GOALSCORERS:

FC Barcelona: Messi(42′), Messi(66′)

UD Almeria: Cisma(12′), Puyol(OG)(56′)

LINEUPS:

FC Barcelona:

Valdes, 6.0 – Made a couple of good saves and a one-on-one, but failed to organize the back four.

Alves, 6.0 – Was lucky not to get booked for diving in the second half. By no means his marauding self on the wing.

Puyol, 5.5 – The resilient captain was simply not his usual self against Almeria, conceding both goals as he lost the challenge on the first goal and put the ball past Valdes for the second goal.

Milito, 6.5 – Lost a lot of the fifty-fifty challenges and looked exposed quite often in the back four, but he was still the best defender on the night for Barca.

Maxwell, 6.5 – Was looking rather hapless in the final third of the pitch, but has to be given credit for his defending.

Xavi, 7.0 – His playmaking skill was hindered by the fact that for two-thirds of the game, he was assigned to come deep for the ball and not to look for the final exquisite pass. Other than that, he is still the main reason why FC Barcelona managed to retain 70% ball possession.

Toure, 6.0 – Played as a defensive midfielder, and covered his position well, but was lacking the extra punch in form of a cannon ball or two, or more incisive passes.

Iniesta, 6.5 – He is the perfect partner for Xavi in the midfield, but unfortunately spent a lot of time on the left wing, so his plays seemed a bit unnatural for him.

Pedro, 6.5 – Wasted a very clear-cut chance that he usually takes, in the first half, and with no space given by the Almeria players, his influence on the right wing was limited, which exposed his lack of creativity.

Ibrahimovic, 5.0 – His points are given only by assisting Messi for the first goal by receiving the foul. He was looking to regain his previous form, until he was sent off after a debatable decision from the referee.

Messi, 8.5 – Scored both goals, and was looking very hungry in front of the goal for the third decisive goal. Performed better as a playmaker, than while on the wing.

Substitutes

Busquets, 6.0 – Provided a lot of incisive passes after he came on, although it was too late.

Almeria:

Diego Alves, 7.0 – With strings of saves, including denying Messi for the hat-trick, he certainly hit top form.

Juanma Ortiz,
6.0 – A quiet performance from the fullback, without any major faults.

Chico,
7.5 – Frustrating Xavi in the first encounter, he did another good job today by marking Ibrahimovic, and managed to get the striker to unleash a form of frustration which earned him a sending off.

Hernan Pellerano,
7.0 – Exploited the fact that Barcelona plays with a lone striker up front, he and Chico marked Ibrahimovic side by side.

Cisma,
7.0- The match’s goal opener, did well in defense and in beating Puyol for the goal.

Hernan Bernardello,
6.5- Provided cover for the rest of Almeria defenders, especially when there was a lot of sporadic activity inside Almeria’s penalty box.

Modeste M’Bami, 7.0 – Provided bursts of energy and a constant thorn in the side for Barcelona.

Fernando Soriano, 5.5 – Captain for the spirited Almeria side, but his failure to convert Almeria’s first chance of the game will not work wonders for his confidence.

Guilherme, 7.5 – Very good and energetic performance from him, as he managed to physically keep Pedro out of the game for long stretches. Provided the cross which eventually led to Puyol’s own goal.

Pablo Piatti, 5.0 – Noted for his harsh reactions to the keeper and his mediocre performance, unable to exploit his side’s advantage.

Albert Crusat,
5.5 – Looking to add more goals to his tally, it just wasn’t his day today.

Substitutes

Henok Goitom,
6.5 – Gives a physical presence to the Almeria side and could have netted a winning goal.

  1. Douche says:

I think Puyol's rating should be lower.

Pep should see by now that Iniesta is not a left winger. And playing Messi behind Pedro (who was constantly stepping on Alves in the final third), what was that about?

    • Douche says:

Oh just to add, is there no ratings for Pep? i.e. team planning, substitutions (or lack thereof), getting himself sent off..etc.

    • Barca>Madrid says:

Pep also tried that in our last game I think.

  2. EazyE says:

Please play Bojan up front against Valencia…without Ibra, we are playing much better, you saw it yesterday

  3. Thomas says:

puyol was as bad as ibra. both didn't deserve even a 5.0. they can't be rated bad enough. iniesta is great in midfield and half good as a winger. pep made a lot of mistakes in 2009/2010 so far.

  4. Ibracadabra says:

agree with most of the ratings except that puyol gets a 4.5, milito gets 7, messi 9…..

  5. nono says:

that will happen.. ibra cant play against valencia becouse of the red card

  6. nono says:

i dont want to talk about the players.. lets face it barca played bad yesterday…. it all will be decidet on the bernabeu

  7. Thomas says:

i believe that a draw will not be enough in bernabeu clash. if barca continues that way, they need to win there. i don't see any chance for winning valencia next week. this barca can be ranked as 12th place. there are a lot of teams that can beat us at the moment. so lets see how the next game ends. this will be decisive for the rest of the season

  8. Faisal Rakun says:

@Deuche, Thomas: Barca is currently at a low, but this is due to a LOT of experimentation on the field's strategy, formation, and tactics. Pep are currently pushing his players for new position as he'll hope that it'll bring the much needed creativity and solution to teams playing 8 players on the penalty area. So far, the experimentation result are not yet pretty, but I think if Pep and Barca players learn something out of the last few weeks' experimentation, then I think it's worth it.

Sometimes if there's no more room to go up, what we do is dip a little, before soaring back up to the sky again.

  9. Marc4barca says:

i think everyone is forgetting the valencia game is in the camp nou, our away performances have been very poor but we step it up at the camp nou.

ratings are good but puyol and zlatan should get lower and messi at 9 since he gained a point for us.
a keeper doesn't have to organize his back four unless it's direct freekick or corner at his goal. commanding the back line is puyol's job during play. next week puyol will be a beast, we need abidal and keita back.

  10. Sascha says:

I really agree that we play better without ibra. we should really try bojan for next match or give henry a last chance. and i agree that pep made a lot of bad decisions beginng with buying chyggy for unbelievable 25 mio. think we need a real lion a real goal warrior, like villa

  11. Byronic says:

Sorry I could not disagree more with this statement…

"The resilient captain was simply not his usual self against Almeria, conceding both goals as he lost the challenge on the first goal and put the ball past Valdes for the second goal."

The first goal was not Puyol's fault, it was in fact Toure he stood around picking his nose while the Almeria forward ran past him, Puyol attempted to save the play with trying to head the ball.

    • Faisal Rakun says:

But it could be argued that the captain and the goalie should shout and remind players (like Yaya) that there are opposition players surging forward to the goal.

    • Negrolo says:

to answer you, BOTH puyol and toure missed to mark cisma. but it was puyol who GAVE away that corner.

  12. CommonSense says:

Good ratings overall. I think Milito deserves a better rating, he was superb. Puyol was at fault for both of the goals, so I would give him a 5. People forget Puyol's owngoal and his marking cost us. Puyol is a living legend, and he'll be back.
