Elections Weekly (26): Four days to the vote

The process of electing the next president of FC Barcelona has entered its final week with the four candidates – Jaume Ferrer, Sandro Rosell, Marc Ingla, and Agusti Benedito – expected to take part in a series of debates organised by the Catalan media.
The first presidential debate, which was covered live by the blog, took place on Tuesday, and will have its follow up event today, June 10, at 22:30, under the sponsorship of Catalan television channel 8tv.
The campaign period will wrap up on Saturday, June 11, followed by a day of reflection on June 12 during which no election related activities will be allowed, and will culminate in the holding of the final vote on Sunday, 13 June, at the Camp Nou grounds.
Rosell under fire
Recent opinion polls would indicate that former Bracelona sports vice-president Sandro Rosell remains the “favorite” candidate, although his numbers would have gone down significantly on account of controversies hounding his campaign, the latest of which linked him to a corruption case being investigated in Brazil.
Sources have claimed that one of Rosell’s companies is under investigation for alleged irregularities in the staging of a Brazil-Portugal friendly sometime in 2008.
More specifically, former Barcelona press officer Jordi Badia had written on his blog that the contract for the event, which was worth 9 million euro, was awarded to a company reportedly owned by Rosell, and that Brazilian public prosecutors have recently started proceedings against several government officials and Rosell’s company for possible fraud and violations of public bidding procedures.
Reports have it that, aside from the Brazilian company, two other firms that received payments under the contract were also owned by Rosell – one is based in the Cayman Islands, which reportedly owned the rights to the Brazil team, and a Barcelona company, Bonus Marketing, which held the rights to the Portugal team.
In defence, Rosell claims that his company is not part of the investigation and that he was only invited to give information on the deal. Nevertheless, he believes it is good to be talked about and appears unconcerned about the issue: “I expected some rumours or some little lies but it seems people have invested quite a bit of money in investigations. But I guess in the end it’s good people talk about you, for good or for bad.”
Fellow candidate Marc Ingla has countered that Rosell is being less than truthful: “We have a note from a Brazilian law firm that confirms that a company of Sandro Rosell is involved in a judicial investigation for possible fraud, so in this case Sandro Rosell has been and is lying.”
Plans to regulate club membership
Two candidates reportedly plans to restrict club membership and will put a stop to the unlimited growth of members.
Agusti Benedito wants to introduce the concept of “associates” and “barcelonistas”, explaining that instead of going for traditional club membership, fans and supporters would now have two other ways of being linked to the club but without the right to vote. Associates would refer to local fans who would be given tangible economic and other benefits, while barcelonistas would be reserved for foreign fans.
The camp of Sandro Rosell, on the hand, proposes that fans be given a period of time to become members and thereafter, only persons with certain qualifications will be accepted as members.
Jordi Cardoner, who will be Rosell’s director for the social area, explained that the policy of unlimited membership promoted by the current board is “not socially correct” and should be stopped: “What we will do is announce a period of three months during which everyone who isn’t yet a member can make the decision of becoming it. After that period, only two groups could become a member: family members in the first or second degree of a member, or children who would be given the chance to grow up with the club.”
The Boixois Nois factor
Rosell’s candidacy is also being linked to the radical Barcelona fan group, Boixois Nois, after reports circulated that he has been talking with some elements of the group.
Board candidate Jaume Ferrer has called out Rosell for consorting with a group that has been banned by Barcelona president Joan Laporta since the early years of his presidency: “You have to stand up to the hooligans and not make pictures with them, as some have been doing.”
Candidate Agusti Benedito also confirmed that he received reports about a particular Camp Nou incident: “They’ve told me that during the last league game at the Camp Nou, key members of the Boixos Nois were distributing propaganda for Sandro Rosell.”
Pre-candidate Alexis Plaza, who failed the signatures cut but hopes to run again in 2022, likewise revealed he was informed that Rosell had met some members of the Boixois Nois: “We have been informed by people from other groups that they all sat together to talk. This is not necesarily a bad thing as there are people that identify themselves as Boixos Nois but are against violence.”
