The Result: Xerez C.D. 0 – 2 FC Barcelona
After two crucial matches against Inter and Real Madrid, Pep decided to spare a number of key players, such as Iniesta, Messi, Ibra, Puyol and Abidal. In short, Pep probably had the best bench in the history of football.
The first few minutes started nervously, as Xerez made their intend clear from the beginning. This was not going to be a rout of the team which occupied last place before kick-off. Bojan started lively, as he almost managed to reach Keita deep in the penalty box, but Keita did not manage to connect to the pass.
As the clock went ticking down, it seemed that this was going to be one of those matches. FC Barcelona seemed reduced to a mere mid-table team as they lacked spark, creativity and ideas. It became clear within minutes from the kick-off that FC Barcelona was missing their usual defensive playmaker in Pique. The defensive trio of Chygrynskiy, Marquez and Toure was awful, with passes flying all over the pitch while they were caught out of position often. Bermejo was carried off the field, after an absolutely awful challenge from Marquez which knocked Bermejo out and left him bleeding from the head. Luckily Bermejo was able to continue the game afterwards.
The first half brought much joy to the hosts, but it was soon to end as the whistle had barely blown when the ball was behind Renan. Keita found Maxwell down the line, who crossed the ball directly to Henry who claimed the first goal of the match.
After the goal seemed to spark a fire within the team, who looked more lively than in first half. However, it amounted to nothing, which prompted Guardiola to change Pedro for Messi in the 55th minute. Ten minutes later, another crack was introduced as Pep substituted Bojan for Ibrahimovic.
The two cracks instantly made an impact, while looking threatening it did not change anything on the scoreboard. As the clock ticked down towards the last 10 minutes, it seemed like the match was far from over. Xerez was still fighting for points, and given FC Barcelona’s recent slip-ups against smaller teams, one could not hide the feeling of anxiety. Pep switched Henry for Iniesta, which inevitably brought more security to the passing-game.
Messi took matters in to his own hand, and rifled a shot from a tight angle minutes before time, but the ball ricocheted of the post. Moments after, Iniesta missed an absolute sitter after a wonderful pass from Ibrahimovic. Third time is the charm, as Messi skipped past a defender and passed a perfect through ball to Ibrahimovic who lobbed it beautifully over a hapless Renan.
FC Barcelona had finally killed off the match and any rumors of a rift between Messi and Ibrahimovic judging by their faces in the post-goal celebration.
The positives to gather from this game were few, but FC Barcelona showed their brilliance in glimpses but the contrast to the Inter game, was however stark. In the end, FC Barcelona secured three highly valuable points in a match that

Good win, important 3 points that puts a lot of pressure on Madrid… Pep is such an amazing rotator, he couldn't have made better decisions in the line up today and the subs. These games win titles. Visca Barca!
the pic is awesome.. their player seems to be crying. "why cant i get the ball from messi???"
LOL! yeah he does seem to be crying…
Messi in the Karate stance!
He may also be crying coz he's shorter than Messi..!
messi movement was amazing his pasing with alves were so good his assist was well if he had chance he coud score…
ibra pass to keita is why every body tell him ibracadabraaaa, his pass to iniesta ohhh he coud give another assist… in my opinion if ibra plays in all games he can score more than 40 goals this season…
in valencia villa has alot of freedom the teams plays againts valencia don't defence but in barca there are too pressure… also villa scores penalty too much
idon't think villa coud be as succes as ibra is now it's better i say he coud never be…
ibra and messi are kings
Sooo… Toure wanted to play so badly. What did he show yesterday? Nothing- he was absolutely awful.
Most of the team was awful, Henry scored- but he is not in form. Even Xavi yesterday seemed like beeing hangover or something. It was a terrible game to watch- maybe last 10 minuted were good. Seriously- this was nowhere near the acceptable level. Remember- apparently the style and attractive football means a lot to us. Show it. Bojan, Pedro, Toure- they should have done everything to show Pep they should play more regularly. They didn't. In fact-0 they proved their place is on the bench. Truly awful game that was.
You right. A lot of balls by Xavi without an adress. Bojan & Pedro can do great job, but on yesterday barca just played in disregard against Xerez.
