Arshavin: “If you love football, you’ll love Barca”
Andrei Arshavin feels an authentic devotion to FC Barcelona, according to Catalan paper Sport. The Arsenal striker became enamoured with Barcelona watching Koeman, Stoichkov, Romario and company play when he was a child. And that ‘crush’ remains even until today.
As a good culé, the 28 years old Russian striker remembers one of the brightest days in the Catalan club’s history; 20th May 1992, the day the team won for their first European Cup by beating Sampdoria (1-0) in the final at the Wembley Stadium in London.
“Koeman scored that goal,” recalls Arshavin in an interview with British newspaper Daily Telegraph. “I like Barcelona because no matter who the coach is or what players it has, they always practice attacking football. Always,” he explains.
It is this philosophy that attracted him since he was very small, in his native Russia. He sympathised with Barcelona, win or lose; “For two or three years, Barcelona did not have a good time, losing 2-6 or 7-4. I liked that! They were always attacking! Probably not for the results … but the football is fantastic. If you are a person who love (good) football, you’ll love Barca,” he adds.
Arshavin, back then, quivers seeing Barcelona stars in action; “I had no idols, I will not kneel before anyone but I adore Romario, Ronaldo and Stoichkov; football players who played for Barcelona and players who could decide a game alone. They would simply pick up the ball and ran, like Ronaldo. I try to do that. This is what the coaches like from me.”
Naturally, Arshavin also enjoys watching the current Barcelona team under Pep Guardiola; “Barcelona demonstrates that you can play beautiful football and still obtain results. Of course, I support Barcelona in the Champions League final against Manchester United,” he revealed.
Asked if he would dream of playing for Barcelona, he said, “It’s difficult. I’ve been here at Arsenal for nine months now and I have not done anything yet for Arsenal. The football here is perfect. It’s the best.”
Arshavin acknowledges that he feels very comfortable working under Arsène Wenger’s, and feels in tune with their offensive football, something he says, is unusual in the Premier League. He admits that the British way of life is difficult for him, where there are many norms that he does not understand. “In Russia, you can bend the rules,” he said. And he cites the case of visas. Arshavin is disappointed that in England they are only extended for three months, while in his country they are usually for one year.
And he complains about the taxes. In his view, the great stars of the Premiership will ‘migrate’ sooner or later to the Spanish League, for while in England they have to pay a 50% tax, in Spain it is only 27%. Will it also be his case in the future?

this just reminds me when zenit asked for 20mil and messi for arshavin then sold him to arsenal for 17mil i think or it was more than that.
Transfers are always more expensive for Barca than other clubs.
He would have been a good addition for our squad.
He can replace Henry right?
he could but the chances are very low 1. because he just recently joined arsenal 2. barcelona are closely linked with robinho and saurez and one will definitely come.
By the way, this Russian striker remembers one of the brightest days in the Catalan club’s history; 20th May 1992, the day the team won for their first European Cup by beating Sampdoria (1-0) in the final at the Wembley Stadium in London. I am an avid fan of this sports…
Its a shame…
If the negotiation went good, we would have him…
Teams always act so gay against us, Deportivo, Valencia…. pfff
Excellent player shame we didnt get him but thats life and he will be one of my fav players outside Barca
he coud certainly be better than caceres+keita……
we shoudn't forget he loved barca!!!!
we bought keita 16m we coud buy arsha 20m!!!!! i have never seen any spacial in him.i can't understand how he can play in this team!!!! he had good luck cuz iniesta or henry is injuried this year
i hope barca buy cesc….
Dude,Keita was a must for us since we had sold Deco etc and our midfield had just Xavi and Iniesta (Gudjohnson wasn't Barca material)
Every team needs players like him who will be content to sit on the bench for most of the season, while being good enough to replace the starters if needed.
[...] and another was brought up in La Masía (Cesc Fábregas) (not to mention that another one keeps declaring his love for Barça whenever there’s a journalist present… yes, Arshavin, I’m looking at [...]
Arsenal is just this team that are claiming to play the beutiful game as barca does, they are wanabees and quite frankly dont come near to our level, mind you they do play good, but i've heard remarks that they play more fluid than us, which is just shocking.
it is shocking since they haven't won anything for the past 5 years and we beat them in the paris cl final and also cause we scored 150+ goals last season.
Damn we should had jumped on him when we had the chance… Maybe we can offer Arsenal a bit of change and they'll take it if we leave Fàbregas alone…
No way!!! I definitely prefer Fabregas over Arshavin
