Busquets and Pedro, stars in the shadow

Busquets and Pedro, stars in the shadow

Madrid sports daily Marca presented an article discussing two players that have played important roles for the Spanish National Team in their quest to win the World Cup in South Africa, but whose contributions might not be as noticeable as those of players such as David Villa, Xavi Hernández, or Andrés Iniesta. According to Marca writer Javier Estepa, FC Barcelona players midfielder Sergio Busquets (21) and forward Pedro Rodríguez (22) are the ‘stars in the shadows.’ What follows is a translation of his article, which can be found here.

They are, without a doubt, the stars in the shadow. Busquets and Pedro are becoming two of the sensations of this World Cup of South Africa because of their outstanding performances. The first has been demonstrating it since the first game of the Spanish national team, and the second has had fewer minutes but also has made it clear that this World Cup final is not too big for him.

Sergio Busquets is one of the most utilized football players by Vicente del Bosque. The midfielder has started all of the games, and only in the first match against Switzerland was he substituted for Fernando Torres. He performs his job in silence and doesn’t stop helping in the middle of the field to recover balls and to thread the pass to Xavi so that he can begin to create.

He was outstanding in the semifinal against Germany, and, despite not being the center of attention in any of the games, the national team coach knows perfectly well that Busquets gives the team an equilibrium that very few can give. He debuted in April of 2009 with la Roja, and today he is an indisputable staring player. In the final against Holland he will be charged with disrupting the play of Sneijder, and no one has any doubt that he will do it well.

The second star in the shadows of this team that is asked to make history is Pedro. He was a surprise on Vicente del Bosque’s South Africa World Cup list, and the boy has not disappointed. He made his debut in the match against Portugal, substituting for David Villa in the final minutes. In the quarterfinal he had more minutes, and it was his foot that initiated the goal that ‘el Guaje’ scored. Pedro hit the post, and Villa caught the rebound to score on the second attempt.

His good form led to Del Bosque benching Fernando Torres against Germany to use Pedro as an alternative. He did not waste the opportunity of starting and was a constant danger on the right side.

Two years ago, when the Spanish national team conquered the Euro Cup, both players were unknown. Now, they can make history. Busquets and Pedro, Pedro and Busquets. Two silent volcanoes that are always ready to explode for Spain.

Congratulations to Pedro and Busquets. Both had shown amazing talent and skills and proven to earn a spot in the Spain starting eleven. I hope new talent from La Cantera appears for our Barca upcoming 2010-11 season.

    look at busi's legs.
    damn long

We've got so many fake fans who don't even appreciate Busquets as much as our eternal enemies. It speaks volumes.

These type of fans are just stupid and easily tricked. Rival fans always try to vilify Busquets and Dani Alves as a way to insult Barca. Some fake Barca fans follow along too because they're too afraid to disagree with popular opinion, even when it's false.

For the rest of the people who genuinely think Busquets sucks. What can I say, you really don't understand football beyond obvious physical ability & specific skills like speed, shooting, dribbling. Real football fans understand it's how you use those skills that matter. And Busquets uses those skills as well as anyone for his position.

thank you for that good sir. no doubt at times in the past, busi's theatrics and moments of loss of concentration have frustrated us as fans, but at 21, he's already a world-beating DM that most clubs would love to have in their side. and the best news is he's gonna be here for YEARS.

    • TLL says:

I find the "real football fans" sort of argument tedious and a bit cowardly.

That said, Busquets during the World Cup has been amazing. He's a much better player now than he was even 4 months ago. I expect great things from him this fall.

      • I agree. Busquets has done very well, and that's a lot, considering I find him to be only an average player (the only reason he seems to bad is that he's at Barca). Honestly, I don't really think he's that great of a player, but he's done better at the World Cup. I also agree that the "real fans" thing is getting old. So I don't think Busquets is a great player, I'm not a real fan and I know nothing about football? That's not even a logical argument when you consider there are billions of people in the world and even two people who have 30+ years coaching experience would view things differently.

  5. anyone think we should buy back xavi torres as back up for busquets. he'll be cheaper than all the names people are suggesting

  6. midlander says:

Bussie our strange 'water carrier'.,not the fastest, not the most technical, not the hardest tackler, not the most versatile…but certainly one of the best in keeping the ball rolling…with him tiki taka becomes easier…you may never win all ur critics over, but if you continue to grow.ur name will be stamped on the hearts of lovers of the beautiful game and a special brand called 'totalfootball'…praaaahh.

  7. Cristiano says:

CORRECTION: Pedro made his debut as a substitute in the first match against Swiss, NOT Portugal.

    • True, but you'll have to email the author with the correction. ;-) I did find it fascinating that a writer for 'Marca' was praising two of Barca's youth products — and rightly so. (SIGH) I'm sure it will be back to normal with 'Marca' in August.

