Cruyff’s Corner: ‘Tainted’ jerseys? No thanks
The following is a translation of Johan Cruyff’s weekly article in El Periodico. The original can be found here.
Is it worth losing your individuality in exchange for gaining an amount of money that is worth less than 10% of the budget? I think not, because this uniqueness, together with all that it represents to this club, is priceless.
I am totally against putting advertisement on the shirt in exchange for money. And I would say exactly the same thing had it been another president or another board that had given the nod to this operation. Where some see incredible figures (30 million per year for the next five years), I see that this equates to no more than 6 or 7% of the budget. (Depending how you value the contract)
This club is unique in the world. Nobody has kept its shirt intact over its history and at the same time still be competitive as anyone else. Will you sell this uniqueness for 6 or 7 % of your budget? It is what Barca stands for and what differentiates it in this world; are there no other avenues that can be used to increase the club’s income? Have the new executive board thought this thing through? Do they think the previous board is so empty-headed [not to have thought about this]?
And here, does it not mean anything anymore that we are forced to [sell advertising rights] … through the fault of others… [just because] we have a newcomer who, now as it was seven years ago, said he inherited some accounts that are in the red. [And this after] the other one [Laporta] was able to grabble with a problem that neither Núñez nor Gaspart was able to tackle. Now is this move a masterstroke or plain stupidity? Can it be called a brilliant move when 99.9 % of clubs in this world are doing the same? Or are you an idiot for being the last one to do it? Are they so brilliant that they can think of this deal barely three months into their term, where as others did not in seven years? Have the others been asleep all that time?
Barca is able to get more money than anyone else by selling [the rights to advertise on] their jerseys because it is currently the best team in the world. But two things come to mind: To whom should that credit go to? And why only now do we take advantage of this and not before? In terms of overall numbers, just to give up that uniqueness, one that differentiates us from everyone else, it might be worth it if it could cover the entire or perhaps 80 % or 60 % of our annual budget but never in exchange for 6 or 7 %, as is the case now.
The way I see it, by doing this, we stand to lose more than we gain, and that we are taking a huge step backwards. It seems indecent, and how that indecency is so widespread; something that was already done by everyone else. Barca carries the flag of this city, of this country, in this world. And as such, they should have looked at other means of generating income similar in value as selling the shirt to the highest bidder. By selling the shirt, it just shows how they lack creativity.
And why five years? Or is it six, as I have read. My experience with long term contracts is that what today seems a lot may seem insignificant tomorrow. What will the club be forced to do then? How many matches will be first team be forced to play in a year [including friendly/exhibition games]? How many functions do they have to attend, with whom and where? Based on this, the total value of the deal, it will mean they’ll have to do one or the other.
Is it worth taking this step? I believe not, except when there are no other viable means. This Barca, as it is now, is exceptional. The work done with its youth divisions, its footballing philosophy, its club model, in short, is guaranteed to generate income, and it is the envy of everyone. All this is not achieved in a mere three months but is the result of the work done by a lot of people over many years, people with a sufficiently clear idea of what they want, of who they are and what their people want, and that the money, while still important, is not a guarantee of success. One only needs to study the budgets of some other clubs in Spain, Europe, around the world, to see that making more money does not always equal victories. Football is played with a ball, an idea, and with a style. That this same Barca is the best proof that they can do that, not just well but very well, without needing money from a shirt advertising deal.
Mistakes in the management of a club can be attributed to a lot of things, and everyone commits them. It is unlikely that no one has. Hence to take a step that others [who have failed] have taken is not sensible. And to do this in the year that you have just taken charge of the club just because you want to overturn a problem with the accounts from red to green, when earlier managements had not [even considered it]. That jersey is there for all [if they want to take advantage of].
How much does Barca pay for carrying the UNICEF logo on its shirt? Yes, Barca does pay, and it does not charge anything. One and a half million a year? If things are that bad, why not make a cut there. And with UNICEF out, so goes everything that it stands for and the good things which we intend to achieve when we join up with them. And all because you think that more instant cash means more successes. No, I’m sorry, we already had that success. And it is via a model, a style, and a way of transmitting it.
Dismiss this point, then it is just instant cash to prop up the economy. Brilliant. How had we not realised this before? We will be the last one to do so, the last to finally see it. Well, I’ll be an idealist or a romantic, but my mind takes me to always love sports and how to improve them. The current model is viable and can be further improved. I would not do away with it without first exhausting other more imaginative ways.

€165m for five years to me is an incredible deal and i have also heard whispers that coca cola and pepsico are battling each other to become the clubs official soft drinks supplier in a fifteen year deal worth €150m that will bring in even more to the coffers.
