Mascherano wanted Barca switch last summer

Liverpool defensive midfielder and Argentina international Javier Mascherano (25) wanted to leave “The Reds” for the latest La Liga champions FC Barcelona, according to live4liverpool.com, a fan blog of the Merseyside team.

“The situation with Barcelona really affected me. It was a shame it didn’t happen as it was the city I wanted to live in. There were many discussions and problems during that month and a half. They were difficult times for me. One day I was off to Barcelona, the next I wasn’t. And Liverpool said I was non-transferable. Psychologically, it affected me as I couldn’t think in Liverpool and I was focused on other stuff and not on my work, my training and playing. Also, we were having problems with Argentina as our qualification to the World Cup was in danger. There was a lot of complicated stuff at that time.”

The main reason behind the switch to Barcelona was the failure of Mascherano’s family in adapting to the English language and lifestyle in Liverpool.

The player himself described everything by saying : “I don’t do much stuff in my free time, that’s the truth. I could go to London with my wife to do some shopping but I have already been to London 1,000 times and if I want to go to another city, I would have to take a plane. What kills me about living in Liverpool is that there are only two Argentinians here with me, Emiliano Insua and Maxi Rodriguez. Insua and I live in a private neighbourhood. He lives in one tower and I live in the other. There are 15 metres between us and we used to look at each other through the window. Sometimes Zabaleta comes from Manchester but there is no way Carlos Tevez comes here. If I want to see him, I have to go to his place and knock on his door. He doesn’t like to leave his home. So during the winter, during those four or five months, I have to stay at home all day with my family. I have no problem living in Liverpool, but I think my wife and daughters deserve to enjoy every day to the full and live their lives – but they have to be at home all day. My wife doesn’t speak a word of English, so she depends 100% on me. I live here with them. That’s my world, that’s my life.”

The negotiations over a new deal between the club and the player has been postponed and scheduled for a date after the World Cup. A possible transfer of the Argentine will most likely depend from the future of Barcelona’s current DM Yaya Toure. Should Mascherano sign for Barcelona, the deal will have to be struck before the World Cup as the Barcelona management is fully aware that the price tags of players usually rise after a major tournament.

    Yaya>>>>Mascherano

    • nik says:

I agree, but Masch is a good player we have to admit that….

However i would not replace Yaya for anyone…and i definetely would not want Yaya to be playing in the opposite side

Yaya is Better ;) … We want Yaya :) not other :) )))

    Irony : ON

    We sold eto'o last summer
    We'll sell Touré this summer
Maybe sell Alves next summer !
And every single good player until there's only Busquets in the squad !!!

Guardiola is a f***ing fool for leaving Touré on the bench !
He's an excellent coach, but still a huge crazy fool !

    Visca CAMPEONES

    • FCB_fR3aK says:

You wanna know the real irony?

You called Guardiola "a fucking fool" and then said Visca CAMPEONES a sentence later.

Haha stupid fuckin poser. Go back to your hole dipshit.

      • warcelona says:

Well you have to admit that some of the things he has done were wrong, sellin etoo has been his biggest mistake imo, then of course buying chiggy and ibar when we had villa ready to arrive for 2 million more then what was aggreed.however that might of been laporta been pig headed there instead of pep.i wouldnt start busquets in any match ahead of yaya and it will be a massive mistake selling him.BUT I WOULDNT PICK ANY OTHER MANAGER OVER PEP HES BEEN SIMPLEY FANTASTIC FOR US but just let the president do the buying this summer

        • gray says:

Finally someone is saying sometime, Guardiola is no god and ha definetely made a mistake selling eto, and he's about to make the same mistake with yaya. Maybe he'll stop selling good players when the entire barca squad is spanish or la masia graduates

        • Eto'o says:

Eto'o fanboy. I'm glad we sold Eto'o, he was the only member of the team, acting like a monkey, when we have class acts in Messi, Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Pique, Abidal, Keita, Puyol etc. Why would we play Eto'o as much money as Messi. Messi is the best, eto'o was among the best. It's not like Etoo was earning peanuts. Laporta and Guardiola said time in time again, we want Eto'o to say, but no way will be give him a contract as high as Messi, as Messi is 10 times the player Eto'o is or anyone else for that matter. Eto'o greediness and stupidity, led to him leaving Barca. For Inter, he's doing a good job, but do note, he was 10 goals in Seria A and one, 1 Champions League goal. Good for Eto'o, excellent choice by Guardiola and I hope Yaya stays with us!

