For me the great thing about having Mascherano is that he provides so many options. There will be different starting formations in different situations. Masch can play in place of Busquets, with Xavi and Iniesta in the midfield and Pedro, Villa, and Messi in front. Or he can play alongside Busquets, giving Busquets more room to move forward, with Iniesta pushing up to the front line (if, say, one of our front 3 is injured). There will be days when he doesn't start; Pep may opt to go with the old Busquets/Xavi/Iniesta. Even then, though, if we're protecting a lead in the last 30 minutes of a game and the other side is pressing hard it's really nice to have a strong defensive player to come in off the bench and shore things up.

Mascherano doesn't play CB, but if injury or suspension forces us to do games without Puyol and/or Pique, having him in the midfield will be a huge advantage. Having a super active hard tackling midfielder breaking up attacks and putting pressure on makes life a whole lot easier for the CB pair. Even if he doesn't win the ball, having him breathing down their backs will force the other side to rush their passes and deny them time and space to set up… you want that on your side if you have to play without the top CB pair!

It's all about negotiation. If our guys start jumping up and down shouting "we gotta get Mascherano" the price will hit the sky… look what happened with Cesc. Instead we have guys coming out and saying we're fine with the squad we have, not really our type… but maybe if the price is right we could take a chance and do a deal.

Not good to seem too eager.

You are right, even though we only won one league title with Cruyff we beat Madrid 5-0 and also before that we won the league in 1960. It was a drought period.

Yeah, honorary president for sure. He is the philosopher that changed our team. Pep is Pep because of him.

actually Cryuff attained legendary status mainly because of his management. I love Cryuff and his style of play and what he brought on the playing field, but his time in a Barcelona jersey coincided with a dark period.. He just won one league title.. But he changed the club forever as manager..

So basically retiring the '14' would make no sense.. Im sure he would admit that personally too..
He should be given the honorary president title back though,,,
