Pique out of Catalunya squad with injury

As Catalan paper Sport reports, FC Barcelona Gerard Pique will not play as part of Johan Cruyff’s Catalunya team when they face Honduras on Wednesday. Pique has been dropped at the last minute, owing to an injury.

The Catalan Federation has received a statement from the Medical Department of FC Barcelona which stated: “Player Gerard Pique has a siatic muscle injury [pseudociática por contractura del piramidal derecho], flaring up in the back of the right leg, so he is bound to be unable to compete at 100%. These episodes have been repeated several times this season, so it is advised that he rest and receive treatment.”

After receiving the statement from team doctor Ricard Pruna, the federation discharged the player from the squad.

Pique is the second player to be dropped from the Catalan team, after Malaga refused to release Francesc Arnau. While Arnau has been replaced by Kiko Castile, who plays for Cartagena on loan from Espanyol, it seems Pique’s absence will be too last minute to find a replacement defender for the squad.
