Argentina and FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi (22) admits to L’Equipe TV that he would like to win the European Footballer of the Year or Ballon d’Or after finishing in the top three for the past two seasons.
Instrumental in the Blaugrana’s unprecedented Treble success, Messi was widely tipped to win the award.
In the interview, Messi was quoted by L’Equipe TV as saying, “I would like to win” but also adds, “I think that any Barca player would deserve the award this season.”
“Also I am well placed because two years ago I finished third, last year I was second so this year I hope to be first.”
The most recent recipient of the Ballon d’Or is Cristiano Ronaldo, formerly of Manchester United and now playing for Real Madrid.
Acknowledging the Catalan giants face tough competition for all three of the crowns they currently hold, Messi knows a repeat performance will certainly help his cause.
“We need to wait a bit,” he added.
“If we do not do what we did last season then we cannot be considered favourites. It is very difficult because everyone wants this trophy”, He also added that likely UEFA Champions League contenders include arch-rivals Real Madrid.
