Post Match Review: FC Barcelona vs Malaga
The story could have gone either way.
Tense moments lived the Blaugrana fans when the Barcelona team conceded a goal 10 minutes before the game was over.
It was not a goal that put Barca behind, it was a bitter goal that made the score tied at 1-1. In the Camp Nou.
The first thing that occurred to my mind was the question of the week: “Is Sergio Busquets good enough?” Those who saw the match against Malaga would directly know the answer. Those who did not have the chance to, the answer would be: If we agree that Busquets is in fact a good midfielder, he for sure is not good enough yet.
Not only did he lose the ball in midfield and cost Barcelona a counter-attack, he also, just like in the game against Atletico Madrid, did not have the wit to commit a foul against Malaga players in the midfield. The question in turn would be: “Is Busquets fit to play as a defensive midfielder?”
There in the Canary Islands, Real Madrid had done their job winning a huge 5-1 win against Tenerife; not with style, but with the mere team-like appearance that the Chilean coach Manuel Pelligrini is trying to build. The rankings changed for a while, Madrid was on the top of the table one point ahead of Barcelona.
All the pressure was on Barca players.
After a wonderful goalless performance by Barcelona in the first half things were becoming more critical. However, a new tactical formation by Guardiola resulted in the complete dominance of the Catalan club. Malaga players on the other side were merely watching Barcelona players play to their liking, passing the ball and not losing it easily.
That Barcelona players did not shoot at the goal in the first half against a concrete defence made things easier on Malaga, despite the few chances by Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta – Messi trying to score himself; when things become self-centered the team performs little.
The bad news coming from the Canary Islands were opposed by good news from a player who’s from the Canary Islands! Pedro, in the 68th minute, in response to Guardiola’s orders for the team to shoot more often from outside the box lead to a powerful, unexpected, instantaneous goal as soon as he was playing as a Left Winger- a make shift from the Right Wing.
Not the first time the lucky Pedro scores in a critical well closed game. He had done it before against Almeria scoring another creative goal leaving Barcelona with a narrow 1-0 win.
The 80th minute reminded Guardiola, the team, and the fans that it is not who plays better wins, but he who scores more wins. And the score was revealing the unfairness of football after the equalizer from Valdo. He was almost walking towards Valdes taking his time to put the ball carefully into the net while, thanks to Busquets, the defense were not well positioned, miles away from the penalty area left Valdo wandering alone.
The shy cheers coming from the Camp Nou stands did not last more than three minutes. The winning goal was smoothly scored, as if Barcelona were scoring to have fun not worrying about the points, ranks or anything else!
A piece of art. Beethoven composing, Picasso drawing, Cervantes writing, FC Barcelona scoring!
A wonderful pass from the midfield master Xavi; an assist from the master of the right flank Alves; a shot from the master of world football Messi. Words cannot reach the beauty of the goal; the way it was played, and the mentality with which it was performed. 2-1.
The assist came from a player whose presence gave all the balance back to the Barcelona team. After he picked up an injury during the warm up in the game against Getafe and after missing 3 weeks, Alves was back yesterday to explode. He was almost fed up with the team’s performance and was in yesterday to help the offence down the right flank. His great effort between crosses, passes, tackles, were awarded by a critical assist in the 83rd minute. The ball came out of his foot calling for Messi’s foot; yes you will score.
The team did not win because of referees and they do not need that – for those who tried hard to prove a conspiracy. Instead Ibra was denied a legal goal.
However, the stereotype is sometimes stronger than reality. So every other player who throws himself in front of Ibrahimovic will for sure be given a foul. It depends on how gifted the opponent player is in acting, the referee’s decision could vary between a simple foul to a red card for the Swedish player!
Things seem promising. And from now on, the German team Stuttgart will better be prepared.

Does anyone know the reason why Busquets continues to get the start over Toure?
I bet every cule would like to know the answer to that.
Are you kidding me? After the performance Yaya put in at Stuttgart he doesn't deserve to start over Busquets.
Are you kidding me? After the performance Busquets put in at Malaga he doesn't deserve to start over Yaya
Because Yaya isn't playing in form this season.
Well isn't that interesting? The totalbarca contributors agree with my comments about Busquets but the "hoiler than thou" fans call be a bandwagoner, lol.
Contributor. One.
And OMG, you seem to be clutching at straws…
Well the straw packet had a hole in the bottom so I tried to grab at as many as I could as the ground was really muddy.
