Litmanen saved Zlatan’s career

Sweden international and FC Barcelona player Zlatan Ibrahimovic (28) is enjoying his undisputed reputation as an excellent striker. But like any other player, Zlatan had his ups and downs during his professional career.

As a teenager Ibrahimovic was signed by AFC Ajax Amsterdam from Malmo, and his start in the Dutch Eredivision was more than difficult. In fact, it was a total failure.

I felt so much pressure to perform well and to succeed that I started to try to do too much. I wanted to dribble past 3 opponents, give the cross and then score the goal myself,” he said in an interview for worldcupblog.org.

With the guidance of Marco Van Basten, Zlatan learned to be more patient and sacrifice useless fancy tricks in order to help the team.

“And Marco van Basten spent time with me. He was the youth coach, but we did hang out together and talked. But my real saviour at Ajax, the man who saved my career, was Jari Litmanen. He was so good and committed and experienced. We had three good strikers: Machlas, Mido and myself. And Jari took you by the hand, on the field. He talked, coached, guided and basically made you better on the pitch. He allowed others to play better,” he concluded.

      funny part :D

a female journalist from Sweden (!) asks him this: “Rumor has it that you and Lionel Messi have a very bad relationship. Is it hard to play together?” The silence in the press room is palpable. Zlatan is courtious but brisk: “Here’s a reporter from Sweden who wants to be famous. When you write about Zlatan, people read it. When you also write about Messi, more people read it. Throw in a bad relationship, and it’s a hype.” The Swedish lady isn’t startled. “So how does Messi feel about all this?” Zlatan shakes his head in disbelief : “We talked about it in the dressingroom and had a laugh. We became even better mates since that rumor.”

I think that Litti owns a notorious La Liga record by getting crocked no less than 8-9 times in 1999-2000 season. He just turned 39 but still has plans to continue. At Camp Nou he was used in totally wrong role, when he finally happened to be fit, Serra Ferrer often used Enrique or a young dude called Xavi instead of him

Litmanen in his prime was simply put top of the crop. It's rather sad his career came down to terrible injuries, which prevented him from becoming even better.

It's absolutely true what Zlatan says about Jari. I bet indeed that when they had offered Jari a real chance at Barcelona, he could have become a real valuable player for Barca. At the years of the great Ajax Jari was the big man but still always that teamplayer.. For me, never another Jari Litmanen, unfortunately..
