Rate the Referee: Zaragoza – Barcelona

Match referee Miguel Angel Pérez Lasa showed only five yellow cards in this afternoon’s game at La Romareda stadium in Zaragoza, but his performance has still come under scrutiny. Only two minutes into the second half, he brandished a straight red card to Zaragoza midfielder Leonardo Ponzio for a foul on Dani Alves which left Zaragoza with only 10 men for the reminder of the match. Zaragoza coach José Aurelio Gay noted angrily after the game that Pérez Lasa had “destroyed” his team.

What did you all make of Pérez Lasa’s performance? Was Ponzio’s red card deserved? Should Pérez Lasa have done more to clamp down late in the match as tempers were flaring? As usual, sound off in the comments. And if you want to appear extra knowledgeable, check out our preview of Pérez Lasa from last season here.

He did alright, the zaragoza coach should be mad at his own player for getting send off… a elbow is automatic red these days.

9 for me . and it would have been a 10 if it wasn't for the yellow on pique ( he was portecting his face and wasn't looking at the ball ) and the penalty for Busi .

  7. Nik says:

That was never a red card. You'd have to be very ignorant to even argue that it was. Alves made sure that he sold that to the ref…

If you don't believe me, whack yourself on the ear and find out how much it actually hurts, then compare it to how Alves reacted.

I'm a huge Barca fan but to say that it was a justified sending off is absurd. Alves clearly dived and milked it for all it was worth.

I can’t agree. First of all, regardless of how Alves “sold it,” a hit to the head/face is a red card, by the letter of the law. It was blatantly intentional.

Second, there’s something you’re not taking into account: Alves has had his ears pinned back, if you recall. What you may not be aware of is that this procedure causes them to be EXTREMELY sensitive (essentially, they cut a wedge of cartilage out and push the ears back). Alves may overact a lot, but in this instance, I’m fairly certain it hurt every bit as much as he made it look.

I agree. And there is no way Pique should've goten a card for when the ball hit his arm, he clearly turned around to block the ball with his back but unluckily it hit his arm and he was like 1-2 meters away so it was unintentional, nothing he could do about it

That guy never should have raised his hands, PERIOD!

  10. Eric says:

Alves made a meal out of it, no question about that, but "whacking someone on the ear" is a red card offense, no matter how hard and no matter how much the "whacked one" exaggerates.

But I do wish Alves would cut out that crap.

  11. Kriyx says:

Good for you for missing the entire point of this post.

  12. RenWoXing says:

I thought the ref was mediocre at best. He spends most of the game making a lot of bad no calls including when Busquets was fouled in area and then gives Pique an undeserved yellow.

  13. Maestro says:

2 scores: 1 fore competense 1 fore biassed against our team.
