No deal has emerged in new talks between current Barcelona vice-presidents Alfons Godall and Jaume Ferrer, both of whom have earlier indicated their willingness to lead the continuity project, and an agreement appears unlikely at the moment, despite efforts by other members of the board to unite the parties.

Barcelona treasurer Xavier Sala i Martin, has reportedly publicly urged Ferrer to join Godall’s group and “to stop his adventure”. On his part, Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who had earlier in the week met with Ferrer  in what was described as a “positive” meeting, has called on both parties to join forces and stand behind one common candidate.  Sources however claimed that, in the event Godall and Ferrer would be unable to reach a deal, Laporta could end up supporting the candicacy of economic vice-president Joan Boix in order to prevent a division of the board.

Meanwhile, more Catalan personalities have declared in the past week that they could take part in the elections for Barcelona president later this year.

Francesc Mañé , a former president of a Barcelona fans’ club, and Jaume Llaurado, a 65 year old businessman and a former vice president of the club, are among those who reportedly would officially announce their respective candidacies in the coming days. Mañé and Llaurado would be joining the ranks of other confirmed pre-candidates Sandro Rosell, Agustí Benedito, Jaume Guixà and Jaume Ferrer.

Another rumoured possible pre-candidate, former Barcelona player and coach, Carles “Charly” Rexach, is reportedly being backed by several Catalan personalities among them Jordi Roche, former president of the Catalan Football Federation, and former Barcelona pre-candidates Jordi Medina and Josep Maria Miguella, who, according to reports, would be forming a group of professionals to work on a project that would have Rexach as its “face”. It is however unclear whether this project would be part of, or independent from, the project being prepared by Jordi Medina under his “Un Crit Valent” group.

Barcelona chief executive Joan Oliver confirmed at a press conference last week that the Catalan club would now be in the thick of preparations for the upcoming 2010 election, but that the matter of its exact date has not yet been discussed. Spanish media, however, speculate that the election could held on the last week of April, or possibly brought forward, or called well ahead of the Catalan parliamentary elections scheduled in the middle of the year, as Barcelona president Joan Laporta, rumored to be harboring plans for a political career, would want it. The matter of the date could, however, be reportedly settled at the next meeting of the Board on Friday, 29 January.

Some pre-election candidates are finalizing their team and have started preparations for their respective campaign.

Pre-candidate Jaume Guixa yesterday announced that Emma Gamper, a 59-year artist and grand-daughter of Barcelona founder Joan (Hans) Gamper, will be joining the board of directors if he is elected. Last week, Guixa also confirmed that, Joan Segara, a 56- year technical architect and son of legendary Barcelona player and former captain of the squad that won five cups, Joan Segara, would also be part of his team.

Pre-candidate Sandro Rosell, on the other hand, has announced that he will be having a chat session on microblogging service Twitter on Wednesday, 20 January, during which fans and others interested can pose questions to the former sports vice president, the answers to which would later be published on his Twitter account. Gabriel Masfurroll, a former Barcelona vice president and chairman of Europe-based  USP Hospitals is said to be supporting Rosell and could get involved in the club’s foundation if Rosell is elected, although talk of his possible role is being disputed by certain quarters.

On the sporting side, Godall has repeated in an interview that he hopes Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain, whose contract expires at the end of the season, would remain at the club and that he will do all he can for Berigistain to continue.  Begiristain, on his part, would be reportedly assisting the board in finalizing a renewal offer to Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires at the end of the current season.  The offer supposedly would contain a clause granting the next Barcelona board the power to ratify or end the contract in the event collaboration does not work.

Meanwhile, various sources have claimed that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could be one of the possible transfer targets for the candidates,  following reports in the British media that the player could be put on the market.

Finally, developments on the election front have elicited intriguing comments from Catalan sports pundit Jordi Maluquer:

“If we take a look at the recent history of the club, it has not given very good results when a businessman has taken the reins of the club, be it a textile manufacturer, a real estate developer or a hotel owner. A businessman always wants to lead or to stick his nose in all areas.”
