The Review: UD Almerica – FC Barcelona 2-2
The lost passion. The weak personality. The confusion.
In a game that could not bear any mistakes, it was as if the forces of nature were acting against the Blaugranas.
Perfection is not an attribute of football clubs, says these forces, and now you are doomed to your fate because you dared reach perfection last season!
With all the courage the team had yesterday to play with an offensive mentality, even when they were down to 10 players, they were not able to reveal the Barca personality of last year.
The fast pace, the short passes, the unstoppable flow at the opponent’s goalie. The movement of last season is not there anymore.
Yesterday against Almeria, Barcelona knew it would be a tough game. The result of the first round game is enough to indicate that; it was a hard 1-0 win by the Blaugranas after a completely closed game.
The game yesterday was a closed game from the beginning as well. Almeria’s intentions were crystal clear: 10 players in the penalty area and 1 player in the midfield in case of a counter-attack. Almeria are to be credited for their efforts and for their prompt well-played counter-attacks.
After a series of chances from the Catalan club, Almeria got a corner kick that was enough to put Barcelona behind in the 12th minute.
Not only were Almeria’s intentions crystal clear, the referee Carlos Gomez also revealed how he wanted the game to proceed. Guardiola was sent off to the stands in the 28th minute.
On why was he sent off Guardiola said, “Ask the referee why.”
The goal scored by Messi in the 42nd minute proved once again why he is the best player in the world. It showed that strength is not the only thing there is in football. The genius idea and well played free kick down to the right bottom corner was superb. The defenders and the goal keeper were almost stunned by the shot. No one could have imagined it. A hypnotic shot held them motionless, waiting to concede a goal, and then applauding with all their respect. Messi, who is respected by all the clubs and their players, is the very same player that is most hated in his home country now a days, thanks to claims that he plays better with Barcelona than with Argentina.
Foul.
The second half looked promising even with Guardiola watching from the grandstands.
Foul.
Barcelona players tried to break through Almeria’s defenders down both flanks and from the middle. Foul.
The only hypothesis could be that the referee was enjoying whistle blowing fouls every now and then. No wonder he did not give any yellow cards, he was really enjoying the new whistle.
Alves looked like he was tired from the mid-week game with the Brazilian national team. A counter-attack well played by Almeria down the left flank cost Barcelona another goal in the 56th minute. An own goal by legendary captain Carles Puyol. And the forces of nature continued laughing.
The comedic-tragedy was to reach its peak after Ibra was sent off in the 60th minute. The curse of injuries proved to be meaningless while Barcelona were able to overcome it; they needed something stronger to stop them.
After the sending off of Ibra, the players woke up from their hibernation. They realized things were not going well. For 20 minutes Barcelona players could have scored more than 3 goals, but only one was really scored by Lionel Messi. It was as if Messi was sending a message to all those who doubt his skills - that he will always be Messi, the best player in the world.
Almeria’s defence was tight yesterday and they almost made Xavi and Iniesta helpless. It might be that the international teammates who played for Spain in mid-week might have been tired. Though this was not the case with Real Madrid.
The forces of nature not only opposed Barcelona, but also gave the Blancos a close-to-impossible win against Sevilla. The 2-0 lead by Sevilla was made a 3-2 win by Real Madrid in only 30 minutes. In Madrid’s case it is: the focus, the insistency, the strength.
Now Barcelona are second in the ranking table leaving first place to Real Madrid, who are ahead of them because of the greater number of games won.
The irony was that when Toure was substituted for Busquets it was as if the Blaugranas were now playing with 9 players and Almeria playing with 12 players…
Tougher days, tougher circumstances, tougher moments are yet to come.

I find we are always abit shite first game back from the international break.
That f***ing referee really was enjoying his new whistle…I have some questions for Pep though..
Why didn't he decided to play Chygrynskiy (who's as tall as Pique) instead of Milito… we need some tall players to mark the opponents during set pieces and we all know Chygy has great aerial abilities.
Why didn't he bring Bojan or Henry in to give the best effort to sneak a goal that we were looking for to replace Maxwell, who has been struggling throughout all the games as he always intends to pass back rather than making an attacking movement.
are u sure that u watch barca games cause sounds like ur taking about another team . Chiggy he got us out of spanish cup and milito way better maxwell been improving and having his game !!!