Yeah I was shocked when I saw this article in Marca. Just btw Sid Lowe has a nice piece on Pedro. Dont know if you guys have it planned to post here yet.

          • Thanks for the link! I have really enjoyed Sid Lowe's articles. I'll see whether or not we might post it here. :-)

          • KAYR says:

sid low is a real madrid fan… he's on real madrid TV everytime doing Extra time and the match… what i love about him, he's not biased… he speaks truthfully….

          • Wow, I would not have known that from his writings, which tells you how good of a writer he is. :-) I love the personal touch he gives, as in this article.

          • odn-barca4life says:

Yeah sid is a great guy. Some of the Madrid fans dont like him because he praises Barca, but when Barca were getting beaten 4-1 he was the same unbiased way that he is now. I actually have an article from him back then. I like to read this article sometimes to get some perspective after barcelona draws or loses a game and people act as if its the end of the world and also when people say Pep isnt that good and he is just living off Rijkaards success

          • odn-barca4life says:

Ed Alvarez of ESPN is a real great guy as well. Also a born and bred madridista but again not really biased and he is one of the few people that takes the time to comment to the fans on his articles over on soccernet, and gave some insight to me as to what he was hearing some people from the barca camp say with respect to ibra.

          • Oooh, ouch! :-O Thanks for sharing. I had not read that before, and was not familiar with the team back then.

          • odn-barca4life says:

Yeah I remember listening to that game on radiobarca on the barca website and the poor commentator nick simmons could hardly describe the game prefering instead to talk about anything else because he is a huge barca fan. (when iniesta scored vs chelsea at stamford bridge the following year nick could hardly speak because he was so happy. LOL he was just making high pitched wheezing noises LOL and then started off on a round of "drobga you're not going to rome, lampard you're not going to rome etc LOL). It was an epic beatdown and like I say, I like to look at it every now and again especially when people say a season with a league title, a record number of points and just 4 loses is a failure.

  8. KAYR says:

Scappy, plz don't commenet!!! Even MADRIDISTAS are praising busquets!!! AT JOHN, i totally agree…

  9. Sanur says:

I Just hope tonight they hekp Spain to win the World Cup…Just imagine the positive effects it would have for the Brca players going into the new season.

  10. pudge says:

We DO NOT need any other back up for DM position. Busquets is developing into a world class player – he is only 21. Then we also have Keita who can play in this position – as can Marquez.

Cesc is the priority. With him we can rotate midield and forward positions. On another note – Caceres has played well in LB for Uraguay and we should take him back.

While I like Ibra it would gel the team better if he goes. He is too expensive!

  11. mike in africa says:

it's great to take a step back and just appreciate the talent of our barca boys on display. there have been ongoing arguments about whether these two guys are ready to be a starting player for barca; and what a privilege to have these arguments.

    p.s. im still disgusted by busi's theatrics…

  12. Natbarca9 says:

    congratulations to pedro and busquets!

  13. KAYR says:

    r u disgusted by dani's theatrics?? biased

    • mike in africa says:

yea dude… BIG TIME! disgusted by that too. the only reason i mentioned busi is because he's mentioned in this thread. howz that biased? dick…

    • mike in africa says:

are not disgusted by busi theatrics?? biased

  14. doris86pl says:

thanks for posting it:) I hope that Busi and Pedrito will have many chances to shine on the pitch! Go boys! I've got a feeling that tonight gonna be good night:) Furiaaaaaaaaa!

  15. Fenderek says:

Even madrid based Marca is praising Busquets. And deservedly so.

LOL at some of the "fans" who had thrown abuse at him over and over and over again… I wander why aren't they talking? Of course IF (touch wood) Busi makes a costly mistake tonight they'll be back, but… can anyone treat them seriously? The guys is… what, 21? Quite frankly I don't think we are going to miss Yaya that much…

  16. blaugrana_uk says:

yes i do like sid lowe i see him some times on real mierda tv i watch the extra time show when barca win just to see the reaction an honestly sid is very unbiased an tells it how it is, the most biased one an the one i cant stand is frederic hermel who is french an writes for l'equipe he has jealously written all over him an he is so arrogant in his attitude when i watched extra time before when he turned round and said perez will bring messi to mierda and even sid lowe an a few of the other guests laughed an said frederic i think your very deluded if you think messi will ever leave barca and even more deluded to think mierda would pay 250m euros plus tax to land him classic he looked so shocked that his fellow mierdadistas would disagree like that lol cant stand the guy.

  17. xaviniesta says:

so happy the boys are getting the recognition they deserve, pedrito esp. unlike busi who got pep's backing early on, pedro had to sacrifice a bit when he was starting out with the first team. i remember before when FR would sub him out (playing him only for a few mins) he'd look so sad, but he stuck it out and it paid off in the end so am kinda proud of him. thanks for the post, BFD. keep em coming.