Bojan, Pedro and Henry need some skillfull and visionary players next to them to be effective…a.k.a. Ibra and Messi. Once they are there.. they get more chances to score and then look good. Pedro has a very good finish,,, but he still needs the classy players around him (example Ibra backheel pass to set him up). I doubt they can do it on their own. And this was Xerez… the bottom most club!
The only good game I have seen Barca play without both Ibra and Messi up top was in copa del rey…Jeffren, pedro, bojan. But that was against Cultural Leonesa. I dont think we have enuf cutting edge for bigger liga teams with only bojan pedro and Henry up front. Atleast one of them have to be creative…like Iniesta against Inter.
against Inter we had Iniesta, Henry Pedro… which is still good…Iniesta rocked that game as well!

hey fenderek what a fucky minds y have…
stop your bullsheet comments
we shoud play againts depor then dinamo… why we shoud play attractive football???
if u want to see attractive football play PES2010:D
what a silly fans barca have….
I think you're an idiot. I have been watching Barca since 1992 and pretty much all the time what was important ALL this time- was beautiful football. That's one of the things that sets us apart from the rest.
If you wanna watch and enjoy labourous 1:0 wins go watch Chelsea or something, d**khead…
This year look that barca disparage in the other teams. They like sleeping on the field than came the 1-0, and sleep again. We saw what happened in the last two no in the camp nou, the only things that I like is that players get a chance, but the team sleep, even when the first 11 play.
(Athletic 1-1, Osasuna 1-1)
kinda agree with fenderek, we were pretty bad last night, still they always say a sign of a great team is to win when they play badly. credit to xerez they came out and had a go. wonder why we are so poor in the first half of matches at the moment?
And yes- it's extremely important to win the games even if the team plays terribly. Even last season, when we won treble- we had some really bad ones, but… we won or drew them… and in the end it all added up
MAY BE ADDING SOME BACK UP DURING THE JAN MONTH WOULD PROOVE GOOD IT ADDS NEW BLOOD AND COMPETITION
AND ONE MORE REASON FOR THIS TYPE OF PERFORMANCE IS FATIGUE …PLAYING IMP MATCHES AND INJURYS
ADDING BACK UP LIKE ALEJANDRO DOMNIQUEZ (FREE AGENT) OR DANNY MIGUEL WOULD PROOVE GOOD coz they r not high profile but hard working players who wants to proove sme thing adds experience for this type of difficult games … competitions also increases with chance for young players coz there age is more and typical LUDOVIC GIULY type of player who would take off sme pressure from youngsters and could be sold when bojan and pedro in 2yrs become completly dependable
I just miss hunger this season especially in this games against "bottom" teams. No agression and hunger brings no titles because talent and quality is here.
Visca el Barca!!!
When Iniestam, Messi and Ibra joined the team on the pitch- it looked much better.
I wonder if maybe sometimes much bigger games are on the back of their minds? At the same time- it was quite few of the bench players yesterday on the field and they should really tr harder to convince Pep that they should play more often. Did they? Hmmm…
I really hope it's not complacency, I really do. I am sure it will look much better against Deportivo.
chill out guys, like Cruff said we don't always have to play attractive football to win, the guys secured a win, peroid. i don't know how many of you will be pleased if we play good passing game and end up with a draw. Give some credit where it is due, i disagree with the chap who said yaya played badly, the pitch also played a role in our passing and by far yaya is much reliable with his tackles than Busquetts. lets not put undue pressure on the team, we have depor and a vital champions league fixture coming.plssssssssssssss
I agree with you on the not having to play attractive football all the time part. sometimes we just need to win somehow. fatigue and the conditions of the pitch played a big part.
BUT… my only gripe is the performance of the bench players who got a chance. Pedro and Bojan were fully rested having not played against Madrid. And they are ones who are trying to prove themselves to Pep. So against a lowly xerez side i expected better. especially from bojan.
People kept saying … " i hope bojan and Pedro get a chance to shine". They did… and i would have imagined that they would take this chance against the bottom team of the league to show what they can do without the big boys (Ibra, Messi and Iniesta… err…ok… tiny "big" boys… haha).
I was dissapointed in the lack of cutting edge. Even Henry who is struggling to impress should have proven to Pep that he can still do it. Oh well.. atleast he got a goal.. good predatory instinct. But the youngsters were dissapointing. I really expected a lot from them(they were fully rested). Maybe i shouldn't.
