Post-Match Review: Sevilla FC – FC Barcelona 2-3
It was a hilarious penultimate round. The 37th week of La Liga ended with 34 goals scored – all games being played at the same time. Eleven of these goals were divided between the two decisive games of Sevilla against Barcelona and Madrid against Bilbao.
The two teams have been chasing each other for weeks and until the last round of the season nothing is yet clear. Each ranking of the table is witnessing a competition! Five teams are fighting to stay in the first division, and four teams are fighting for a UEFA Champions League and two Europa League seats.
Most important of them all is the race for the title. After the marathonic games on Saturday night, the lead is still with Barcelona, one point ahead of its arch rival Real Madrid.
Barcelona’s game against Sevilla underwent dramatic changes of which the Blaugrana could have lost everything. In the end they still had the good luck of the last few games they played to keep their narrow win.
If the first half is to be described with words, these words would be: amazing, mesmerizing, superb, unbelievable, courageous, interesting, beautiful, dynamic, and enjoyable to watch!
The speed and fast rhythm with which Barcelona started the game shocked the Sevilla players. They heard about this team which plays superb football and keeps really high possession; they never believed that team was actually good until they played against them – Barcelona!
Bojan, the starter instead of Ibrahimovic, probably made it easy for Barcelona to play their usual style: short, fast passes along with dynamic movement – easily reaching the opponent’s goal. Messi had to wait only five minutes before he received a wonderful long ball from Maxwell, the excelling player, and as usual tricked the defense as he made the decision to shoot the ball before Palop could think of saving the chance.
The Catalans thought they where playing at the Camp Nou. It was a torrent of chances on Palop’s goal which never ceased to stop. Nobody expected the game to be one sided, yet the best team in the world proves itself to be so during the critical matches. More and more chances were created, mainly from the right flank, where Dani Alves was the key to all the crosses inside the penalty area. Barcelona’s movement was smooth and dynamic as it took the shape of a piece of music constructed by the players, conducted by Xavi – Sevilla were helpless!
The hard work and continuous flood of chances finally rewarded Barcelona with the second goal – a masterpiece. The deflected spontaneous ball was transformed into a fabulous directed pass from Xavi, through the defense, to Bojan who, with the entire defense around him, managed to score his 8th goal of the season.
The 19 year old proved that he was not given a fair chance during the season, and maybe he could have been a better choice in some of the games where Barcelona needed more dynamic and fast movement.
During the first half, all Sevilla could manage was a shot by Luis Fabiano on goal which was heroically saved by the outstanding goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
There in Madrid the first half ended with a tie of 1-1 against Bilbao. It was expected that the Los Blancos were going to unleash their powers as they did in the previous games, while probably many thought it will be an easy win for Barcelona in the Sanchez Pizjuan.
As predicted, Barcelona were the dominate team throughout most of the second half. As usual, they lacked the finish as Messi and Bojan failed to score from real chances on goal. Until the 68th minute the score could have been 6-0, yet only Pedro succeeded to score on the 62nd minute. Ironically the shot that Pedro took from outside the box was a ricocheted ball from a shot by Messi which was saved by Palop. Pedro as usual signed his name as one of the important scorers for Barcelona.
It was one substitution, however, which was the turning point for the rest of the game. Guardiola substituted Maxwell for Abidal, who was back from an injury and had not played for quite a while. Six minutes later, Barcelona found themselves with only a one goal lead, as Sevilla managed to score two crucial goals within two minutes.
Both goals were due to Barcelona’s mistakes; they only need to lose the ball in the midfield for a goal to be surely conceded. Sevilla’s second goal was because of a fast played free kick, which could have been stopped had Abidal been in his usual form. Things were almost out of control; players lost confidence and had to only keep the ball to pass the last 20 minutes of the game; and Sevilla were playing with only 10 men!
In Madrid on the other hand, it was an epic. Los Blancos managed to distract their opponent, who were playing with 10 men as well, and crushed them by 4 goals within 20 minutes. It felt for a second as though everything was in a blink of an eye turned upside down. The spectators knew it was going to be a tough 20 minutes to come for Barcelona.
However, unlike previous games during the last season where the Blaugrana lost the lead in the last minutes, they were able to hold on to the game and came out victorious. A victory which of course they deserved, finishing the game with a 65 percent ball possession, but silly mistakes always cost a lot and all that is considered at the end is the final score!
The final countdown starts now with Barcelona 90 minutes away from being La Liga champions for the second time in a row. A 90 minutes where a single mistake like those committed against Sevilla might cost them a lot – the league and the loss of everything!
The game will be against Real Valladolid and the key to winning it will be: full concentration, motivation, passion, creative play, and hard work!