I think if Ibra gets his old haircut back he will start scoring again… when it was short he had 6 goals in 6 games… lol.. and if he takes off those ridiculous yellow shoes… he has bananas on his feet, thats why he's slipping up!
hahaha
There is a bright spot: there are still plenty of games left, including one against Madrid. I only hope we can win in the Bernabeu. Just a little over a month until that game.
@Barcaholic: 100% agreeing about maxwell
I don't agree with you Rasmi. Teams like Arsenal are happy because they know they have a great chance to win the Premier League title and they are still a few points behind the leaders. We are equal on points with Madrid and you start saying stuff like things are only going to get worse and Barcelona aren't playing well? Barcelona played well yesterday and the only reason they tied was because of luck. I still think that Barcelona will beat Real Madrid, win La Liga and experience another great season.
thank you!!!
We've lost it… what are the team doing? There's 90 minutes in a game, and it takes ten minutes to have a shot? Where's the urgency? The fast paced play? Madrid were doing it yesterday, and we couldn't…
Oh, and when we play better without Ibra, i think that tells us we should have bought villa in the summer. That really is a fact.
The game is so much quicker wihtout ibra!
Yeah with ibra we have more side to side passing rather than quick pace direct passing. We pass it to ibra he passes it to pique?? lol i mean come on!!!!!!!!
The thing that stops me from going crazy after every time Barcelona don't win: remind myself that in the end, it is just a sport, just a game. And if some people aren't capable of doing that, just remember; there is always next season!
lool, but like you said… some people aren't capable of doing that =/
In the end, were all dust, and in 50 years after i die, i will count myself lucky if someone remembers my name. But the life of barca will continue after I'm dead like the memories of Gamper do and the memories of Cruyff and Pep will. In the end, there are worse things you can do than live and die by Barcelona. But then again, even if you do, will it matter?
Thats assuming you didn't die from WW3 or a meteor hitting earth.
I honestly gave my opinion on Ibra a couple of months ago and got trashed by some users like (fcb_freak)on this blog, since then i prefered to keep it for myself, because some fans just dont want to see the reality of things… I wont talk about Ibra anymore because i think everybody right now got my point, and i'm ready to debate anyone who thinks that Ibra is a good choice for barca..
as for recent results, i still have faith in the team, cuz for me what they're lacking was motivation to win and prove they can do it again, which happened before in 06/07, and what better motivation do we need than real madrid to be on top of the league… this is the moment of truth for the team, to show how good they are once more, because tell u the truth, after the stuttgart game i felt that clubs that wouldnt dare to attack and play their game against us last season, are taking their chances this season.. they can feel this is not the same barca as last season.. but I'm sure that if our players play their game and in their best moment, no one can stop them..
Guardiola also needs to adjust some tactics.. as his mentor Cruyff always said " always play with the winning team " dont make too much changes, for example, no need for iniesta on the wing, or messi in the middle.. based on last years messi proved he's most dangerous when he comes from right wing & cuts inside, we saw also how he connected with dani alves on that flank..
These r difficult times for us as cules, but we should never give up, cuz we know what this team is capable of doing
Visca el Barca!!!
I can relate to you brother, on the first Ibra paragraph, exactly the same trashing I recieved.
Eto'o Was major and Underrated, I miss HIM in our beutiful team
Don't let anyone here stop you from giving your opinion on something.
Of course if you post something like "Sell ibra, buy Oleguer for CF!" or something then well you can't really expect much.
I would like to hear some more why Ibra is not a player for our Barca. Bare in mind you're going against the judgment of the likes of Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain who both had great playing careers at the highest possible level of the competition. They have also just won the unprecedented 6 trophies with the highest marks for the artistic impression. Fire it off.
