Catalan sports paper Sport reports that Barcelona might be interested in Ajax right back and Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel (22). The young defender is reportedly one of Barcelona’s prime targets for this summer, as the club are considering him as a back-up for Brazilian defender Daniel Alves (27). However, several other European top clubs are also interested in the young Dutchman’s services, including Premier League teams Arsenal and Manchester City.
Van der Wiel has a contract with Ajax until 2013, but it seems that Ajax officials would be ready to sell their young star for a fee of between 10-12 million euros. This amount of money would be out of Barcelona’s proposed expenditure for a back-up player. However, Catalan newspaper El Mundo Deportivo suggests that Barcelona would be ready to make a bid of between 5-6 million euros for the talented right back after the World Cup.
