Messi: “I owe Barcelona for life”

Messi: “I owe Barcelona for life”

FC Barcelona superstar forward Lionel Messi has a very special reason to reject the potential of being the most expensive player in footballing history. It’s not because he is waiting for the most lucrative offer, but more because he is in ‘debt’ – to be more specific, indebted for life to the club that went out of their way to give him the life that he presently has; a life’s dream fulfilled to be a professional footballer. And the best one in the world nonetheless.

Destined to be one of the millions of kids growing-up whose talent were over-looked because of life’s unfortunate circumstances, even more so in his case, Messi was one of the luckiest few. Until he was rescued by FC Barcelona, a club thousands of miles and a continent away, there was no future for him as a footballer, let alone a professional player, but lady luck smiled on him, and the rest as they say is history.

Diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency illness as a young boy in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, doctors never expected him to grow taller than 5ft – no more than 4ft 7in to be precise – far too small for the game.

His father’s medical insurance was only able to cover his treatment for two years, and at €600 per month, it was beyond Newell’s Old Boys football club’s finances to bear considering there was no guarantee of his potential, even though he had shown his prodigious talent since the age of 5. His career seemed to be over even before it started.

“My father had to take three jobs, but the medical bills in Argentina were very expensive and we still couldn’t afford them, and no team at home was prepared to take a chance and pay them,” the Argentine star said, harking back to those dark days for his family.

“When I was at Newell’s Old Boys my hormone condition meant I was never going to make it as a professional.”

That is where the Catalunya club came in.

“Barcelona offered to pay them and moved me and my family to Spain.”

They spent four years worth of treatment on him, starting from when he was 12-years-old; and what an investment!

Now, standing at 5ft 7in, life looks rosy for Messi and his family. And of course, the windfall for FC Barcelona, and it should not come as a surprise that the shy but warm 22-year-old has such a tight bond with his surrogate parents.

“I will always be grateful to Frank Rijkaard because he gave me a chance in the first team when I was just 17,” said Messi.

“At that point I know there were a lot of people telling him that I was never going to be big enough. If he was proved wrong there would have been a lot of people telling him he was wrong, so it’s a big thank-you to him for giving me the chance he did.

“It’s under Pep Guardiola I have played my best football though.”

Posed with the question of whether he will be taking on new challenges to prove he can make it in leagues other than just Spain, like his hero and national team coach, Diego Maradona, possibly to the self-style tough English Premier League, the player said: “Will I play in the Premier League one day? I have said that I want to be at Barcelona for life. I will be here for as long as they want me. I owe Barcelona more than for giving me a chance – I owe them for changing my life.

“How could I ever leave a club who done that for me, and why would I ever want to leave a club who play football like this?”

Indeed, the family atmosphere that coach Guardiola has nurtured is the secret behind last year’s Champions League triumph, Messi believes.

“You go into the dressing room and everybody is smiling,” he said.

“The man whose business is doing well will go in with a smile on his face as will his staff because they will also be reaping the rewards.

“That’s what it’s like playing in this Barcelona team. We are all friends. We all enjoy playing for the manager and we stay humble enough to realise how lucky we are to be playing for this club.”

Pure class, through and through. A certain diva (cough ronaldo cough) should learn from the best.
Barca should never let Messi go, even when he gets old and doesn't performe because of all Messi has given the club and the fans.

    • Esteban says:

noooooooooo. if crynaldo learns how to be humble and work for the team like messi does he would be unstoppable. Messi is the best because he doesnt play for himself. he plays for 90,000 other people in that stadium.

    • Flavio says:

Cough Cough that diva Ronaldos got more goals den messi cough cough puke maybe messi should learn from CR7……

  2. mahmoud says:

the only thing i can say is that messi is class.

    • Mamoon says:

Class….Dude i could write a Dictionary on him with the amount of words i have for such a person.

  3. Rakka says:

dammmmmmit i miss frank rijkaard ;((

    • Barcafan_pd says:

I miss rijkaard too.. but am glad that our team is in the best possible hands… :)

      • koko=barca says:

WHAT??? You miss Rijkaard??? He was the worst tactician in the world and totally lost control over the players…Of course I don't miss him

        • Bobo says:

i'm sorry man but if he's the worst we won't cl win as he did.

          • Rakka says:

WTH??! His only problem was that He didn't take any control on the players esp. the party boy Ronaldinho. He's been too melt to Dinho and Deco. And when Pep was in charge, Pep didn't hesitate to exclude both guys from the squad.

        • Marc4barca says:

          Worst?

this huy took us from a 6 year drought and won us two la liga and a CL. he deserves respect.

        • gray says:

Hey, u're so ungrateful, Rijkaard put barca back on the football map, believe it or not,he started the revolution. Even pep and laporta have said so.

          Thanks Frank!!!

          • exactly, rijkard is the real man that made Barca's place where it is now by winning the CL and back to back spanish champions.
But he was too soft with players, which is why he lost control of ronaldinho and deco and etoo and hence he had to leave. guardiola is a much more strict and discplined coach. and he is imprving in the tactical skills.

