The contenders for this year’s FIFA World Player of the Year awards, which will be presented at the Kongresshaus in Zurich, FIFA’s home city, on 21 December 2009, were announced today.

The males nominees are:

Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona)

Xavi Hernandez (Spain, Barcelona)

Andrés Iniesta (Spain, Barcelona)

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Real Madrid)

Kaká (Brazil, Real Madrid)

The 2008 FIFA World Player is Cristiano Ronaldo, with Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres, coming second and third respectively.

At the same press release, the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year nominees was also announced.

These nominees were confirmed after a poll in which the coaches and captains of men’s and women’s national teams from around the world voted for candidates from a list drawn up by football experts from the FIFA Football Committee and the FIFA Committee for Women’s Football.

The FIFA World Player Gala 2009 will have a number of exciting new features, including two new awards:

• The FIFA/FIFPro World XI, which will honour the best 11 players of the year as chosen by over 50,000 professional football players from all over the world.

• The FIFA Puskás Award, created in honour and in memory of Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s, will be presented to the player – man or woman – who has scored the ‘most beautiful goal’ during the past year.

3 homegrown players. IMO the 3 best without no doubts..
Do they get a second and third prize or is it just he who win's who gets ?

  2. mario ch says:

how many awards are there in the world of football !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have absolutely no plan

  3. Kaka should not be on the list. He was injured all the time and his team had no success last year. I would rather put Dzeko :P , not that I like him or anything.

  4. Iniesta_8 says:

when you see how so called Barça fans vote for UEFA team ot the year…. :-s

They all voted for Kaka and ronaldo in that team :-s

  5. JBarca says:

We should buy Dzeko! Try to make him play like Henry. He would give us so much improvement in heading and has great technique too.

  8. Tarra says:

To choose between Messi and Xavi–that's something hard, I must admit. This year is Messi's year.. that's for sure. But Xavi is the actor behind all the great things we've had too. Man, it's hard.

  9. Hallu says:

  10. David says:

Why the fuck is Kaka there ahead of Eto'o, Zlatan, Torres, Forlan, Gerard etc

  11. FCB_fR3aK says:

Hmm , pretty sure Messi will win it , Although i really hope Xavi finishes 2nd ahead of Ronaldo. Iniesta will get 4th ahead of Kaka who doesnt deserve to be there based on his club performance. But we have to keep in mind , he had an amazing Confederations Cup with Brazil and a very good CONMEBOL qualifying campaign. But he dint deserve to be on the Ballon D'or top 10 candidates thats for sure !

  12. Johan says:

Why the hell is that clown called Kaka is in there? He didnt do anything last year besides sleeping with pigs in a haystack!

  13. Nbr says:

    1st-Messi, 2nd-Xavi, 3rd-Iniesta/C.Ronaldo(almost C.Ronaldo)

  14. Varun says:

    one two three barca baby.

    About this whole Kaka situation.
Its because its a Fifa award and Fifa takes competition priority in the order of
    International >Continental>club and so on
and Brazil won confed cup and kaka was player of the tournament.

  15. Bojantee says:

Kaka deserved to be there.he just had a missed last season. The out come would be.
    Messi,xavi,iniesta,christi and kaka.