Crazy game to watch. It seemed like the ball would never go IN the net, yet they were dominating and playing the beautiful football that I fell in love with last spring. And the the equalizer . . . and then . . .POETRY!
And I love it!! This is fabulous writing!
All you needed was a Spanish composer to make the metaphor perfect.
Great stuff!!

Still hard to take, a day later, that Ibra's goal was disallowed…Such is the reality with the big Swede, it seems.
Pep will have to get his players to be a bit more precise and direct in front of goal if they are going to thwart these parked buses they continue to face…Match was far too close for comfort for stretches
Biscuit has no business starting over Yaya…None
Dani, welcome back son…Maxwell, you're earning your keep…Messi, sublime
Excellent review. I watched Franco Madrid vs Tenerife and the ease of which Madrid would get beneficial calls towards them. Soft freekicks given. Soft penalty given, after leading by 4 goals. Soft fouls given to Madrid for Christina to take. Afterward s, i was watching the Barca game, and you could see the difference in attitude and ignorance. Repeated dangerous fouls not punished. Repeated time wasting by the same idiot not punished. For crying out loud, a legit goal, where Ibra outreached two defenders and scored an excellent goal, while Weligton(that doucebag) falls like a deck of cards without Ibra touching him and it gets called against Ibra? We all know referees make mistakes, there is nothing wrong with that, but when you see a trend, when you witness repeated horrendous officiating against the same side, then it becomes sickening. Another shameful and disrespectful officiating, trying to undermine the same side that is trying to play good football. It's a shame really, I thought we were supposed to reward those that do good, try to play good, attacking, entertaining football versus sides that park their bus in front of goal. A very important and uplifting performance by the Blaugurana and may it continue. It could have been 4,5 goals to Barca, had some players passed the ball more often. Extraordinary game by Xavi!
How I hate talking about this point once again…
Busquets was one of the best performers in this match. Not the first time he doesnt get the appreciation he deserves. Not the first time people predict its the last game he plays as a starter because /insert a creative excuse/. Yet, He will play more games than people may think. For Barca and Spain.
I can see exactly why Pep is picking him. I predicted it before, supported it later, and I can safely say that its the future. Unless if the summer brings something different, or Yaya improves notebly in the comming months.
Thank you Ramzi, it seems like some people have decided they dislike Busquets and therefore ignore anything good that he does! How anybody could want Yaya to start over Sergio after the dismal performance he put in at Stuttgart is beyond me. Watching the match on La Sexta in Spain the commentators were talking about what a good job Busquets was doing clearing all the rebounds and loose ends that bounced out of Malaga's box where the 19 other players were.
You may not like it, but I recommend that you get used to it. He is the best we have at the moment for the position. I know what the respond will be. When Yaya shows THIS SEASON being better than Busquets in any game he plays, I will point it out, and Pep will have more selection headache. Now he doesnt. If you look to the selection curve since the beginning of the season its obvious that Pep gave the chance for both players at the begining of the season, then the better dictated himself as a starter. The one behind has to double his effort to gain back his position. Thats how it works in real football. Pep will only pick the winning horse, not the popular one. Pep knows exactly what he is doing here, and I am fully behind that.
The selection we started in this game is the best selection we currently have. Only Abidal and Keita were missed for making it the perfect selection (by taking Pedro and Maxwell positions). Again, based on players performance and form this season, not based on their names.
And Iniesta to the LW?
To start noticing what Busquets really does for the team, its important not to approach his performance trying to prove he is bad (Just because Yaya has to be seen as better, no matter what). Yes he lost possession once or twice. So as Iniesta, Messi, Pique, Puyol, and even Xavi. Most of them lost possession more than Busquets did (watch the game and count). He was a monster in midfield, and its strange that it went unnoticed.
A question to be asked: If Busquets was as bad as people think, game in game out this season, Is Pep that stupid to not notice what sound very obvious for fans of all ages and nationalities? Based in critic, even pinto can do better job in the midfield, right?
And please, dont start the "Pep is bias…Hater…etc…". that will be too childish to take as an argument. The coach select who brings him the best result. Period.
Ramzi- reading your posts or articles is pure pleasure. You bring a lot of logic and knowldge into the equasion, I can see when people are going to have a problem with that.
I can sign myself with both hands under your posts, agree with you 200%.
Busquets being the best option we have at DM shows how much we are lacking depth and form in the position.
Busquets is fine when he's not trying his stupid cute passes. The biggest problem is when we get caught on the break (which has been his fault a number of times) and he's too slow or badly positioned to either challenge or put pressure on the other team.