        • Barca fan says:

          Worst tactician? Come on… seriously?
Rijkaard is actually a great tactician. He may not be a great "man manager" because he is too nice a guy. But no one can doubt his tactical acumen.
I recall this very website has posted an interview with Xavi talking about Rijkaard where he very honestly said what was great about Rijkaard and what was not. Xavi mentioned that he was very good tactics and loved studying the game… but he had to go cause he couldn't handle the big egos of Ronaldinho, Eto and Deco and their infighting. He is too nice to a guy.
Also.. .if i may remind you… both Messi and Iniesta got their big breaks under Rijkaard. give him credit for that atleast. I am not comparing Rijkaard with Pep… but Rijkaard is great on his own right and there is no need to trash him.

        • Shakawkaw says:

maaan!!! if it wasn't for Rijkaard in the first place, barcelona wud'nt be what it is right now..

      • xaviniesta says:

nobody as in NOBODY can trash Frank Rijkaard around these parts! *spanks koko-barca*

        • koko=barca says:

I stand behind what I said…It seems like you don't remember Rijkaard so good. Yes we won CL and LaLiga…We had a great team and he never changed anything those 3-4 years…Even after we start losing, he was ignorant and soon we started going down…I am grateful for what he did…Believe me, I was one of Rijkaard biggest supporters..But he lost it and that cost us tittles. What hurts me is that those days we still were the best team in Spain
@Xaviniesta you proved once again you are immature

          • HieiFCB says:

so you are saying when we are best in Spain you will support Barca?
in this case Rijkard, but when he cant control the team… you disrespects him and call him WORST tactician.
You have to support the team in bad times too, or are you trying to be a glory hunter?

          • koko=barca says:

Dude…I never said I stopped supporting Barca…Stop taking things out of context…I have been here long enough to see a lot of glory hunters comming and going… Do not sell me that glory hunters story…Rijkaard is one thing, Barca is another…Why not criticize??? Does Cruyff criticize??? In public??? Is that not supporting the team…Come on

          • Rakka says:

You are talking as if He's nothing at your first post. Actually Rijkaard had been demonstrating Barca's philosophy and It's worked tbh. Surely He never changes it, does We in Pep's era? No! The only problem as you said it also that He lost control over his players and It is now what Pep's protect, that's why Pep regularly contacts its players and fines who is not discipline, something that we missed in Rijk's era. How can u claim that Rijkaad was a bad tactician?? He beat Chelsea under so-called the master tactician Jose Mourinho at the time. But the question is How can you deliver your tactic to the player if you don't really posses your players at all??

          • xaviniesta says:

chill dude, and grow a sense of humor. believe me, i know what rijkaard did and did not do so save your lectures for someone else :) and anyways there are enough discerning and grateful fans around here, you go crabbing now.

  7. sachin says:

What a player and what a person! If anyone deserves to be the best footballer ever, its Messi. I sincerely hope he never leaves us :)

  8. Messias says:

its so good to see someone like messi, who is so down to earth and genuinely a good person. unlike some wh*re fucking, drug abusing, booze popping, arrogant shit. you deserve all teh praise messi may god always be with you.

  16. Marc4barca says:

i like messi and the way he carries himself but he doesn't have to tie himself to barcelona.. if something happens and he leaves we would still love you, well me at least unless it's to real madrid. all i hope for is you to have healthy career and not end up like how torres is now.

I am a very honest and role model fan, I love Barcelona and their is no doubt that I wont die been Barcelona, I am an African though but that doesn't change the spirit and the emotions I posses towards the team Barcelona, apart from their attitude both off and on the beach, it's extra-ordinary, Barcelona is a team blessed with so much talented players, but the builders can build in vain without God, God is behind Barcelona and my prayer for both the supporters, players, coaching crews and the Managers God will continue to shower his blessing and strength on them they shall never know failure, as long as Jesus Christ didn't fail in his quest to die for our sins Barcelona will not fail in any area of the game, the issue with Messi ,leaving or staying Barcelona is the player choice, no one can dictate for him but from history since he joined Barcelona team, Messi has been an humble player and with grateful heart, he is not an ingrate, you need to be a footballer mostly from this region of Africa (Nigeria) you will understand what is meant to be a player without future and lot of energy but no exit for success rather entering for failure. Messi will continue to reign God himself has said it, humble yourself before me and I lift you up and high. Messi future is in God's hand……….. stop rumour what you need is to pray for the whole team and mostly the young player. When it is your time you will be best among the rest and you will outshine many people celebrate the king so that one day when you are crown others will celebrate you. Messi understands the lanaguage of the game "Love, humbleness, meekness, faith, endurance, hard-working and focus"

  22. We owe you our Allegiance……. May God Bless every move you make…

  23. Dude says:

So hypothetically speaking it cost €600/month for his hormone shots and his treatment lasted 4 years, Barca only had to pay €28,800 for the best player in the world. lol :)
