After undergoing his medical this morning and signing a four year contract, Javier Mascherano has been presented on the Camp Nou pitch to the fans as the new number 14. As described by Barcelona’s official website, the midfielder has already experienced one of the most special moments as a new player of FC Barcelona. The Argentine has put on the blaugrana shirt, jumped onto the pitch at the Nou Camp and has had his first touches of the ball in Barcelona. A description and pictures of the event are after the jump.
This Monday has started very early for Javier Mascherano. Early in the morning, the player completed a medical examination that lasted for almost five hours. In the afternoon, the third addition of the season for Josep Guardiola’s team signed his contract with the club for the next four seasons (that includes a €90 million buy-out clause). After the traditional photo session at the offices’ shield, Mascherano was treading the turf of the stadium.
Although not initially planned, the club opened the gates of Camp Nou for the public to see Mascherano dressed in Barcelona’s kit for the first time. Thus, many people – about 2,000, approximately, turned up for the opportunity to see Mascherano arrive at Barca from the stands of the stadium.
The most anticipated moment occurred at 19:35 hours, when the new Barcelona player jumped onto the pitch amid the fans’ uproar that awaited him. While photographers captured the image of the moment, the audience never stopped encouraging Mascherano, shouting ‘El ‘Jefecito’, his nickname.
The Argentine midfielder then showed off for the crowd with a few touches of the ball – showing great skill by touches with his head – and presenting two balls to the fans, who have continued to encourage him at all times. Finally, the player left the pitch waving to the crowd as a sign of gratitude for the support and their willingness to attend his presentation.
This photo shoot at the Nou Camp has served to expose the number Javier Mascherano will wear on his back. The number chosen is ’14 ‘, the number most recently worn by Thierry Henry during his three seasons with FC Barcelona.