          • AJMcLoving says:

Eto'o has more goals than Zlatan. You know what's worse than selling Eto'o? Trading him and also cash for Ibra.

You can believe all these media stories about his contract dispute. He could have left Barça to play with Rivaldo if he wanted money. In truth Samuel was disposed due to his fiery relationship with the press. Pep thinks "Stoichkov was enough" and even though Eto'o was a really nice person and all, he basically got the sack.

          • ev60 says:

Well Pelé has more goals than Eto'o, I don't see barca negotiating with him. The fact is that Ibra has scored more goals this season than Eto'o and bunch of assists too. It was right decision to sell Eto'o, but wrong to buy Ibra. A successful football club must bring new blood in the team every year to be competitive. Barca got a good lesson with Ibra. In the future they won't buy that type of striker unless they change the formation……doubt that.

      • xxnas says:

        U ***in poser !
Who the hell u think u are to talk to me that way ! Mind your own f*** business dammit !
And who asked for u're answer anyway!
Guess it's my opinion, regarding a person who's actually Guardiola !
And i don't say ****in fool cuz i hate him, but bcuz he did a lot of mistakes, but he's still great !

Next time learn to shut up when nobody's asking for ur opinion !

    • Coke says:

I pretty much agree with what you say.

How for the love of god can he start BUSQUETS and KEITA over Yaya?
      HOW?!
WHY does he like Keita so much? He and Busi are not half the player yaya is. Not even Close.
Yaya is a CB, CM, AM and a DM and he is damn good at everything.

FU Pep if you sell him.
Aside from that, <3 Pep :>

      • AJMcLoving says:

Keita is a VERY important piece of the Blaugrana puzzle. How can you not see that? Yaya doesn't do even half of what Keita does for the team. Yaya's more direct.

  6. SwedishBarca says:

We dont need this red card waiting to happen
    YAYA> mascherano

  11. _Diego_ says:

    yaya stay…please!

  12. Otter says:

DO NOT WANT. Nasty little thug, discipline problem who racks up cards even with the liberal refs in the EPL, no better than Busquets and a long way worse than Yaya.

  13. Mido_cule says:

I think we may see Mascherano in a Barca shirt in the next season,Yaya is ataying I am sure of this but I think we will sign Javier so as to play Yaya in a more offensive role as the transfer of Cesc is very coplicated.Pep is a big fan and I think we will see Javier as our first signing for next season and I beleive it will be a good addition although I dont like him.

    • Scrappy1 says:

What?? You do realize that if mash comes we will have 4 DM. yes yaya can play AM but at the expense that biskitts plays DM, i am not comfortable with. What we need is a LB, a winger, keep hleb, give bojan the nodd, the return of the beast (yaya) to the starting 11 and we'll be fine. I can see that pep doesnt want any of rijkaards fingerprints left on this team, it was rijkaards main men (yaya and eto'o) that were instrumental in us lifting the CL in rome.

      • Mido_cule says:

Using Yaya in a more attacking role adds a lot to the team and then we can have 6 midfielders for rotation.I am not a big fan of Mascherano but the move would be so smart.Beleive me we will end up signing Mata and Mascerano this summer.I think like the last summer all of the light was on the Felipe Luis and David Villa transfer and then we ended up signing Zlatan and Maxwell and this year all of the ppl talk about about Cesc and Villa and I am sure we wont get anyone from thm and I think we will sign Mata and Mascerano.

        • Scrappy1 says:

LOL @ mata. Our first priority should be a LB. mata is not what we need.

          • Mido_cule says:

I am not talking about waht our team need,I am talking about my expected transfers and they are Mata,Mascerano but about the team needs if it was up to me I would go for Bastos as he is a great player and can play as LW and RW and LB in any formation,if not Di Maria or Silva or Krasic would be great.

          • Scrappy1 says:

Bastos @ LB is no better than marcelo @ LB. THere is a reason bastos doesnt play @ LB.

  14. No Mascherano. If we didnt have Yaya, sure. But we do and I do hope we keep Yaya. He's a monster! But whatever Pep decides, as long as he brings us lucky fans beautiful football and a trophy or 6.

