According to Catalan based news paper Sport, in a ceremony held on Wedensday in Madrid, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta indicated that the agreement between the club and the UNICEF should continue until the year 2011. Marta Segu, CEO of the foundation of UNICEF said “the commitment of the club [FC Barcelona] to the vulnerable children has been extraordinary.”
Laporta referred to the organization as “the best organization for children in the world and having their logo on Barca’s shirt is like winning the Champions League trophy.”
Both president of UNICEF in Spain, Consuelo Crespo, and the director of the foundation’s office in Europe, Philip O’Brian, appreciated the work done by FC Barcelona and their permanent commitment for the alliance. O’Brian also added that “the relationship between the two entities has grown over the years and allowed the ‘Mes que un club’ to be recognized throughout the world.”
It is worth mentioning that the agreement between UNICEF and FC Barcelona was established prior to the 2006/2007 season. The deal includes at least 1.5 million Euros to go to the UNICEF foundation that supports vulnerable children, mainly those affected by HIV/AIDS, and in turn Barcelona wears the UNICEF logo on their shirt. The deal was agreed upon in 2006 and initially established for a 5 year period.
