Keita: “Adriano will adapt easily”
Seydou Keita (30), one of the few first team players already back in training, sat down with Catalan sports paper Sport to talk about both the World Cup and the upcoming season. The original interview can be found here.
Do you feel like your vacations were too short?
I had a great time. I spent the entire time in my country, with my children and visiting my family.
Was it hard for you to watch the World Cup from home?
If you’re asking if I thought about going to South Africa the answer is no. That thought didn’t even cross my mind.
But you watched some of the games on TV, right?
Yes, not all of them but I did watch some.
And who were you supporting?
I watched the African countries and Spain because a lot of my friends play on those teams. I was very happy to see Spain win because I think that is very good for Barça.
Why?
Because winning gives confidence and brings about more desire to win again. I don’t know how many Barça players there were on the Spanish team but I think around eight or nine.
That depends on whether or not we include Cesc…
With or without Cesc, that victory gives us a lot of positive energy. It’s fundamental for us. Without a doubt it’s better for them to come home champions than to come home having failed.
And with Iniesta in phenomenal shape.
He’s a national hero now and I’m very happy for him. Imagine scoring the winning goal in the World Cup Final. That makes him a hero and it’ll help us a lot. But it wasn’t just Andres that played well. Puyol, Xavi, Pique, David Villa, etc also contributed.
How was the experience of watching the World Cup from Africa?
I think Ghana had a great tournament. The Ivory Coast, the best team in Africa, had a very difficult group. Cameroon and South Africa didn’t play very well but the most important thing was for the tournament to go well on African soil and I think we accomplished that.
Explain that statement.
It was the first time that something like that had taken place in Africa and it was important for things to go well. Spain won on the field but Africa won off the field.
Barça signed Adriano, a former teammate from Sevilla. What can you tell us about him?
He’s a great player that can play in many different positions…
Like you?
No, he’s different. He’s in great shape and has better technical skills than I do.
It was difficult for you to adapt to Barça’s system. Do you think it’ll be difficult for Adriano too?
It was more difficult for me than it will be for him.
Why?
Because he plays on the flanks and that makes it easier to adapt. His role from Sevilla to Barcelona won’t vary too much. It wasn’t tough for Alves to adapt. It’s difficult to play in the midfield on a team like Barça. Knowing when to keep the ball, when to pressure, when to recover possession…it’s complicated. Adriano won’t have any problems.
You asked for another defensive midfielder the other day. Do you think it’s absolutely necessary?
It depends on Pep. Sergio [Busquets] can easily cover that position as he showed in the World Cup but if Pep wants us to play with two defensive players like we did at times last year, we’ll need someone else.
Do you know any of the 250 players that have been linked to substitute Yaya?
I personally know Abdou Traore. He plays in France and is from Mali. I know him well but I’m like everyone else in the world in that I have no idea what’s going to happen.
Is it strange for the preseason to be in Barcelona?
Not really. We’re doing the same things that we always did.
And the heat?
Right now it’s hot everywhere.
Are you ready for the tour through Asia?
I’m scared of flying but it’s part of the job.

I love having Keita in our squad. A great team player, who never moans and is ever solid on the field. I wish him a great season to come.
Seriously he has been very important for barca.
HE is one of the best sub.

