Maradona: “Messi will end the Maradona and Pele polemics”

Former Barca player and current Argentina national team coach Diego Maradona has said that Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is “playing a kick-about with Jesus,” but believes the Barcelona maestro must stay mentally strong to avoid making the same mistakes which curtailed his own career.

Argentina coach Maradona also said the debate as to ‘who was the greatest footballer ever’ will only be determined when the 22 year-old hangs up his boots.

“He’s at a select level, being the best in the world and a star at Barcelona. Lio is playing kick-about with Jesus,” Maradona said as he reacted to Messi’s four-goal showing which knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League.

“There are moments when you are invaded by loneliness, but you have to be strong so you don’t end up doing things one did,” he said.

“I spoke to him a lot about this,” Maradona told a radio station in Buenos Aires.

Maradona also said when he recently visited Barcelona, he spent two hours with Messi talking about many issues.

“I told him I’d done my thing, now he has to make his career and at the end we’ll see who was the greatest of all time. But he’s on the right path. I saw that he’s mature and full of will,” Maradona said.

“How could I not be happy for Messi to win the World Cup. The Maradona and Pele polemics will end and the best thing is that Messi is Argentine.”

Maradona have a striking force of Higuain, Tevez, Messi and Milito, these 4 players have scored well over 100 goals so far in the best European leagues and CL. No other national team come close to having that amount of goalscorers. How Maradona kept his job is a true miracle as he has proven nothing to deserve it and could ruin alot of players' hopes for World Cup gloy.

Gotta make sure Lilo is a part of the WC too

Don't forget about Javier Saviola.. I believe he's still on the roster, and in the '02 WC reminded me a lot of Messi with how quickly he moved.

excuse me Pele ego is gonna end do you think messi stand a chance to win a world cup, i bet there are many teams that are more ruthless than Argentina and it is only the matter of time mardona how he will find that he is so wrong, Pele is ranked the greatest of all time do you think messi will win the world cup, i hope he will but one thing sure he is never near the players like zidane, Eric cantonna, best, eusebio, ronaldo the old one not that disco player Cristiano ronaldo, and maldani, barsei, beckenbauer, and voller, sanchez, raul, roberto baggio, and many others.

I cant see any team, other than Spain, being that ahead of Argentina. France appears weak, Italy looks lost (look at the Italian legue) so which teams are you refering to???

As to the players you are refering to, had they all been 22 years old today would you really trade Messi with one of them???

I would not trade Pique to Beckenbauer, NOR Xavi to Zidane Nor Baresi or Maldini to Puyol….In fact from the above mentioned players only Cantona (in the absence of an experienced LW) and Ronaldo (like you said the old one) could find a place in barcelona's starting eleven…

Raul and Roberto Baggio are better than Messi?????

You classify Raul and Baggi amongst the best (EVER???) in the world?????