  15. Barça über alles says:

Mascherano > Yaya as a DM.

  16. luimac says:

why the hell do everyone get all bitchy when people critizice Guardiola. He fucked up with Chiggry, Eto'o might also be considered a bit of a blunder and he messed up big time letting Busquets play over Toure.

    • Barça über alles says:

Why the hell everyone ignores the shit Toure and his shithead manager Shelouk who is "like a father to Yaya" said and done and blame Pep all the time is beyond me. The number of Yaya fanboys is even bigger than the number of EPL fanboys.
I say sell this guy for 20 millions so that Shelouk can earn his money and buy Mascherano who is a much better defender.

      • Scrappy1 says:

i see u've never watched mascherano play before, its obvious from you non-educated reasoning

        • Barça über alles says:

I 've watched yaya since his olympiacos days. Even in the poor greek league he stood out because of his strength and technique, not because of his defensive abilities, discipline and work-rate which were always a suspect. Masch is a world class holding midfielder and ball winner.

      • messiiiiiiiiii says:

        ARE YOU INSANE?!?!?!

        • messiiiiiiiiii says:

I have an idea. Let's sell Toure, buy Mascherano, and then bench Mascherano in favor of Busquets….

Yaya proved again yesterday what a great player he is. The best DM in the world who can play as a central defender and as an attacking midfielder?! Out of this world.

      • Cule3 says:

Mascherano Sux even biskitts is way better than him

    • Scrappy1 says:

agree, too many guardiola disciples on this board, everything he dooes his holy and shouldnt be critisized… lol. Sad thing is, politics in spain will always overshadow the football

      • FCB_fR3aK says:

Yea Guardiola should be sacked cause he sucks.. I hope the new board gets rid off him and hires a manager who'l make the perfect choices when it comes to team selections. I think Mark Hughes would be perfect. NOT.

Dude, Scrappy .. you have really outdone yourself this time. I mean seriously , everyone here knows what a whiny lil bitch you are. Week in week out, you run your potty mouth here and cry, criticize every little thing. But, you criticize Guardiola NOW ? He just won a record breaking La Liga. And you have the stones to say "He doesnt know what he is doing" … Your a clown my friend. The simple fact is that your just unable to comprehend his decisions. Sure there have been a few mistakes, everyone makes em, but just because you cant understand something doesnt make Guardiola wrong. In the end, he is a champion and you are a loser.

And btw, politics in football makes things all the more interesting. Thats what makes the league so intense. Without politics, El Clasico would feel like a Chelsea liverpool game = Boring.

  17. tbh for me i think current barca squad are good enough to beat any team in this world. but any addition to the squad for reinforcement is a good thing. but losing too many of our current players is not a good thing. they have been together for years and might have a good understanding. new players still need to adapt to barca playing style. even skillful players like henry and ibra still struggle to make impact in their first seasons.

  18. CristianoRonaldo says:

You fools, me and my slimy hair are way better than Toure, "Mancha"rano, and Messi combined. I can play ST, CAM, CM, DM, CB, and even GK. you all know nothing of football, stick to playing PS3 you fatties, buahahahhah.

  19. yaya wants to stay. everybody knows it. he needs to play regulary because he´s the best in his position and he deserves it. i hope he will stay in barcelona for many years. by the way, he should fire seluk because he sucks.

  20. fcbarcatenerife says:

His wife should consider taking an English class.

    • brandao mourinho says:

exactly what i was thinking….wtf is her problem??? masch has been in liverpool for years….it only take a couple of months to grasp a new language…probably even short if ur totally immersed…

  21. Jubei says:

Against Vallaloid Toure once again proved why he is superior to Mascherano and Co. He can actually pla the ball and spray passes all over the pitch if he wanted to – he is no Xavi and never will be but he is a damn good passer of the ball.

    • press says:

Yaya certainly did not prove that he is a DM against Valladolid (keep in mind that it is a relegation team in La Liga though!). If he proved anything, he proved that he is a much better player in a more attacking role.

  22. kariz says:

Let be honest, Pep is terrible in recognizing good players. Look at his dream players. Zlatan, Cheg and selling of hardworking Eto. Now he wants Maschenaro, who is a terrible player in compare to Yaya. Yaya is all round player like Pique. Yaya can play as Forward, Midfielder, Winger and central defender and may be also like goal-keeper;). I know he has Eto's character, getting angry and some time selfish, but we have respect that, because those things makes the squad dynamic and stuff. So plz for god sake do not sell anymore good playersssss like our beloved Yaya. Yaya doesn't have a good personality and character, but he is a damn good player in those positions he plays!!!!

