Barcelona players represent half of L’Equipe’s 2009 Dream Team

Having just made history by capturing six titles in a calendar year, it would comes as no surprise that more recognition is given to the club when five players from Barcelona (Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Yaya Toure and Daniel Alves) are chosen by top-selling French sports newspaper L’Equipe as its ‘Dream Team of 2009’.

Messi, Xavi and Alves were also in the list last year, and the Brazilian right-back has in fact made it three years in a row now.

The paper also has a glowing review of Xavi Hernandez, which it says is the “most beautiful symbol of the success of Barcelona, a player who ‘breathes the game’ for his intelligence, quality and vision”.

Of note is the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, unlike most Dream Teams selected this year including that of FIFA/FIFPro.

The L’Equipe’s best eleven is selected by the sports paper’s journalists from around the world.

The L’Equipe 2009 Dream Team is:

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas (Spain, Real Madrid)

Defenders: Daniel Alves (Brazil, Barcelona), Nemanja Vidic (Serbia, Manchester United), John Terry (England, Chelsea) and Patrice Evra (France, Manchester United)

Midfielders: Xavi Hernandez (Spain, Barcelona), Michael Essien (Ghana, Chelsea) and Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast, Barcelona)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, Chelsea) and Andres Iniesta (Spain, Barcelona)

LOL tbh Iniesta is not good on LW.

Should have been our midfielders: Xavi Toure Iniesta <3

LW should be for Ronaldo, he is a great player but of course he's also a FAG.

  4. Mark Corbin says:

drogba??? there is eto zlatan torres rooney and they choose drogab HAHAHAHA lol what a joke

  5. ddd says:

apporved … no that christy atleast

  6. Blaugrana says:

Puyol or Piqué should be in the list. Iniesta should be MC and Ibra or Eto'o should be striker.

  7. BArca fan says:

Iniesta is NOT a LW, who comes up wit this stuff?? i'de rather have lahm at LB. and puyol instead of overatted vidic. Drogba??? I'de take samuel eto
    Cassilas
    Alvez puyol terry lahm
    Xavi essien iniesta
    Messi eto'o ronaldo.

  8. Nerre says:

Eto deserves to be in this team

  9. Christian says:

    Vidic out – Pique in
    Essien and Xavi switch positions
    Iniesta in left Midfield
Crynaldo in for Essien, on the RW

Thats the best possible team imo.
And why all the Drogba hate? He has been amazing this seasson

I just DONT understand why none X11 is with Ibra or Eto'o.
This one with Drogba as best CF, and FifPro chose Torres…
While Eto'o and Ibra were much greater. More acheived and perhaps more goals scored.

  11. Marc says:

Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Henry, Eto'o and Valdes in.

Honestly only Essien deserves to be there.

  12. KnivesOut says:

No Pique OR Puyol? This is a bit sad. Sorry Don't agree at all. Eto'o most definitely needs to be there ahead of the crybaby Drogba.

  13. OmarCule says:

Not a bad list, but surely after last season's heroics Puyol, Eto'o are a definite must and Ibra too had a great year compared to that of Drogba.

Puyol in, Terry out! How hard is it defending, when your whole team is camped inside the goalie box? Terry is getting to much credit, Puyol clearly had a better year. I"m dumbfounded as to why Puyol always gets left out? I dare overrated Terry to put on a performance Puyol put in CL final, Terry flopped in the one CL he played in, costing Chelski the competition.

Eto'o over Drogba. Drogba cost Chelski the CL with his horrendous mistakes against Barca! Eto'o had more goals, scored in the final, and achieved more so than Drogba.

Why is Eto'o, Puyol and Ibra omitted? Puyol happens to be one of the greatest defenders of our generation, performing for both club and country, and having won with both club and country, something both Terry and Vidic could only dream about.

    My Dream Team
    Casillas
    Alves – Pique – Puyol – Evra
    Yaya
    Xavi – Iniesta
    Messi – Eto'o – Ronaldo

its hard to sam since every team is playing their own formation…

  15. 0marX says:

Good list except I'd add Puyol and Eto'o.

    Casillas;
    Alves, Puyol, Vidic, Evra;
    Xavi, Toure, Essien;
    Messi, Eto'o, Iniesta.

  16. Amar says:

puyol should be there. he is good AND CLEAN!!! not like terry n vidic who like doing "professional fouls".

  17. Misael says:

Where the heck is Cristiano Ronaldo???? he is the best player in the world and hes not here??? and Bastian Schweinsteiger and xabi alonso??? instead of toure, essien, and drogba!!!