Koeman could be named sports director
According to reports, Rosell could be considering former Barcelona player Ronald Koeman as replacement for current Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain and would have already sounded out the former manager of Dutch club AZ for this purpose.
Jaume Ferrer, on the other hand, said he would keep Begiristain, as well as Barcelona youth director Jose Ramon Alexanko and first team manager Pep Guardiola, claiming nothing would change much in the sports area under his presidency.
Barcelona youth director and former player Guillermo Amor meantime said he is supporting the candidacy of Rosell, while Barcelona midfied maestro Xavi Hernandez said he has a favorite candidate which he will not reveal and claims he would ask whoever wins to “leave Guardiola alone so he can do his job and that he assures the continuity of the current sports model.”
Guardiola’s plans
Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola may have publicly announced that he would sign for another season with the Catalan club, but Inter Milan reportedly think they have a chance to sign the coach as a replacement for Jose Mourinho if Rosell wins the presidency, believing that there is, supposedly, a lack of feeling between the Barcelona coach and the presidential candidate.
According to reports, Guardiola plans to talk with the new president after the June 13 elections to personally learn about his future plans for the sports area, and who would be chosen as sports director, among other things.
Quote of the week:
One who accurately represents the club, a team player, with experienced people, but also picking up fresh ideas from new board members and, finally, a very quiet president.
- Marc Ingla, on what kind of president he wants to be
Rosell has concrete plan to limit club members
Ingla: “I will be a very quiet president”
Interesting sidenote of the week:
Xavi has a favourite candidate in the elections

"Controversies surrounding his campaign amidst corruption charges ' being investigated for possible fraud and violations of public bidding procedures, funneling money offshore to the Cayman's and HE IS THE FAVORITE!! Wow !! Now let's see," INI MINI MINY MOE".
lol funny way of summing up
but yea some voters could end up with eeny meeny, who knows..
I don't like Rossel, for me he feels and act like a president right now, I also can't understand his strange connections in bussines and with Boixois Nois, I think that Laporta done good job banned them from Camp Nou, and now what? again we will have violence in our home? strange, very strange for me
I have one favourite candidate, but we will see how socios will vote:)
btw, in Poland we will soon have presidential voting too, but I know more about candidates and programmes, and even more excited about those elections in Barcelona
hi doris, who's your fav candidate?
we also just had elections where i'm from and it was nothing as suspenseful as this barca one..i say that cos rosell may be the favorite but nothing is certain until the votes are counted. happened back in '03.
I think nothing is certain until the voting end, I don't believe in polls etc. My fav right now is Ferrer, but anyone will be better than 'Sandrusco', and he (Ferrer) has funny song on his website:) It's hard to choose, but I hope that socios will do good job, maybe this year we will also have surprise that will give us to good moments in history,
For me the most important is to give autonomy to sport area, board should deal with financial issues, marketing etc but I hope that in sport area there will be like it is, especially that Pep will work.
funny, I've just read about Xavi oppinion and he said : "I would ask the new president only one thing: that he leaves Guardiola alone so he can do his job and that he assures the continuity of the current sports model." (more here http://barcaelections2010.blogspot.com/2010/06/xa...
So we have similar opinion:)
lol yes you do!
my concern is that with rosell's background, i've no doubt he will interfere with the coaching jobs..but i hope he would restrain himself if he is elected cos pep could leave if it gets too much to put up with. sigh.
such situation we had with Rijkaard, we all know how it ended, so I really cross my fingers for this ellections
ferrer is doing well in the debates
I agree, and in my opinion he is the one who believes in our current policy in Barca, I mean role of La Masia, Unicef campaign, "home-grown" players etc.,

i dont like rosell
he is a crook
thanks for the summary, xaviniesta!