Also on rosells agenda is to renegotiate our contract with nike to ensure a better deal at present we are nikes number one paid club but only by a couple million euros rosell wants a much much better contract that will see us have an even bigger gap.
Lets give rosell a chance he knows truthfully the figures im sure himself it hurt to put a sponsor on the shirt but if he knows the situation he has inherited (financial) as president he has an obligation to correct it, visca barca i visca catalunya!
Every politician is the same, scare the crap out of the people and exaggerate and you'll be able to do anything. And they'll just nod their heads. I guess we are that deluded.
The thing that annoys me about him. He keeps badmouthing Laporta, and yes, he was no saint. But Rosell is clearly not any better. For one, grow the fuck up. End this silly vendetta and take care of the club! What are we in kindergarten?! The sad part is, I believe, the most ppl that voted for Rosell was just a vote anti Laporta. Which is scary.
I hate that he uses this scare tactic too. Omg we have a half a billion in debt. It's the end of us. But I'm betting next year, the debt will be reduced to some laughable figure, and he'll portray himself as a hero. Gotta love that. Because is there any other reason for as you say not showing the complete audit ?!
And as Cruyff says, the fact that they are doing this just months into his presidency is beyond scary. When did they have time to exhaust all other options? And on top of that make this deal? Doesn't it take months? So this was premeditated, it sure as hell doesn't seem as the last resort kind of thing.
And the way they keep contradicting themselves. Lets borrow 150 million since we can't pay our players salaries. But we still have over 50 million to spend on transfers and add more salaries to that. And we won't mention how much we spent before that. And his entire campaigning, didn't he on the on hand go on about that we are in a debt. But on the other hand he's gonna bring Torres/Cecs/whoever for 50 m. I wanna slap him.
I hate this deal. I hate the fact that he sold the one thing that shouldn't be sold. And I hate the fact that I know he didn't do it for the club. He did it to make him look good. To make him look better then Laporta. Because that's the important thing now, isn't it?

Lol at "shareholders". Are we on a Barca site? Barca doesn't have and never has had shareholders. The members of the club pay the club, not the opposite. Except for employees (players, staff etc.) you cannot (legally at least) make any money off the club in your own pockets.
The ignorance of some "Barca fans" here is mindboggling.
One of the first things Sandro Rosell and his board did after they were elected was to force Johan Cruyff to hand in his role as honorary president of FcBarcelona. I think it is unlikely that the present board would have appointed Pep Guardiola, who was relatively unexperienced to become coach of the first team. Without Guardiola, Rijkaard and Cruyff's support in the background it would have been unlikely that Barca would have given many young Barca players the chance to make it to the first team. Also the attacking, flowing football of Barcelona is trained at the Barca academy from a young age, this was hugely inspired by Cruyff, even players like Xavi mention this today. We should not make Cruyff bigger than he is but it is only fair to give him credit for Barcelona successes, their attractive football, the combination between success and charity, their popularity throughout the world. Not just him also other people, like Guardiola, Rijkaard, Rexach, Laporta and not to forget the players themselves. As a thank you Cruyff is treated like this, Laporta is portrayed as a corrupt man who was on the verge of destroying Barcelona and Rosell puts himself up as Barcelona's new saviour with all his talk about money. Although money is needed and a healthy, balanced economical approach is important for football club as Barcelona it is the joy, love and passion for football played in the most attractive, brave and beautiful way what made Barcelona so popular throughout the world. It should be befitting for the chairman and the board to see themselves as humble servants of this club, be thankful they can share in its success and give credit to the people who helped the club to become what it is today. Now they come with this sponsordeal as if it is such a big thing, but apart from the money which it brings I can't see anything in it which makes one's heart beat faster. The Unicef logo on the Barca shirts is still a fantastic idea. NOT TO TAKE BUT TO GIVE INSTEAD. Is it not said that the giving will receive!
Just let the Qatar Foundation keep their money and find other ways to make a name in the world and let Barcelona find other ways to bring in new money. If Sandro Rosell is smart with money as some people say, let him proof it by coming up with something better than this moneydeal with the Oil sheiks from Qatar. It would be great if Barca can continue to sponsor organisations like Unicef and proudly wear their logo on the Barca shirt. Would that not be an act of dignity and respect which fits well in the history of this great Catalan Footballclub?
things are changed since 2005. a lot.
I think it is too much. It is not healthy to the club that we have such a huge debt. Barca is still Barca with or without commercial in the Jersey.
I wonder if they thoroughly investigated what is the Qatar Foundation and which people are related to it, I read that there is one islamic cleric related to the Qatar Foundation who is quite controversial and has been saying rather extreme things in support of suicide attacks against Israelian civilians. The foundation probably does good work as well, but I wonder if really is investigated what their ideological background is.