Zlatan's story has really taken a turn for the worst, our preseason doubts have now been realized. Many people questioned the move before the season started; "Ibra is too slow, Ibra doesnt score enough goals, Ibrah is too lazy, Ibra is a hothead. etc." I had big hopes for Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Barca, I expected us to see more of the magic he performed in serie a, I hoped that his strength, passing, and technique would more than make up for his dynamic weaknesses. Because he has the potential to be spectacular, I've really had alot of patience and support for him, but my patience has run out. Zlatan does not fit at Barca and is wayy too expensive to just live with. Eto'o scored so many goals for us because he had the speed, timing, and clinical finishing to latch on to good passes and bury them; our most effective weapon. Villa does this for Spain and was the obvious choice to replace him. Ibrahimovic was a risky experiment from the beginning, and it turns out Pep and Txiki's experiment failed(again). At this point I would rather watch Pedro and Bojan than Henry and Ibrah, Henry is past it, and Ibrah is just as infuriating to watch, are we not paying them enough? He loses the ball every play that he doesn't pass it back to midfield and the timing of his runs are shit; he is called offside far too often. His finishing(the most important thing for a cf) is abysmal, apart from one or two, the relatively few goals he has scored have all been handed to him on a silver platter. His passing was impressive at the beginning of the season, but not this year, nothing about him has been impressive in the past few months. And his height, his supposed tactical advantage, is a waste because hes not even very good at heading or positioning, he just wants to do acrobatic volleys all the time. Zlatan should not be getting worse he should be getting better, his attitude about defending and his stupid classless cheap shot last game was really the icing on the cake for me. In 2004, Eto'o's first year and at only 22 years old his goal rate was .64, right now at the height of his career Ibra's stands at .51; thats not okay with the service he gets. We gave away a better goalscorer plus 45 million euro to get a worse goal scorer. Ibra will never be the best weapon for us, we should stop fucking around and buy David Villa so we have someone besides Messi who will consistently put the ball in the net. If we end this season trophyless it will be mainly because of 4 people; Ibra, Henry, Txiki, and Pep. Ibra has the next 3 months to prove himself, if they are anything like the last three, the guy has got to go. Thats called being objective.
Your wrong. If Eto'o was so great, surely he would be scoring goals for fun at Inter, where the league is inferior, and plays for the strongest club in Italy with great creativity and support, yet he has been a complete flop! Why do you think he's been so horrible? How many goals does he have? Assists? Why is he warming the bench? Legit questions. You have to understand, last season was last season, it may take a long time for a club to replicate what we have achieved. Secondly, unlike last season, this season, every team we come against, they start parking their bus in front of goal, making it very hard for any team, to score the goals we did last season. Ibra has helped us tremendously in this aspect, but Ibra alone can't do it, when likes of Henry is a shadow of himself. Pedro is great, but watch the games, Ibra and Messi gets manmarked sometimes by more than one or two. I guess you have to play the game, for you to understand. The other day against Almerica, Eto'o nor Brazilian Ronaldo would have done much. It's extremely hard, when 11 guys are inside their goalie box, defending. When Ibra got red carded, Almeria starting attacking more as they had one man advantage and were playing at home, but people are mistaking Ibra's sending off with Almeria's tactics. Iraq played against Spain in Confederation's Cup, all Iraq did was camp inside their goalie box, and what happened? Spain eventually won, but only by a margin of ONE goal with likes of VILLA, TORRES, XAVI, INIESTA, SILVA… Had Puyol not scored the owngoal, we would have won. The problem this season has been Henry's off form, there is no threat from the left wing. Pedro has been great, but Pedro has benefited from Ibra being man-marked by more than one defender, giving Pedro time and space. Villa, Ribery, Aguero would solve this problem, or Henry coming back to his last season form.
What does Eto'o's performance with inter have anything to do with the way he performed for Barca? His Barca stats speak for themselves, the fact that Eto'o is playing like shit for inter does nothing to disprove anything i said. Selling Eto'o was right, buying Ibra was wrong. Ibra has not helped us tremendously in bus parking situations, we still don't score, and he gets sent off leaving us with 10 men, which somehow helped. Its not that Almeria started attacking after Ibra was sent off they stayed pinned back. If anything it was less clogged up in there simply because there were fewer people, one less big dumb Swede. Can someone come up with a better reply?
I asked you a whole bunch of legit questions, and you hand selected one or two with your replies..?
"What does Eto'o performance with Inter have anything to do with way he performed for Barca?"
Last season, teams didn't play antifootball as much as this season, where they know they can't beat us, so they sit inside their own goalie box.