"if Pep wants us to play with two defensive players like we did at times last year, we’ll need someone else."
For all of you that think we don't need a DMF… Pep likes to play with 2 (or 1.5) DMF at tough away games and that's why Keita is fundemantal… I hope you're reading this Skanjos… Just sayin!
Good point.
We need a DM that also can cover CB.
when is alves and keita going to renew their contract?
rossell got to do work…
Alves and Keitas contract expires in 2012 as both signed on a 4 year contract from Sevilla in 2008. Both had been approached before the WC to extent their contract but they decided to continue with the existing terms. So the concern remains regarding their future with Barca post 2012. But then things can change in a year, every reason to remain hopeful
Keita will finish in 2012.refer to our youth.
alves didn't renew because he wants more money…
He deserves every penny, he's asking for!
He's as important as Xavi and Messi ( Just look at how many games he play per season).
Umm no one can really be compare to messi and xavi/ i mean xavi is the brain and messi is the one who makes the difference, but i know alves brouhgt barcelona to another level and ofcourse he deserves to be amonng the highest paid players unlike ibra…
Agree until Bartra will ready.
keita is very right in pointing out the qualities needed in a Barca MF. It is also prudent to mention why we just cannot go about signing anybody as top leages do not give a lot of time to adjust and we need players who are adept at Barcas style of play quickly. Thats why Ozil although a outstanding MF isnt quite the same as Fabregs or I dare say Alcantara.
Alacantra !!! He was awesome last year in the copa del rey against sevilla.
and he is not alien to barca system, well adapted.
Future star of barca
It doesn't matter,i think pep's plans were totally wrong but he is the best manager so…
basil, i like how you pointed out that he is a future. He is not ready for the first team yet, i believe all the youth players should be slowly integrated into the team, i can't just understand how some people say we have Bartra, Oriol and co so we don't need this and that. lets be real, can Oriol play as a DM against the likes of Essien and Gerrard, playing at Barca B is far different from playing with the first team and players must be slowly integrated into the team like Pedro, Bojan and co were slowly integrated, i say buy a DM and get Cesc next season
In this way we may lose some of them i think.
if we buy a player like YA YA (DMF-CB-CMF-AMF) and no more, then we can give our youth more time
to be in first team
ADMINISTRATOR you gonna teasing me!
This is a positive buildup all of us are working on, my compliments for some of the genuine concerns being reflected here. Although the management seems to think otherwise by concentrating on CB and AMs unless guys at Sporting and Deportivo have delegated their task to gossip coloumn writers while they turn focus on what Rosell is having for dinner.
I like Khedira from Germany very much, he has shown some qualities this WC and he's young, it wouldn't cost (around 10mil.) cause his contract expires next year and he can play DM and CM, but apparently he's going to Real (to ruin his career).
He is out of our style.
haha who was khedira before the world cup?
A young average players in the german league…
and he is demanding 7 million a year…This days being a agent= easy money!
@ just a fan. you understand that foul language is not acceptable on this site right ? iam gona go ahead and delete this comment but do me a favor and cool down a little. if you face any problems with the blog just shoot us an email and we will fix it asap rather than you running your mouth, thanx
Hey ADMINISTRATOR catch this —–>> ISRAEL is a violator.
you shouldn't delete this because we are barca(with unicef brand) so we are votary of human
rights.
Viva GAZA.

Just a fan, I'm Palestinian so PERSONNALY, i think you're right. But that's just me…
Don't bring politics here, when I come here, Israelian or Palestinian, WE ARE ALL BARCELONISTAS!
This is basically the only place where I can come and NOT think about the war and all of my family living there etc…
I've always said this is why Barca is mes que un club= TO UNITE US ALL, whether we're Palestinian, Chinese or Russian!
Peace, to EVERYONE!
btw, no offence just a fan…
Hope you understand!
I'm pro-Palestinian but here is not the place to talk about this subject…
If people were really interested in human rights, people would care about other places that suffer far more than palestinians, that's for sure! I've been to places where there's neither phones or internet and people die of the most basic diseases. Palestinian areas are like heaven compared to these places.
I never said otherwise! If Gaza is like heaven, what does that make our life?
You're obviously biased and wanting to make us look like the bad guys! Do you know how it's like to live in a place where a bomb can explode and you can die in a second?
Trust me, you don't wanna know!
Dude, far more people die of traffic accidents than bombs in the Palestinian areas. That's the truth.
@ DSH,stupidly,world has society inclusive about 8,000,000,000 person &
in other hand GAZA with 1,500,000 see the difference this the truth.
how old are you man? you think like a child.
@ DSH. "Palestinian areas are like heaven " heaven for ISRAEL people not for others.
We just look at a corner.i understand you more than you imagine.
@ KAYR," that's just me " no man don't think in this way.anyone that is votary of the truth know this.KAYR we should think about our enemies at anytime if we didn't we may hurt us.they are violator so they deserve it.man they don't know how to spell "peace ".
" why Barca is mes que un club " this is the reason that i support BARCA,
i think it means BARCA is a resource to help people at all a of the world live happy,it means all of the good adjectives (inclusive truth,…)we always should murmur the facts to be not forget them. I have done my murmur JUST WITH LOUD voice.
————————" BARCA is a culture,culture of good adjectives "————————–
Viva BARCA (GAZA). enjoy from the truth. Voice of ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of IRAN.
@ Maxmaxmaz Two days ago you delete this " ISRAEL is a violator " for three times so …
if you agree you should do something in your area so …
if anyone give rights to ISRAEL he is a violator too so …
i just say the truth Barca is mes que un club so i think barca's fan should at least think about it
to help the people around the world live better.
i sympathize, but please find another forum to express your concerns. i'm in here to read about soccer and how it pertains to Barca.
@ just a fan, please dont tell me what i should or shouldnt do without knowing what i have already done or have been doing. i dont like to brag so that part iam going to keep to my self. again and again and again thats your opinion about israel. even though i agree with it ITS STILL AN OPINION. do you know where gai auslin is from? doesnt mean i was going to hate on him just cause he was from a certain place or from a specific background. can we all be civil here and talk more about sport and less about war. thank you all
@ Maxmaxmaz if he(gai auslin) give rights to leaders of israel then i hate him.
we love people(even israel's people around the world israel isn't a country it's a demoniac ism.