rossel wins thats clear
in polls yes, but we will see on elections day, in 2003 everybody said such things about Bassat, I believe in socios and their wisdom
Laporta was an outsider in 2003. So I hope this is going to repeat itself. The guy is dodgy. Don't trust him one bit…
The whole connection with Boixois Nois is probably the worst thing for me- much worse than the whole Brazilian thing or even Laporta's claims about him wanting to sell Ronaldinho or sack Rijkaard… It would be VERY bad for the image of the club if those neanderthals came back to the stadium…
for a lot of folks too, fen. someone posted a picture on facebook whc showed him with the boixois nois, but it got pulled down..
Personally, I was thinking the same thing. But I also can't agree with his membership policy. Being from the USA, I haven't bothered getting membership yet. It's just too expensive for my situation right now, but once I'm out of college, I had intended to. If Rosell wins, I'll never be able to actually be a member. Personally, I think Ingla is the best candidate. Ferrer just seems like a stooge, even if he is the continuity candidate. Ingla seems like he would make positive changes without changing too much.
I don't see how Rosell can claim that "We are all Barca" or whatever his slogan says when he's actually against us all being Barcelonistas. "Socially unacceptable" my foot.
Oh yes, the membership policy- I actually forgot about that. When I read it- I couldn't believe my eyes… and to put that idea under the banner "We are all Barca" seems like a very sad joke…
like a freekick wall..two of them let their 'precious' without any cover :-p
Benedito is the man ! 1.benedito 2.ferrer 3.ingla 4.rosell
i think essentially he's got the anti-laporta votes. plus we cannot discount the fact rosell has had years of preparation, seems he successfully built deep valuable connections with that, esp among the older and entrenched aka influential, probably political, factions within the club, what i call the clubby types. he has the media on his side too as you said. all that form a formidable machinery the other candidates dont seem to have..
thanks for the explanation, lets just hope the no-clubby types dont buy into it all aswell.
I always find the suggestions for limiting the club membership a little, well, disturbing. But maybe that's because I'm one of those undesirable foreign-based members who they seem to want to limit.
i'm also one of the undesirable but can sort of see why they want catalans to have the majority say ,especially with regards to social things as they have little relevenace to me, but am annoyed that they didnt do the internet voting as i cant get to barca to vote but am moving there in a few months time!
Yea getting to Barca just to vote is rather troublesome. I don't know why they didn't do the internet voting either.
If Rossell wins I'd say they'd probably implement the membership policy early next year.
laporta wanted it for this election but he was out voted in the board deliberations. the veto is due mostly to: 1. no time to amend the bylaws, which i understand is needed, and 2. they couldn't yet find a sytem that would guarantee online voting thats 100% reliable and safe, so meaning essentially time was short, and maybe resources too. but the candidates are in favor of internet voting. maybe in future elections, we'll have that..
I think Catalans would keep the majority anyway, especially when the club goes through their next unsuccessful spell (which will happen sometime, as much as we don't want to admit it) and foreign interest and membership will decrease at that time. The other thing they can do, which will keep the elections with a Catalan flavour, is to prevent electonic voting. The perfect example is the two of us – we're able to vote but can't because of location logistics, essentially keeping the elections mostly locals only.
By the way, I'm in favour of electronic voting (I was just using that as an example)! I'd love to actually be able to vote without getting on a plane, that's why I became a member in the first place (so I could have my 'voice' as one might say).
Judging from some of the stuff on their official website I'd say they probably aren't very well set up to deal with allowing effective electronic voting.
There is something very vintage in old style voting however, but let's see if the new board pushes for the global branding aspect as much as Laporta did.
i was the same, getting hard to justify continued membership to the wife now!:)
Agreed my friend. I've always felt Barca's willingness to welcome foreigners wonderful. And now Rosell and even Benedito want to exclude us?
i had a favorite candidate but he decided not to run for the top post so am staying neutral for now, just trying to muddle thru the info thats coming out..