Here's another legit question for ya. Name me two games last season, where a team parked their bus inside their goalie box, and Eto'o either scored, assisted, or did anything worth mentioning..?
You said: "Eto'o scored so many goals for us because he had the speed, timing, and clinical finishing to latch on to good passes and bury them; our most effective weapon."
It was Chelski and Hiddink who started playing extremely defensive, I'm talking about 10 guys inside their goalie box. How well did Eto'o do against sides that parked their bus? How well did Eto'o play both home and away against Chelski? Did Etoo's pace help us out in any shape or form. Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I could vividly remember both of the games, where Eto'o was completely anonymous, LOST and his pace didn't do jack. My point being, Eto'o, Brazilian Ronaldo, Villa or Pele for that matter against a club who park their bus will find it extremely hard to breakthrough.
I could name you on more than 5 occasions, where Ibra broke through a parked bus and either helped us with a goal, assist or dragging of more than two defenders, giving his teammates time and space.
Something else for you to ponder about.. Ibra was one of the best players in Serie A and led a decent Inter side(compared to world class today) to Serie A glory and was the top scorer in all of Italy. Eto'o is struggling in Italy, where Ibra was king. Compared to Eto'o who's been horrendous at Inter, Ibra has been far more impressive than Eto'o with Barca. Ibra scored more goals, more assists, and has made a bigger difference. Why has Eto'o struggled with a better team, take that back, a much better team, take that back, a world class team where the defense, midfield and attack have been strengthened..?
Why did Spain with Villa, Torres, Silva, Llorente, Guiza, Xavi, Iniesta, Pique only manage one goal against a very weak Iraqi side in Confederations Cup?
Answer: Iraq had 10 guys inside their own goalie box, and so Spain struggled, but barely managed to win buy by one goal.
Do you honestly think you know more about football, and how things work out than likes of Guardiola, Txixi, Johan Cruyff, Koeman etc. Don't you think they looked into Ibra closely before signing him? They led go Eto'o, who's struggling from DAY 1 and hasn't scored a goal in more than 3 months. Ibra hasn't struggled since Day 1, and in some games, he even surpassed the world's greatest footballer in Messi.
You said, you had high hopes of Ibra succeeding with Barca. How well did Henry play in his first season compared to second season? Did you also want Henry to be sold after his first season? Was it worth buying Henry? Ibra is playing in a very different system, in probably the hardest system in world football, and based on his performances thus far, I'd say he has done a decent job. Of course, Ibra has to improve, but so does the rest of the team. The main problem we have this season is our left wing, and hopefully Guardiola could figure it out.
Cheers
JoeFCB your right about everything you said. It will not be easy for a person who almost spent 8 or so years in Italy to play at Barcelona. So far he has been really good. They indeed need a left wing. And probably Messi should play in his right wing position as always. Guardiola is planning for next year; it is elections year as well so all counts. These are players, individuals who feel and are affected with the environment around them; they are not machines. World cup, elections, Madrid’s pressures…etc.
There is a saying, great minds think alike..
After asking legit questions, Barca fan from Philly magically disappears?
JoeFCB, you are officially my favourite person on this forum. Thumbs up for calling everything the way it is. You are 100% spot on with what you said. But there will always be clowns like Shakawkaw who whine and b-i-t-c-h at anything and everything. They have absolutely no sense of reality.
And LOL @ some of these fools singing praises of Eto'o.
P.S : "b4rc4delphi4" , just cause you got OWNED, doesnt mean you just magically disappear. lol. I, for one, am eagerly waiting for your reply to JoeFCB's above post, cause im kinda having a bad day and your logic really cracks me up, so please do reply soon. =)
+1
I don't mind having a conversation with true Barca fan, like yourself.. There is nothing wrong with saying, a certain someone had a bad game, or a few bad games.. What bothers me, is when certain people, few people, the minority, who without any argument or justification, start calling names, like 'SHIT', and those people are not Barca fans, but rather posers. You brought up great questions Barca fan from Philadelphia, i presume, but I hope you see the whole picture. Koeman, Cruyff, Guardiola all agreed on purchasing Ibra, i'm sure they know more than you and I.
