Abidal: “The first objective is La Liga”
FC Barcelona left-back Eric Abidal has the honour of closing the final press conference of the year at the club today.
The session opened for the player with a question about which of the six cups that is more important to him, and his answer was: “I’ll take the victory in Abu Dhabi because it was the cup that was lacking for the club, and it was also the first time I saw the boss wept with joy. Everything was perfect.”
Asked if the team is able to replicate their successes, the Frenchman said, “We do not know yet if it is possible to repeat (the year), but it sure is going to be very difficult. We can continue to work with the attitude that we have in the trainings, and work the way we always do. We can always try but the road is still very long, and we know it is never easy to win a title. If in the end we are able to do it that would be perfect.”
“The first objective is the League. Then, we’ll see what we can do in the Champions League, which is a goal for us every year.”
Queried about any messages from the club president, Joan Laporta, Abidal said, “He has come to wish us a happy New Year. He also told us that we need to continue to work hard and that everything about this year is perfect, but he reminds us that the most important thing now is what lies ahead. That we have a big bunch of talented players and that if we work a lot harder, we can achieve much more better things. These are the words of a president who is happy with the group and the club.”
Finally asked about the Villarreal match this Saturday, the player admitted, “This match is a very important match because it is the first of 2010, at home, and Villarreal is a good team and they will certainly come here to get a good result. But we had time to prepare, and still have a few days to make everything perfect and we must not fail.”
“We are half way through the season and the most important thing is to begin 2010 in the best possible way.”
