Barça Atlètic to meet Sant Andreu in the final round

Two more games are left in the battle for promotion to the Second Division A. Barça Atlètic’s final opponent is a team they know well, not only a local rival but one they have already encountered twice this season in the league. The two Barcelona-based teams will face off beginning this Saturday in the Miniestadi. The following is a translation of FC Barcelona’s official report on the pairing. The original is here.

Sant Andreu, the last hurdle for promotion

Barça’s second team will play for promotion to the Second Division A , beginning with the first leg this weekend at the Miniestadi, with the return leg seven days later on the field of Sant Andreu.

The teams of coaches Natxo González and Luis Enrique will face off once again in this last elimination round for promotion. In the regular season, Barça Atlètic and Sant Andreu met in two games, which were much less decisive than the two games that will take place over the next two weeks.

Even precendents

In the Narcis Sala stadium, Luis Enrique’s team lost by 3 goals to 2 in a very even and balanced encounter. The best part of that game for the blaugrana were the two goals by the Nigerian Elvis, who was Barça Atlètic’s best individual performer on that day.

In the Miniestadi and with a bigger crowd than usual, Barça defeated Natxo González’s team by 2 goals to one, a very tight score that does not reflect the superiority of Luis Enrique’s lads in that match.

A Catalan team will rise

What is assured by this encounter is that a Catalan team will earn promotion to the Second Division A, it just remains to be seen whether it will be Barça Atlètic or Sant Andreu. Los andresenses had their first chance to go up in the first round against Ponferradina (division champions play-offs), but the rise was decided by the lottery of penalties. After losing at home (0-1), Natxo González’s men won away in Galicia (0-1), but in the shoot-out, Pontferradina emerged victorious after eighteen penalties.

In the second round, Sant Andreu had an easier time overcoming Universidad de Las Palmas. After winning 0-2 away, at home, the Barcelona-based side managed only a 2-2 tie, though at no time did their advancement to the final round appear threatened.

A very strong rival

Sant Andreu has spent the last three seasons under the guidance of their coach Natxo González, a technician who has equipped his team with a solidity and unquestionable consistency.
For Joan Barbarà, a member of the blaugrana‘s coaching staff, the consistency and reliability of los andresenses is of particular emphasis, one of the keys that make Sant Andreu a very solid team: “They are a serious and very solid group, we know them well, they don’t make life complicated for themselves when they defend [simple, solid defending] and when they have the ball in their opponent’s half they know how to combine well.”
Barbarà added that he would have preferred to face Alcorcón, since that could have led to the possibility of both Catalan teams being promoted: “It is a pity that both cannot be promoted at the same time [Barça Atlètic and Sant Andreu], to have both would have been excellent news for our soccer [in the region].”
As for football, Barbarà understands that the level of the two teams (Alcorcón and Sant Andreu) is similar: “At this point all the teams are very strong and there are few differences,” noted Luis Enrique’s assistant.
The schedule
The game between Barça Atlètic and Sant Andreu will be played on Sunday 13 June, and although there is no confirmed schedule yet, director Joan Oliver has pointed out in a press conference that the game could start at 6 pm (18:00).
Editor’s note: While it may have been the more enticing prospect to have Barça Atlètic face Alcorcon in the final round (Alcorcon will play its two legs against Ontinyent), as the saying goes, better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Hopefully the experience of playing Sant Andreu in two previous close encounters will prove an advantage in this final stage. If Barça Atlètic can replicate the form they showed in the Miniestadi against Real Jaen, Sant Andreu beware!

  2. FCBarca says:

  3. Magnus says:

    Tough match.

  4. EazyE says:

I hope they will promote! It will be a great experience for our youngsters to play in the 2nd division.

  5. Bojan21 says:

So will JDS play in this game? I thought he would play the second leg against Jaen since he got back from his national team but he didn't

    • Amanda says:

It's up to the coach but at the least he'll be available to play. I think Luis Enrique decided to rest him against Jaen because he had missed the training leading up to this match (which looked to be pretty intense), and probably also due to the mental fatigue he would have been experiencing.

  6. barcayute says:

guys off the tpic barta has signed to 2012, gunners want 70 million for cesc and van der wiel like the catalan football club barca showing interest in him

  7. HieiFCB says:

Lol, i hoped for another team..
but this is going to be a tough 2 match qualification.

    Come on Barca atletic!

  8. Anonymous_69 says:

Barca Atletic has to get a big a win as possible in the first leg, then play a more conservative match in the second. They really need their injured stars back!

    • Amanda says:

Luckily most of the injured players have recovered! Only Fontas is still out….

      • Anonymous_69 says:

        For how long?

        • Amanda says:

Looks like he'll be out through the beginning of August (he fractured his foot and had to be operated on in the beginning of May). So he'll definitely be missing these two games in the final round.

  9. xaviniesta says:

lets go boys! we can do thissssss!

ps i just realised they will play on election day. good we play first leg at home, there's gonna be a nice (hopefully huge) support crowd for the boys.

  10. How do you buy tickets to the game as a member of the club?

  11. japple011 says:

will we be able to watch this match online?

  12. Samwise says:

hope they play well, guess sant andreu are favourites having won the league, but if we can get our big guns out then hopefully we can produce a good result, at least at the miniestadi.
agree it would be amazing for our youth players to be playing regular football at just one division down from the first team.

  13. Anyone know if marc muniesa is ready to play?

    • Amanda says:

He's recovered and took part in full training all last week. I think he was still waiting on full medical clearance before the last game, but he should be available now.

  14. KipasBarca says:

Hey heard that Gai accepted an offer by Arsenal? Anyone heard any news? There better be some sort of buy out clause if this is true but knowing Wenger he would never agree to a buy out clause

  15. roja says:

we will sign cristian tello(former barca youth player, currently playing for espanyol) for reprecement of gai.
