feet and tried to injure him? If von Bommel had been sent off like he was supposed to be, Iniesta wouldn't have had to push him.

I thought von Bommel is a tough guy, you're crying that 130lb Iniesta pushed von Bommel in the arm to stand up for himself???

      • JwBarca says:

What i'm saying is that cheating is cheating and both sides did tonight. van Bommel didn't do the right thing but neither did Andres.

    • TLL says:

I was disappointed with the diving, too. But what would you do with a referee who allowed dangerous play to persist as Webb did? I'd probably start diving and asking for cards, too.

The sad thing is that everyone now thinks that Iniesta is a natural diver, just as they think Busquets is (though he didn't dive in the WC until tonight, iirc).

  28. leo says:

i recommend that xavi and puyol retire after today from international football and concentrate on barca from now on..they have won everything there is with the national team..scholes, giggs, nesta, totti have all improvd and elongated their careers after they gave up international football..

  29. desy says:

the game really sucked and i felt pissed knowing that i could go some where fun with my girlfriend and i choose to watch this game this game did not flow wats so ever the most i saw in a pass sequence was 10 passes proud Spain and barca fan tho Iniesta man love (no homo) and spain a day to cherish and Netherlands neverlas peace hope they (spain) dont get too drunk

  30. Cule_999 says:

Hey, Van bommel ! That is Iniesta's way of saying, "Fcuk You " for all the dirty tackles….. Spain 1 – Netherlands 0
Have a very "Merry Christmas", this year !

    • Robert says:

Iniesta should be sent of for the filthy attack he has committed.
the fouls made by the dutch team was more obvious, but the spanish players seemed to get away with anything…

  31. blaugranas says:

anyone who know, please tell me what is the meaning of words on iniesta shirt..?

  32. wtf says:

well i think we finally can say that busquet is awesome. he intelligently knew how robben would move and stopped him most of the time.

    • IvanCule says:

He's definitely shown to be a better player in my opinion too.

    • TLL says:

Busquets has played brilliantly. But someone was missing some assignments such that those through balls to Robben went through. I'll watch the game again and see who it was.

Can't wait to see SB get even better this fall. And Pedro, too.

just GOD knows how I am feeling now ….so strange …..

  43. Sjoerd says:

Haha, what a biased text you have made here my friend (noticing the barca sign everywhere). Not only do you only talk about what the Dutch did wrong (Spain, yes Spain, also made some horrible tackles and played a foul game) but you also presume that the Dutch their goal was to obliterate their opponents by defending all the time. Furthermore your text isn't only biased, but you also leave out some valuable information about the referee who had clearly missed many key happenings and caused the making of the first goal. What also struck me was that you only congratulate the Spanish players. Didn't the Dutch reach the finals as well and are you a fascist Spaniard with your big friend the dictator? I'm just saying. I can say anything here just like your biased mind does.