@ JoeFCB, 100% aggred with your statement. All those f*****g clowns who judges the player with couple of bad performance are nothing but a faggots. Ibra was a GREAT signing and I will always support him because he really has given us the new dimension in attack. We all are human and yes we do get frustrated sometimes and do something that others might not like. Also, drawing against Almeria does not rule us out of the title race. RM are having a good run and we all know they won against the so called weaker teams like Xerez, Tenerife etc during that run and it was only against Sevilla against whom they were able to escape winning on the dying minutes. So, it portrays that Real do struggle against good teams. I've said this before and I'm saying it again, RM will challenge us till the last day of the season and its only upto our team to do best and not let any points to be dropped from now on as its crucial at this stage. EL CLASICO win will definitely boost our confidence and am eagely anticipating April 11 for the big day when we can teach Madridistas that who's the best. And for last time, please please do not judge player for one or two bad performance esp. player like IBRA who is the essential figure in our team and the guy who smacked all the Madridistas @ Camp Nou with his stunning strike. I'm sure after that game, all these faggots would have said…Ohhhh he is the best buy of the season and etc….
Trust me, those people who are calling names are no Barca fans, but rather glory hunters. They've been brainwashed by the english media. Good for you, for seeing the reality. Barca will be back stronger. In Pep we trust!
Well Tom, some may see it as a misjudgement, and some wont… but for me, i can understand where they came from. If u put it on paper, Ibra is a world class player, and no one can underestimate him as he proved himself in Serie A, and one of the few highly valued players in football now. And u have to put in mind that u r replacing one of the best strikers in barca's history, besides ofcourse that u have madrid spending large sums of money on players like ronaldo, kaka & benzema. So i think they had more than one reason to sign Ibra, so u cant really blame them.
why I think he's not a player for barca?
well u should ask urself, why do u pay 70mil on a player that is known for his powerful strikes and doesnt take any real shots on goal!! A player who has great height but yet doesnt connect with most of the crosses!! A player who is known for his ability to pass defenders then score goals but still we're yet to see one!! A player with his phisique and body should be trashing defenders down, but its always him who loses balance and end up falling!!!
these r the questions that i ask myself every time i'm watching the game…
What I'm saying is at the end, it has to come from the player himself, his willingness & hunger to show what he can do, and do that in the right way which helps the team most.
Like I said before, I dont care about how many goals he scores, it's fair to say that he had a decent run in the beginning of the season, but u have to bare in mind he's playing alongside the best players in the world, and for a player of his value, its expected that he scores alot..
What I want to see from him is to connect more with his teammates on the field, talk to them, tell them what u really want to get ur job done. He always looks like he's lost, just hiding behind defenders, like he doesnt even want the ball.. he has to regain his confidence, which is also the responsibility of pep and his teammates.
One last thing, I think its pointless that some ppl compare what's happening with etoo to that with Ibra.. cuz in the end, if u ask all parties, it would have been better if each stayed with his team… think about it..

I don't see why everyone's complaining..? We are better than last year(Points counted). And yes, we struggle with our game and Real are playing the game of their lifes probably and we are side by side anyway.. just think what will happen when we find our rythm again. So chill out every1!!
actually we are about the same or maybe 2 points worse thanks to this draw
Nope.. 2 points better i think actually
Especially the bashings on Ibra. He is at the same place with Henry in his first season. And second, I think everybody doesn't know how hard it is to be a lone striker up front marked by two players and seeing his movement on the field it is clear that Pep instructs him to be inside the penalty area the whole time.
While the strategy is valid, Ibra's best partner in crime up front is Messi, and currently Pep is experimenting for Messi to be a playmaker. With Messi so far from goal, Ibra is left alone in the penalty area as the wingers are also instructed to make a cut inside with the ball, not without. So really this is all part of experimentation from Pep. But this is still very acceptable.
We also must remember that currently no other team in the world can win everything in one season, and with every other team playing 8 players in the penalty area, it certainly doesn't help either. So we just have to be patient and stick with the team.
Yep i agree
question.. why is madrid 1st on the table if we beat them once in La Liga already? We lost a championship a few years back when we had like 40+ goals ovre madrid but since we had tied 1 game and lost the second 1 Madrid was given then championship.. so shouldnt we be tied but still on 1st place?