Sure he hardly lost possession (cept his free header to the other team's player that lead to their goal) but how much were they pressuring that far back when they had the ball?
Most of the time Xavi, Iniesta and Messi give the ball away is in the final third. Yes there is the odd occasion where they do give it away in the centre that leads to a break, but hardly with the frequency that Busquets.
He is easily found out against better teams and those who who apply high line pressure.
he may be good overall, but if you have a player who has consistently gifted opposing teams goals, he should not be in there.
Bullshit. He has not been "gifting" the other team goals. What do you think that people on this forum don't actually watch the matches so you can make up any stupid statement? Go back and watch the replay of the Malaga match where he supposedly gave up the goal; I did, and the goal wasn't due to any error by Busquets, it was just a good counter-attack against a defensive line that was playing all the way at midfield.
Ramzi, you are terribly wrong. Yaya is way better than Busquets. It's proven. You're just cantera biased like all the other guys in here. "JDS, Thiago is gold", "Thiago is the next thing" bla bla. Can Thiago be a Ronaldinho and go past 4 players and score? Can Thiago be a Ronaldo "ugly one" and score every time he has a strike? Can JDS be a Cesc Fabregas who is now dominating England? Answer remains to be seen but i think it's quite clear based on what i saw from these guys matches. Oh yeah, "muniesa", how can i forget? Just because he had a red card on his debut doesnt mean that he will be the next puyol and you do realize that right? And dont come and tell me something like this "If it wasnt for cantera we wouldnt have won the treble" because the golden generation of cantera is over. and dont say things like this as well "they're young, give them an opportunity" cos thats bull right there. Iniesta and Messi was a starter at what age? Pedro is the next thing and he is miles better than Henry unlike what Guardiola said which ended up in Quote Of The Day. Thiago doesnt show any promise to me. JDS wouldnt even make the starting eleven at Stoke City. Okay, that's exaggerating but i think u know what i mean. Let the war begin.
Cesc dominating England? Don't make me laugh- have you seen the games against Manchester and Chelsea? He DISAPPEARED! Completely. If there is anyone dominating england at the moment- it's Rooney.
And of course Thiago won't be another Ronaldinho nor Ronaldo- because he's not a striker, you moron. There was only one Ronaldinho, there was only one Ronaldo, there was only Cruyff, there was only one Stoiczkow, there will be only one Messi. If there is one player you could actually compare Thiago to- it's probably Deco. Of course to know that you'd actually have to know what is going on the field when watching a game. Do you? No, I think you simply have no clue.
One more thing- how the fuck do you know that the golden generation is over? You're a coach over there or Arsenal scout who didn't find anything? Or just some nemless guy with an opinion based on absolutely NOTHING, like million others on the internet?
Go support some other team that buys players and is not interested in their academy. In Madrid there seems to be one…
Fantastic review Rasmi. Keep going! (Y)
i agree with u douche a 100%. thats why yaya is way better, i don't kno why pep don't play him more.
I don't know if you guys noticed but I was so sad when I saw Ibracadabra raise his hand at various occasions because he wanted the ball.
The only passes he receives are the ones that are hard to receive. Messi has to work more like Zlatan cuz when them too are in good mood there is no way anyone could stop them.
Zlatan will never be the dominating type as he were in Inter and you can actually see that in the way he plays now days. It weird seeing him this humble. He just needs to score and his mood will show in the way he plays….
gtfo fanboy
STFU HATER! Adas, more like stupidas..
It's true what Zlatan fan said. Zlatan is not Zlatan anymore. He sucks now. Not being selfish and you hope to win Balon D oro? Very funny guy Zlatan is. Zlatan is better when he dribbles the ball more. Messi is selfish anyway, but he is forgiven because he is the fan favourite. "As you will see"
Ive really noticed that too…big Z isnt the same as he was in inter. you can tell in the way he celebrates his goals… at inter it was like he was a god celebrating his goals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDr71KzFy9c
arms outstretched as if he were saying "you are now watching a god…bow to me"
Now he is much more humble (which isnt a bad thing). At inter he was more often than not the best player on the pitch…now its messi then maybe iniesta xavi or ibra. also he doesnt have the freedom to dribble the ball as much. maybe it is due to the fact that most of the passes he receives are with his back to goal or on the left side of the goal area. ibra is not bad with his back to goal but he is at his best when he can take defenders on. im sure pep knows this but he must stress to the team that ibra needs the ball in more central areas where he can run at defenders and show his excellent ball skills. ive said this before…ibra was always one of my favorite players in the world before he can to barca and he still is. hae had a bad spell for about 9 matches…think what his goal total would be if he hadnt had such a long drought….