    • Anthony says:

LOL! 21 goals and 16 assists, which helped us become La Liga champions in one of the best league performances of all time in process breaking all sorts of records. Yaya will stay!

    • @KiketonPR says:

Terrible is hardly the word…sure he puts Busquets over Yaya, but thanks to him we have Pedro and Bojan on the senior team. I am pretty sure (my opinion) that another coach that did not manage the youth team like Guardiola did could have put Pedro over Henry and Bojan (well, a little late) over Ibra. Didn't Guardiola get Dani Alves, Maxwell and Pique? Pep will make mistakes, but if he believes in Ibrahimovic and Chyggy, I'll trust him. I believe that Ibra and Chyggy can improve and make a great addition to the team but let's give them next year! They may dissapoint but we cannot say until we see it. Let's also see if Guardiola puts a youth defender and JdS and Thiago (also midfielders like Sergi Roberto and strikers). Under Pep, we will continue to see players from La Masia and see them make important contributions to the team. As for the transfers from other teams, Villa and Fabregas is MORE than Enough, anything else (well maybe a defender) is overkill and emulation to the "galactico philosophy" that madrid mistakenly puts their trust in.

"In Pep we MUST trust" B)

      • brandao mourinho says:

        i wish i could make a topic on here….

TO THE MODS….i think it would be cool we you guy made an "Ibra Expectations" topic. it would be interesting to see what kind of numbers ppl here expect out of ibra…

if you can be satisfied with 20 plus goals and 10 plus assists in the mans FIRST season what will make you all happy???

its a shame to hear everyone say "ibra sucks ibra sucks ibra sucks ibra sucks" EVERYfuc*kingDAY…

        • @KiketonPR says:

I agree on the Ibra Expectations…personally I think he did good this season. Of course, next year the expectations might get a little higher. But, what did everyone expect? 30 goals in his first season? Ibra surpassing Messi? What a bunch of spoiled fans! Eto'o is gone, I'am sorry, but he is gone. I LOVE Eto'o, but this is what we got, and we must show the outmost support for Ibra. Do some people want him to make 30 goals meanwhile saying that he sucks? His stats were great! Just give him next year. If he plays worse, sell him, I don't care. But, if everyone starts dissing him over stupid sh*t, then have the decency to stop calling yourself a Barça fan. We are the fans of the World's Greatest Team and we stick together.

  23. Blablabla37 says:

If we get Mascherano, we can't get Cesc. Toure would be moved to an attacking position, and Iniesta would play LW. 25m for Masch and play Toure as an AM, or 55m for Cesc to play as an AM? Considering that Toure adds something different than Xavi (something Cesc doesn't add), I would prefer the Masch option. Plus, Toure can play as an AM, box to box player, DM, and CB. He has also recently played all across the backline. I think we would just be a lot better with Toure as an AM rather than Cesc.

  24. barca says:

I don't support this switch, and i think it will not happen

  25. Jay says:

I know yaya might be used to make weight in a possible deal for cesc but Idk, why waste the money and have to wait for mascherano to adapt to us you know? Why not just keep yaya at all cost. He's very useful for gods sakes he's a DM, AM, and a CB. Were in the world are you gonna find a player like that? Yaya is built with the skills necessary to be a total footballer of barcelona caliber. selling such a total footballer, such a complete player as Toure is a mistake.

  26. SaeedSal says:

with yaya in our hand we don't need any player in this position
I don't like this player style

  27. brandao mourinho says:

    toure should stay…PERIOD

we can bring in masch and thats fine…he would have to setttle for bein a rotation player…which he may not mind. if i were him i'd be dying to get out of liverpool

  28. ev60 says:

You all should look this in Touré's point of view. He knows that he is one of the best DMF in the world and less experienced guy(Busi) gets a lot more minutes than he does. If I were Touré, I would also consider moving, because he has won everything with this club and probably next season would get less playing time. He won't get any younger and he wants to spend his remaining top form on the pitch 90 minutes every game.

The only reason why Pep might have left Touré out all the time, could be that Touré doesn't train as hard as Busquets does.