Luimac it is who won more games. in the 06/07 season real madrid won more games than barcelona. same as the case now.
back then the statistics were:
Rank MatchesGoalsPoints
PWDLFADiff.
1Real Madrid CFSpain38237866402676
2FC BarcelonaSpain382210678334576
sorry for the outlook of the statistics. it was supposed to say that Madrid won 23 games while Barcelona won 22 games.
head to head in spain is different. it's between the two matches played, if it can't be decided from those two matches then it's the most wins then the most defeats then goal difference.
oh.. so we are second cause we havent played the 2nd match yet..? ok.. i thought the head to head advantage was going to be in play now
yea
I agree with your post Rasmi. We've lost the passion from last season in the last few games. The game just isn't there. We need a new attacker. Not in place of Ibra, just another one. We are thin at that place. Henry is probably done, Bojan isn't getting the desired minutes, Pedro plays way better when he is introduced in the game, not as a starter…Ibra, i just want to say that i'm dissapointed with him in recent matches
He doesn't even try
Messi dribles a lot more than he needs to, Iniesta and Alves try their hardest…It's just the game ins't there
But, as a comment above said, maybe the motivation is in sight. The first place of Madrid can be a big motivation. Let's hope so
Yep look at youtube at all of the games from last season, the diffrence in everything is vast,
we should have never bought ibra, yet alone We should have never Sold Eto'o, Biggest Mistake period!!!!
Dr. Gay, with his lame comments. Why is Eto'o warming the bench at Inter?
I duisagree with you Ramsi, i don't think you are objective. Seems like you have a thing against Busquets and no matter what happens on the pitch there will be one paragraph on how bad he is in any review, no matter what.
The truth is there was absolutely no difference between toure and Busquets in that game. Both were extremely avarage in this game. In fact, Toure was at fault with one of the goals. Neither of them saved us- and neither of them really made us lose those points. Well, neither or both of them, equally. I'm not saying he was good- he wasn't. But neither was Toure. So there was no much difference after the substitution.

Fenderek. I am not saying Toure or Busquets are better. If you check the game as Busquets was on the pitch, he almost cost Barcelona two goals. Busquets is good offensively, yet he loses the ball quickly at times that result in a dangerous counter-attack. He needs more experience. Instead of earning meaningless yellow cards because of unreasonable tackles, he should start tackling and committing meaningful fouls. Again I am not saying who is better, it is merely what was going on on the pitch. Busquets need more time and he needs to grow some muscles because falling down every now and then and waiting for the referee to give him a foul will not always work as he intends. Let's hope he learns from his mistakes and things will be fine probably.
In my opinion , second half one of the following plans should have been carried on : Plan A: maxwell should have been substituted by Bojan or Henry and messi drops to mid fiel as a play maker rather than a striker . and toure moves a bit further back. so it looks like alves puyol milito , infornt of them Yaya , infront of him messi xavi iniesta , in the front pedro and bojan or pedro and henry , i think that would have created more chances while maintaining a strong defense. Plan B : maxwel out bojan or henry in, then play 3 3 3 , alves buyol milito , xavi yaya iniesta , pedro bojan messi , this is my personal opinion, What do you guys think ? or name a different alternative would love to hear different ideas
Where has all the trust gone Barca fans …. This is not fantasy football , Welcome to reality . I wish Ibra does well in barca and he proves all his critics wrong …. really I hope he can prove that we are all humans and not machines .
A little trust goes a long way in helping the team to get back to their best . I certainly hope that Pep shields his team from all the negative energy coming from the true barca fans .
Let the season end , and we can then discuss as to who should get the boot and who should we get in the summer . But for nw at least support your players and be positive . This team cannot be changed now , so isn't it better if we just supported them with all our trust and hope we win some trophies in the end ….
In Pep I trust ….
Everyone should read JOEFCB'S comment. Great post. Don't be too quick to judge.
Keeping the discussion though, its ironic and atleast for a not-so-close fan to Barca actually directly humorous to watch this thread evolve. All the talk about him not performing exploding in a big "he cant do big matches!" when he had proved he did great in the league.
Some months later, here we are: Zlatan performs misserably, all the while he slams home the el classico as a sub and breaks his Cl-knockout duck first try.
Haha, maybe you should apply for a job at a circus as a CLOWN.