and busquets isnt as bad as everyone says he is….technically he doesnt play the "defensive" midfield role…he plays as a holding midfielder/pivot (like pep did in the glory days) theres definitely much more defensive responsibilities than the more forward playing midfielders in our system but being the midfield enforcer is not his job…hes there to get the ball out of defense, link up with attack, and attempt at winning the ball back before the opposing team attacks our defense. if you judge his performances based on this description of his position he does alot better than most of you guys here give him credit for.
sorry for such a long comment
I just don't understand, busquets is a bad defensive midfielder, at the very least, hes not good. he IS a fantastic midfielder but his unwillingness to foul and lack of tackling ability combined with a level of stupidity on several occasions which has gifted opposing teams unnecessary goals doesnt make me want to see him in the dm position. We have messi, we have xavi we have alves, ibra and iniesta, its really not terrible important that our DM too is the greatest of passers. it IS important that he is a good defensive midfielder and with Yaya we get a better tackler and someone who may not currently be passing as well as busquets, but someone who doesnt allow his giveaways to end so terribly. Additionally, i really don't know why everyone is citing the stuttgart game as a reason why Busquets is better. You could make great arguments for benching iniesta and marquez among others. Busquets had a horrible game until everything quited down in the second half at which point is it really a huge deal he played better?
By the way Ramzi, the comments saying 'why does busquets play if hes not better, are you calling Pep an idiot' seems equally as childish as calling Pep biased.
Personally, I am not a great fan of Busquets but I think the point is that he is making more of an effort to do what is asked of him. Whereas Yaya is playing as though he has nothing to prove. His unwillingness or laziness in making himself available to the player on the ball is probably what is putting him in Pep's bad books. Due to this Barça are not having an easy time moving the ball up the pitch when Yaya starts.
I think busquets just connects better with midfield and had better passing then toure, but he can also hustle and has a street style…but hes done good since hes got promoted,As fans we should just support the team no matter who plays.(even tough to be honest chiggy signing to me seem useless)maxwell-5 million-ibra-40million+eto'o -chiggy-25 million=70
instead-ibra-40million+eto'o-zhirkov-18 milliom=58 million
my point is this were the only improvements that were required…a LB and a world class striker and age from 26-29…and contunie to have faith in cantera,.
yaya>busquetts any day. what looks better?? xavi busquetts iniesta or xavi yaya iniesta. 3 cantera midfield sounds like gold
veloso scored ova the wkend lol n also d striker from stutgart
so you guys are saying busi deserves to start because of ONE bad match last week?lol
remember he just came back from injury and played 2 games in 4-5 days and he never had a good run of games to begin with and you expect him to give a world class performance.
i like busi but not as a DMF, he made and will still make costly mistakes.
you guys rather have a guy for the future who will cost us points or rather someone who is actually for PRESENT whom can help us win trophies
I'm in Africa and it's sickening to read some of the comments here against Yaya. The argument seem to be centered around Yaya vs Busquets. I have read a lot of comments about Yaya's poor game against Stuttgart. My question is who did not have a poor game against the Germans? To be honest I dont like comparing players but I have been forced to do so by reading comments against Yaya. Some of the fans seem to forget how Yaya helped barca in desperate times against Chelsea & Man u last year. I think some peple forget that defensive midfield role mean. That position is more about protecting the defence and linking the defence with midfield. Therefore it requires a strong defensive but yet a good passer of the ball. This is where my problem lies, how much does Busquet protect the defence? In other words, is he good enough defensively? My opinion is, Busquest is good passer of the ball and I beelive is a good offensive player but not good "defender" and this is where Toure has an edge over him. We already have enough good quality offensively. To choose Busquet over Yaya is beyond my understanding.
Yaya started the first 4 CL games this season. We won 1 drew 2 and lost 1. He was then benched for the next 2, we won the next 2. He started against Stutgart and we were bad. Draw from that what you will
Exactly, it's not made up, he's not shown good form this season.
The position, 'pivote' is traditionally very special and important for Barca. Pep was also a pivote and people used to say that he totally changed the position. he knows everything about it. yaya is one of the best defensive midfield players along with Mascherano, Essien etc but in Barca we want a good passer who can create chances in the postion. thats why pep rates busi and chygy.
Alves is fantastic player!!! without him Barca isn't 100% Barca!! instead of shootig, he pass beautifly the ball for Messi. Barca have to renew his contract!
